Book excerpt: This thesis presents an exploration of the photophysics of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals using both linear and non-linear optical measurement techniques. These optical methodologies are used to follow population dynamics in both singly and multiply excited nanocrystal systems as well as determine material properties of the ensemble. Topics covered in the thesis include, the identification and characterization of bulk-like nanocrystals, study of the fine structure states of the lowest energy exciton, single and multiexciton population dynamics, acoustic phonon modes, elasticity and surface stress properties of a colloidal ensemble in solution. Through linear spectroscopy, the properties of both quantum confined and bulk-like colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are compared. The identification of a model system of bulk-like nanocrystals with a non-standard absorption profile serves to resolve an ambiguity in literature concerning their characterization. The remainder of the thesis is focused on the size-dependent properties of quantum confined CdSe colloidal nanocrystals. The population dynamics and material properties of these systems are studied using a nonlinear optical technique called transient grating. A third order transient grating measurement with a cross-polarized configuration, which follows the relaxation within the fine structure levels of the lowest energy exciton state, is demonstrated and used to compare systems with different crystal field splittings. Transient grating experiments performed with specific polarization sequences allow for selective observation of the dynamics amongst nearly degenerate levels at room temperature. Cross-polarized transient grating is also used to observe a quantized acoustic phonon mode in a series of nanocrystal samples. The observation of this mode allows experimental determination of the elasticity and surface stress of the nanocrystal ensemble in solution. The anisotropic origin of the acoustic phonon is discussed using a combination of theoretical analysis, modelling and experimental data. In addition, third- and fifth-order transient grating experiments are used to study exciton and multiexciton population relaxation dynamics. The work presented here spans the optical and material properties of quantum confined and 'bulk' nanocrystals. This thesis attempts to illustrate the broad scope of the observed behaviour of colloidal nanocrystal systems and to contribute to a greater understanding of their physical properties.

Book excerpt: The following work introduces a novel approach for shape and size control of semiconductor nanocrystals within colloidal solution by thermodynamically-driven aggregative growth. The presented technique is based on the employment of coordinating ligands that reduce surface energy, resulting in crystal melting. Compared to traditional growth approaches with precursors, here, nanoparticles act as building blocks offering more predictive control over the course of coalescence. We demonstrate that an innovative approach to thermodynamically-driven aggregative growth of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals yields unique and diverse geometries (cubes, spheres, nanorods, nanorings) with narrow size dispersion by the use of X-, L-, and Z-type coordinating solvent, making it a valuable technique for the development of new optoelectronic materials. We also investigated the effect of external electric field on products of thermodynamically-driven aggregative growth. It was shown that solution-proceeded semiconductor nanocrystals undergo photoinduced rotation driven by excited-state dipole moment and counterbalanced by the viscosity of a solvent. Compared to solid assemblies, where dipoles are randomly positioned, solution-proceeded nanocrystals align along electric field and cause prominent optical changes due to quantum confined Stark effect. We demonstrate that organized alignment can be preserved by slow crystallization from a solid environment. This unique approach could aid the development of new electro-optical and voltage-sensitive devices for exotic applications.

Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Book excerpt: Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals have emerged as fascinating new materials and gained interest in the last 30 years because of their size, shape, and compositionally tunable electronic and optical properties as well as their potential to serve as artificial atoms. Challenges and opportunities have arisen when assembling nanocrystals into nanocrystal solids for electronic and optoelectronic applications, largely because of the significant influence of nanocrystal surface chemistry on the electronic, optical, and structural properties of nanocrystal solids. In order to assemble nanocrystal solids for high performance devices, we must understand and be able to control the effects of nanocrystal surface organic capping ligands, non-stoichiometry, and impurity doping on the electronic and optoelectronic properties of the nanocrystal solids.

