Book excerpt: Drawing on the experiences and lessons of over forty years working on the frontline of reconciliation and peace building, in Northern Ireland, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, Peter B. Price explores what it means to respond to the biblical call to "seek peace ... and pursue it" (Psalm 34:14). What is required of Christians today in the light of the increasing number of wars, insurgencies, holocausts, and genocide, is a deeper understanding of what true peacemaking costs and an answer to the question: "Can Christianity continue to sanction war?"

Book excerpt: In 1984 Evangelicals for Social Action founder Ron Sider posed the question: 'What would happen if we in the Christian church developed a new non-violent peacekeeping force ready to move into violent conflicts and stand peacefully between warring parties? . . . Everyone assumes that for the sake of peace it is moral and just for soldiers to get killed by the hundreds of thousands, even millions. Do we not have as much courage and faith as soldiers?' Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) has been trying to answer those questions since 1986. CPT has responded to invitations from grassroots organisers on five continents who are using non-violent strategies to confront systemic oppression. This book provides a glimpse into the mistakes and successes, the triumphsand tragedies, that teams have shared in with local co-workers in various nations. It also continues to pose the question: What would happen if CPT's efforts were multiplied by millions of Christians with a radical commitment to Jesusi non-violent gospel?

When conflict turns into peace, frustration becomes clarity and turmoil becomes unity. When conflict turns into peace, God is glorified. But how do we find peace without ignoring our problems? How do we pursue unity without compromising on our principles? The Path of a Peacemaker offers a simple, proven path to a lifestyle of peace. It guides you through an examination of your own personal story, identifying the origins of your hopes and fears. It invites you to understand and embrace God's approach to conflict, take responsibility for your own part in conflict, and connect with others in a spirit of humility as you learn to listen first, ask for forgiveness, and move forward, even if the conflict remains unresolved. Pastors, counselors, and anyone who is dealing with conflict at home, work, church, or with friends will find this book a vital tool.

Book excerpt: What does 'Blessed are the peacemakers' mean in practice? When is war a just war? Should outsiders intervene in civil wars, and how? How can Christians effectively engage in resolving conflict? How do we achieve reconciliation? Peter Dixon offers a moral framework on which to base our thinking about war and peace, undergirded by a solid confidence in God's sovereignty, as we face the uncertainty of the real world. 'I don't think we need to take responsibility for righting all the wrongs of the world like Superman.' he says. 'It is enough for us to do what we can, when we can, where we can.' Peacemakers evolves at another level too. As the author takes us down an icy Kabul street, or allows us to observe children celebrating a shaky peace in South Sudan, we experience first-hand the backcloth against which international peacebuilding takes place. Some comments on Peacemakers 'A work of extraordinary relevance in today’s troubled and volatile times', Lord (Richard) Dannatt, former head of the British Army. 'A gentle, wise and helpful companion as we try to make sense of the conflicts in our world', Ram Gidoomal CBE, Chairman of Traidcraft, Stewardship and Cotton Connect. 'Given the importance of peace in Christian priorities, I hope this book will be given the attention it deserves', Michael Schluter CBE, Founder of the Jubilee Centre, Relationships Foundation and Relationships Global. 'A thought-provoking and engaging book.', Air Commodore Mark Leakey, former Director Armed Forces’ Christian Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus wants YOU to join a great company of peacemakers-an army that sheds no blood. This book reviews what the Bible says about peacemaking and tells the stories of Christian peacemakers through the centuries. Jesus is God's most important clue to peace, so we spend a lot of time with him. But, we also explore how Jesus connects with God's purposes at creation, with war in the Old Testament, with our responsibility to government, and with the realities of life in a nuclear age. We discuss practical issues young peacemakers are facing-career choices, military service, the nuclear arms race, and war taxes. Joel Kauffman's new cartoon strip, Pontius' Puddle, featuring a pair of precocious frogs, provides pungent perspectives on peacemaking throughout the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You’ve probably heard someone say, “I go to a Bible believing church.” The implication is pretty clear: if you go somewhere else you’re attending a “Bible doubting” church. Some fundamentalist and evangelical pastors actually say just that from their pulpits. It’s branding genius! It’s also dismissive of most of Christianity. In this book I hope to reclaim words like “moderate” and “progressive” as a style of spirituality that actually reflects Jesus’ teaching. My goal is to present a scriptural basis for the beliefs of the other half of American Protestantism. I hope that those who read this book see that our differences from fundamentalist and evangelical congregations are grounded on an abiding trust in God’s goodness, especially as we see it in Jesus. It’s my desire to establish how discipleship in our communities is driven by the belief that the sacrificial love we see expressed by Jesus for us, should also be expressed by us in our everyday lives. Jesus calls us to follow his way of life, which is reflected in the Beatitudes. That kind of Christianity looks a lot different from what is being taught in most big-box churches across the country.

