Book Synopsis The Market for Non-traditional Agricultural Exports by : David Hallam
Download or read book The Market for Non-traditional Agricultural Exports written by David Hallam and published by FAO. This book was released on 2004 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has witnessed a steady decline in the dollar values of many of the traditional agricultural export crops (TAEs) from developing countries, and this has highlighted the risks of depending upon a very narrow export base for foreign exchange earning. This report examines a range of issues related to the market for non-traditional agricultural exports (NTAEs), including data on trends during the years 1992 to 2001, both in volume and value terms; leading developing country exporters; the trade and import policies of the major destination buyers; the prospects for developing niche markets for organic and fair trade NTAEs.

Book Synopsis Realizing the Gains from Trade by : Jorge F. Balat
Download or read book Realizing the Gains from Trade written by Jorge F. Balat and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores the role of export costs in the process of poverty reduction in rural Africa. We claim that the marketing costs that emerge when the commercialization of export crops requires intermediaries can lead to lower participation into export cropping and, thus, to higher poverty. We test the model using data from the Uganda National Household Survey. We show that: i) farmers living in villages with fewer outlets for sales of agricultural exports are likely to be poorer than farmers residing in market-endowed villages; ii) market availability leads to increased household participation in export cropping (coffee, tea, cotton, fruits); iii) households engaged in export cropping are less likely to be poor than subsistence-based households. We conclude that the availability of markets for agricultural export crops help realize the gains from trade. This result uncovers the role of complementary factors that provide market access and reduce marketing costs as key building blocks in the link between the gains from export opportunities and the poor.

Book Synopsis Market Opportunities for African Agriculture by : Xinshen Diao
Download or read book Market Opportunities for African Agriculture written by Xinshen Diao and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2007 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can East and Southern African nations reduce poverty and hunger through agricultural growth? How can they create sufficient market demand to power such growth? This report proposes answers to these questions, applying a general equilibrium framework to the experiences of Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The authors conclude that, for countries like these, promoting traditional agricultural exports, developing nontraditional exports, and increasing food staple growth will probably not be sufficient to generate a significant level of economic growth. Instead, the model simulations suggest that reductions in marketing costs through improved infrastructure and development of market institutions, along with significant growth in the nonagricultural economy (besides that generated by agricultural growth linkages) are necessary conditions for rapid economic growth. This report's findings are a valuable first step toward understanding how East and Southern African nations can achieve economywide growth and poverty reduction.

Book Synopsis El Salvador, Rural Development Study by :
Download or read book El Salvador, Rural Development Study written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although El Salvador has recorded impressive overall economic growth in the 1990s, during this period, agricultural growth has lagged considerably below the rest of the economy, which raises concerns about the long-run capacity of the sector to raise incomes and employment in rural areas and contribute to overall growth. The main objectives of this sector review are twofold: to develop a strategy to revitalize the agricultural sector and realize its full potential for efficient and sustainable growth by enhancing competitiveness; and to present the main findings of the analysis of rural poverty and develop its implications for the design of a strategy for poverty alleviation.
