Book excerpt: Excerpt from Opening a Highway to the Pacific, 1838 1846 By 1839, the bubble of internal paper expansion had burst; and, in a few years, the times were such that the old frontiersmen, and many others, began to feel the pinch of depression more keenly than they cared to endure. The monetary chaos particularly had been aggravated by the responsiveness of the government to the will of its people, and, in the absence of political foresight and strong leadership, the people were left to devise their own remedy. All became land poor, and at once began to cast about for relief, in various forms of external expansion. The breeders of mules and horses and hogs cry out, Let us have Texas, right or wrong! Wrote a Democratic hench man, in 1844. Texas was promptly annexed, Oregon set tled, California conquered, and the area of the United States enlarged by one third. The people went off on another mad career of speculation, discovering new glories in the West, greatest among them, gold. It was a career that was not cut short until the rise of a crucial issue between the States brought civil war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road to Oregon: A Chronicle of the Great Emigrant Trail It is singular that no comprehensive historical treatment of the Oregon Trail has until now been attempted. The subject is of wide interest; the material is abundant, and it has long been available; for of the great wealth of recently discovered material that compels the rewriting of much of the history of the Far West, little has been added to the early documentation of the Trail. Historical essays, such as Professor F. G. Young's The Oregon Trail, Mr. W. E. Connelley's "National Aspects of the Old Oregon Trail" and H. M. Chittenden's brief and compact sketch in The American Fur Trade of the Far West, have outlined the subject; and more recently has appeared the excellent study of some of its phases, Opening a Highway to the Pacific, 1838- 1846, by Mr. James Christy Bell, Jr.; but the writing of an extended history with the Trail as its central theme has somehow been neglected. In 1848 Francis Parkman published The Oregon and California Trail. It is a book that has had its hundreds of thousands of readers, and doubtless will always be popular. To students, however, it is disappointing by reason of what it omits. Of the Trail itself the book gives little information. Parkman was ill; he was young, and he had not yet developed that first essential of a historian - the spirit of inquiry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of the transcontinental railroad (1865–1869) marked a milestone in United States history, symbolizing both the joining of the country’s two coasts and the taming of its frontier wilderness by modern technology. But it was through the power of images—and especially the photograph—that the railroad attained its iconic status. Iron Muse provides a unique look at the production, distribution, and publication of images of the transcontinental railroad: from their use as an official record by the railroad corporations, to their reproduction in the illustrated press and travel guides, and finally to their adaptation to direct sales and albums in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Tracing the complex relationships and occasional conflicts between photographer, publisher, and curator as they crafted the photographs’ different meanings over time, Willumson provides a comprehensive portrayal of the creation and evolution of an important slice of American visual culture.