Book excerpt: Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are emerging materials for next-generation optoelectronic devices including solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Colloidal quantum dots have been developed in the past decades to make solar cells and LEDs with decent efficiencies. However, their performances are limited by low conductivity. To address this problem, two-dimensional nanosheets (also known as nanoplatelets, quantum-belts or nanoribbons) have been developed recently. They have a much higher conductivity than quantum-dot films and tunable optical properties. The new method is developed for the synthesis of colloidal PbS nanosheets with a 100% success rate. We confirmed that residual acetate in the reaction mixture influence for the formation of colloidal nanosheets. Therefore, we have introduced an acetate-free method. The energy gap of the nanosheet is mainly determined by its thickness while the lateral size of the nanosheet has a significant effect on its conductivity, electronic coupling with other materials and the rate of light emission. Therefore, tuning the lateral size of the nanosheet is critical for its application in functional devices. Our work has addressed the challenge of tuning the lateral size of colloidal PbS nanosheets by changing reaction parameters, reducing the Pb to S molar ratio, using long-chain chloroalkane and changing the concentration of chloroalkane. Nanosheets with a small lateral size called nanoplatelets to show a narrow light-emission linewidth around 70 mev and an exciton peak. The platelets have a square shape with a typical width and length 20 nm. The exciton binding energy derived from the absorption spectrum is about 25 meV. Efficient electron transfer from photoexcited electrons from colloidal PbS nanosheets to TiO2 nanoparticles is demonstrated. This transfer occurred faster than compared to quantum dots. This will be more useful for fabricating future solar cell devices.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, the search efforts have shifted from the toxic II-VI, III-V and IV-VI semiconductors to more environmentally friendly materials. Among Group II-V semiconductors, Zn3P2 has shown to be a more benign option, similar to Group IV (Ge, Si) materials, for future applications in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. This work is dedicated to the development of wet-chemical synthetic routes of (1) Zn3P2 and (2) Group IV (Ge, Si, Si1-xGex) nanocrystals with precise control over composition, crystal structure, size and dispersity by adjusting different reaction parameters such as temperature, time and solvent composition. Different characterizations will also be employed to probe the size- and composition-dependent physical and optical properties of resulting products. The first part of this work illustrates the synthesis of luminescent Zn3P2 nanocrystals, an earth-abundant and a direct-gap semiconductor possessing high absorption coefficient and long carrier diffusion length, which uphold promising potential in many optoelectronic applications. A hot injection method by using highly reactive P and Zn precursors (P[Si(CH3)3]3 and diethyl zinc) in hexadecylamine and octadecene was developed to prepare a series of alkyl-amine-passivated tetragonal Zn3P2 crystallites with varying size sizes. Substantial blue shifts in the absorption onsets (2.11 - 2.73 eV) in comparison to the bulk counterpart (1.4 - 1.5 eV) and a clear red shift with increasing particle size indicates the quantum confinement effects. This is also consistent with the photoluminescent studies with the size-tunable maxima in the visible region (469 - 545 nm) as a function of growth temperature and time. The phase purity and alkyl-amine passivation of the nanocrystals were determined by structural and surface analysis, confirming the presence of N - Zn and N - P bonds on the tetragonal Zn3P2 crystallites. The second part of this works focuses on the development of a colloidal synthetic strategy of alkyl-amine capped Si1-xGex nanocrystals with control over size- and composition-dependent optical properties. Despite their high miscibility at all compositions, developing a wet-chemical synthesis of Si1-xGex alloys in the nanoscale remains a challenging task, owing to the difference of their crystallization temperatures and the high surface oxidation of Si. Thus an adapted colloidal method is utilized to fabricate single-element Ge and Si nanocrystals. Powder X-ray diffraction indicates successful production of cubic crystalline Ge and amorphous Si nanoparticles individually in oleylamine/octadecene (surfactant/solvent) mixture at 300°C. Absorption onset values of 1.28 eV and 3.11 eV are obtained for resulting Ge and Si colloids, respectively. By alloying these two materials in their nano-regime, tunable optical properties can be achieved throughout the visible to the near IR region by simply varying their elemental compositions. The success of this bandgap engineering process offers more options for new material design by taking advantage of unique properties from each component material.
