Book excerpt: The U.S. Army teamed up with cartoonist and graphic artist Will Eisner to produce teaching tools for U.S. soldiers in a medium that they could easily understand. The M16A1 Rifle: Operation and Preventive Maintenance, first printed in 1969, features a female narrator who instructs GIs on the proper care of their AR-15 (military name M16A1) rifles—firearms notorious for jamming and malfunctioning. More than a simple manual and step-by-step guide, this unconventional yet important military document tried to appeal to soldiers with suggestive chapter titles such as “How to Strip Your Baby,” “What to Do in a Jam,” “Sweet 16,” and “All the Way with Négligé.” A copy of the thirty-two-page booklet was issued to nearly every soldier serving in Vietnam.

Book excerpt: Rather than providing rote solutions, this manual provides a doctrinal framework of principles; tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP); terms; and symbols for the employment of the Infantry rifle company. This framework will help Infantry rifle company leaders effectively- - Exploit capabilities unique to the Infantry. - Reduce the vulnerability of the unit. - Plan and conduct full-spectrum operations. - Accomplish their missions in various tactical situations, from stability and civil support to high-intensity combat. - Win on the battlefield. The Infantry companies of the SBCT and HBCT mostly use the same doctrine, but cover more specific doctrine in their own manuals. The main target audience for this manual includes Infantry rifle company commanders, executive officers, first sergeants, platoon sergeants and platoon leaders. Military instructors, evaluators, training and doctrine developers will also find it useful, as will other Infantry company commanders (HHC and weapons company), Infantry battalion staff officers, service school instructors, and commissioning source instructors. This publication applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG), the National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), and the US Army Reserve (USAR) unless otherwise stated. Leaders must understand this manual before they can train their companies using ARTEP 7-10-MTP. They should use this manual as a set along with the publications listed in the References.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the May, 2016 version of US Army Training Circular - Rifle and Carbine. This is the latest version of the US Army training manual for the M16 rifle and M4 Carbine. This manual has been completely updated to reflect current battlefield realities and the almost dizzying array of attachments available to the current ground soldier designed to help them more effectively and lethally engage the enemy. It covers the basics of how to handle and shoot a rifle as well as the proper way to use optics and other aiming aids. The appendix on zeroing is especially well written. It also details all the different stages soldiers in basic training go through to achieve initial qualification. The point of the manual is not to enable someone to be Rambo but to take what is at best a complex subject and make it understandable for someone who has never held a weapon in their life. The goal is to make competent shooters out of inexperienced civilians and the Army rifle training program does that.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This field manual provides the information needed to train and equip snipers and to aid them in their missions and operations. It is intended for use by commanders, staff, trainers, snipers, and soldiers at training posts, Army schools, and units. A sniper is a military/paramilitary marksman who engages targets from positions of concealment or at distances exceeding the target's detection capabilities. Snipers generally have specialized training and are equipped with high-precision rifles and high-magnification optics, and often also serve as scouts/ observers, feeding tactical information back to their units or command headquarters. In addition to long-range and high-grade marksmanship, military snipers are trained in a variety of special operation techniques: detection, stalking, target range estimation methods, camouflage, tracking, bushcraft, fieldcraft, infiltration, special reconnaissance and observation, surveillance, and target acquisition. Snipers need to have complete control of their bodies and senses to be effective. They also need to have the skill set to use data from their scope and monitors to adjust their aim to hit targets that are extremely far away. In training, snipers are given charts that they're drilled on to ensure they can make last-minute calculations when they are in the field.
