Book excerpt: In 2012, a Forestry Special Interest Group (FSIG) was founded within the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS). Besides a general commitment to promoting the application of operational research (OR) to forest management and forest products industry problems, the FSIG has two concrete mandates: organizing the forestry cluster at the annual CORS conference, and managing the editorial process for forestry-themed special issues of INFOR. The FSIG has been very successful in the first of these two mandates, with record attendance at the forestry cluster over the last four years, hosting of several special sessions, financial and in-kind support from the NSERC Strategic Network on Value Chain Optimization (VCO), and the inauguration of the David Martell Student Paper Prize in Forestry (DMSPPF). This is the first compilation of forestry-themed papers since the inauguration of the CORS FSIG. The six pieces selected for the special issue, now published as a book, feature applications of OR to a wide range of forest management and forest products industry contexts, including supply-chain planning, lumber production planning, demand-driven harvest and transportation planning, and fire-aware wood supply planning. This book was originally published as a special issue of the INFOR: Information Systems and Operational Research journal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Management of Industrial Forest Plantations. Theoretical Foundations and Applications provides a synthesis of current knowledge about industrial forestry management planning processes. It covers components of the forest supply chain ranging from modelling techniques to management planning approaches and information and communication technology support. It may provide effective support to education, research and outreach activities that focus on forest industrial plantations management. It may contribute further to support forest managers when developing industrial plantations management plans. The book includes the discussion of applications in 26 Management Planning in Actions boxes. These applications highlight the linkage between theory and practice and the contribution of models, methods and management planning approaches to the efficiency and the effectiveness of industrial plantations management planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Analytics with R combines practical, down-to-earth forestry data analysis and solutions to real forest management challenges with state-of-the-art statistical and data-handling functionality. The authors adopt a problem-driven approach, in which statistical and mathematical tools are introduced in the context of the forestry problem that they can help to resolve. All the tools are introduced in the context of real forestry datasets, which provide compelling examples of practical applications. The modeling challenges covered within the book include imputation and interpolation for spatial data, fitting probability density functions to tree measurement data using maximum likelihood, fitting allometric functions using both linear and non-linear least-squares regression, and fitting growth models using both linear and non-linear mixed-effects modeling. The coverage also includes deploying and using forest growth models written in compiled languages, analysis of natural resources and forestry inventory data, and forest estate planning and optimization using linear programming. The book would be ideal for a one-semester class in forest biometrics or applied statistics for natural resources management. The text assumes no programming background, some introductory statistics, and very basic applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: Students with diverse backgrounds will face a multitude of decisions in a variety of engineering, scientific, industrial, and financial settings. They will need to know how to identify problems that the methods of operations research (OR) can solve, how to structure the problems into standard mathematical models, and finally how to apply or develop computational tools to solve the problems. Perfect for any one-semester course in OR, Operations Research: A Practical Introduction answers all of these needs. In addition to providing a practical introduction and guide to using OR techniques, it includes a timely examination of innovative methods and practical issues related to the development and use of computer implementations. It provides a sound introduction to the mathematical models relevant to OR and illustrates the effective use of OR techniques with examples drawn from industrial, computing, engineering, and business applications Many students will take only one course in the techniques of Operations Research. Operations Research: A Practical Introduction offers them the greatest benefit from that course through a broad survey of the techniques and tools available for quantitative decision making. It will also encourage other students to pursue more advanced studies and provides you a concise, well-structured, vehicle for delivering the best possible overview of the discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the scientific methods devised for forest planning support timber production ignoring the existence of forest functions other than wood production. Fortunately, the realisation that the forest planning methods available today do not correspond to the needs of today's forestry has activated forest researchers to develop and adopt new methodologies and approaches, which are specifically aimed at multi-objective situations. This book is about the quantitative approach to multi-objective forest planning. The emphasis is on topics that are rather new and not yet systematically applied in forest planning practice. The topics and methodologies discussed in this book include: measurement of preferences, multiple criteria decision analysis, use of GIS to support multi-objective forest management, heuristic optimization, spatial optimisation, and the measurement of non-wood forest outputs. By reading the book, a planning specialist, student or a researcher will get an insight into some of the current developments in forest planning research.

Book excerpt: The use of operations research (OR) in natural resources management (NRM) is an evolving research field with many application areas. Decision makers in NRM are often not aware of the possibilities that OR techniques offer them to solve their daily challenges. This special issue contributes to close this gap by showing how OR can be useful in different application areas of NRM.