Book excerpt: Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers." But it often seems like conflict and disagreement are unavoidable. Serious, divisive conflict is everywhere-within families, in the church, and out in the world. And it can seem impossible to overcome its negative force in our lives. In The Peacemaker, Ken Sande presents a comprehensive and practical theology for conflict resolution designed to bring about not only a cease-fire but also unity and harmony. Sande takes readers beyond resolving conflicts to true, life-changing reconciliation with family members, coworkers, and fellow believers. Biblically based, The Peacemaker is full of godly wisdom and useful suggestions that are easily applied to any relationship needing reconciliation. Sande's years of experience as an attorney and as president of Peacemaker Ministries will strengthen readers' confidence as they stand in the gap as peacemakers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to the Christian ethics of war and peace. It advances peacebuilding as a needed challenge to and expansion of the traditional framework of just war theory and pacifism. It builds on a critical reading of historical landmarks from the Bible through Augustine, Aquinas, the Reformers, Christian peace movements, and key modern figures like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Reinhold Niebuhr, and recent popes. Similar to just-war theory, peacebuilding is committed to social change and social justice but includes some theorists and practitioners who accept the use of force in extreme cases of self-defense or humanitarian intervention. Unlike just-war theorists, they do not see the justification of war as part of the Christian mission. Unlike traditional pacifists, they do see social change as necessary and possible and, as such, requiring Christian participation in public efforts. Cahill argues that transformative Christian social participation is demanded by the gospel and the example of Jesus, and can produce the avoidance, resolution, or reduction of conflicts. And yet obstacles are significant, and expectations must be realistic. Decisions to use armed force against injustice, even when they meet the criteria of just war, will be ambiguous and tragic from a Christian perspective. Regarding war and peace, the focus of Christian theology, ethics, and practice should not be on justifying war but on practical and hopeful interreligious peacebuilding.

God calls every Christian to be a peacemaker, but what does that look like in real life? Most of the time, biblical peacemaking simply means two friends meeting together over a cup of coffee and asking each other, "How does the gospel of Jesus Christ affect how you should respond to this conflict?" As you learn to live a lifestyle of reconciliation, you'll see that peacemaking sometimes comes with cream and sugar. This Peacemaking Church small group kit includes everthing your church needs to pursue peace together in ministry.

Book excerpt: Peacemaking includes a large array of activities from local to global attempts to attain peace. It includes consideration of international, interstate, and intertribal conflict resolution; communal, personal, and interpersonal social justice; deterrence of the use of nuclear weapons; design of international treaties that prevent war or other forms of international conflict; disarmament; international organizations that secure the order among nations; and even, from some points of view, war. As the 20th century drew to a close, we have witnessed peacemakers trying to end ethnic cleansing, reinstate justly elected political leaders, and reach compromises in the ideological differences that perpetuate age-old conflicts. We also see peacemaking in our schools, homes, and workplaces. Philosophers have long been interested in peacemaking in one form or another, and philosophical accounts of peacemaking reflect the variety of perspectives, methods, and activities developed in pursuing peacemaking. In some instances, philosophers expand upon the situations, activities, and methods of the peacemaker in the field. The essays in this volume propose some theoretical arguments for various aspects of peacemaking, offer nonmilitary alternatives to war, and discuss practical examples of peacemaking in daily life. The contributors analyze power relations, language, social groupings, and distribution of resources. At times, they draw insight from social and historical models of conflict and conflict-resolution. This collection of essays on peacemaking aims to enlighten contemporary social and political discussions and contribute to achieving the ever-challenging goal of peace.
