Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kate and Hugh are part of a university scientific expedition in the snowy wastes of Norway, investigating the environmental impact of climate change. Whilst on a routine sample collecting exercise on a bleak snow field, Hugh discovers two bodies buried in the ice. An excavation of the site is prioritised but, with night falling quickly and temperatures plunging, Hugh is left to keep watch alone, until he is joined later by Kate. A fluid movement out of full sight caught Hugh’s eye. It wasn’t the natural flurry of snow in the wind; it was a purposeful movement. Suddenly, a stark shapeless figure was transiently present and then, just as suddenly, gone, its outline blending into the grey night and scurrying snow blasts. During the night, the site is visited by a wolf and a man dressed in ancient Nordic clothing who steal the bodies and disappear off into a blizzard. Kate and Hugh follow the strange pair but succumb to the cold. Awaking from unconsciousness, they meet the man they have been chasing – ‘the Guardian’ and his guide Janus, a wolf and her cub Lado. Janus explains that both he and the Guardian have been battling to prevent chaos overturning the unity of the ‘paraverse’, which is being threatened by Prince Adren. In this paraverse, each universe, planet, ecosystem and creature, no matter how distant, is connected, and Hugh and Kate are part of the key to preventing the Prince turning order to chaos. To do this they have to face Prince Adren in different time periods in different guises, with varied outcomes, until they can finally overcome him... Only Blue Will Do is a gripping time-slip fantasy that sees Kate and Hugh battle for humanity across different eras.
Download or read book The Party Is Over written by Mike Lofgren and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-08-27 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling exposé of what passes for business as usual in Washington today There was a time, not so very long ago, when perfectly rational people ran the Republican Party. So how did the party of Lincoln become the party of lunatics? That is what this book aims to answer. Fear not, the Dems come in for their share of tough talk— they are zombies, a party of the living dead. Mike Lofgren came to Washington in the early eighties—those halcyon, post–Nixonian glory days—for what he imagined would be a short stint on Capitol Hill. He has witnessed quite a few low points in his twenty-eight years on the Hill—but none quite so pitiful as the antics of the current crop of legislators whom we appear to have elected. Based on the explosive article Lofgren wrote when he resigned in disgust after the debt ceiling crisis, The Party Is Over is a funny and impassioned exposé of everything that is wrong with Washington. Obama and his tired cohorts are no angels but they have nothing on the Republicans, whose wily strategists are bankrupting the country one craven vote at a time. Be prepared for some fireworks.
Download or read book On What Matters written by Derek Parfit and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-05-26 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On What Matters is a major work in moral philosophy. It is the long-awaited follow-up to Derek Parfit's 1984 book Reasons and Persons, one of the landmarks of twentieth-century philosophy. Parfit now presents a powerful new treatment of reasons, rationality, and normativity, and a critical examination of three systematic moral theories - Kant's ethics, contractualism, and consequentialism - leading to his own ground-breaking synthetic conclusion. Along the way he discusses a wide range of moral issues, such as the significance of consent, treating people as a means rather than an end, and free will and responsibility. On What Matters is already the most-discussed work in moral philosophy: its publication is likely to establish it as a modern classic which everyone working on moral philosophy will have to read, and which many others will turn to for stimulation and illumination. The second volume of Derek Parfit's magnum opus is in four parts. The first presents critiques of his work by four of the world's leading moral philosophers. The second contains his responses. The third and longest part is a self-contained monograph by Parfit on normativity. The final part comprises seven new essays by Parfit on Kant, reasons, irrationality, autonomy - and why the universe exists.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Ontology by : Nikk Effingham
Download or read book An Introduction to Ontology written by Nikk Effingham and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging and wide-ranging new book, Nikk Effingham provides an introduction to contemporary ontology - the study of what exists - and its importance for philosophy today. He covers the key topics in the field, from the ontology of holes, numbers and possible worlds, to space, time and the ontology of material objects - for instance, whether there are composite objects such as tables, chairs or even you and me. While starting from the basics, every chapter is up-to-date with the most recent developments in the field, introducing both longstanding theories and cutting-edge advances. As well as discussing the latest issues in ontology, Effingham also helpfully deals in-depth with different methodological principles (including theory choice, Quinean ontological commitment and Meinongianism) and introduces them alongside an example ontological theory that puts them into practice. This accessible and comprehensive introduction will be essential reading for upper-level undergraduate and post-graduate students, as well as any reader interested in the present state of the subject.

Book Synopsis Stones in My Heart Forever by : Kathryn Bedard
Download or read book Stones in My Heart Forever written by Kathryn Bedard and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the state of New Jersey set up the Family Assistance Center at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Little has been shared about how New Jersey rapidly mobilized to care for individuals who felt the impact of the disaster. Stones in My Heart Forever was written as a journal in the field as events unfolded, giving us a rare glimpse into the internal operations of a disaster relief site. Stones in My Heart Forever is much more than a description of events: it is filled with soul-searing multi-sensory images of what the author witnessed and experienced alongside other responders who suddenly found themselves in the midst of this historical event. Most of us who pored over media accounts with tears in our eyes could not comprehend the staggering reality or the massive emotional rush of actually seeing America burning. This very intimate book allows us to become honored visitors who come to understand this disaster as never before when we share in the experiences of responders, families, and survivors, the stages of grief, the touching lessons of strength, hope, and courage, and the aftermath of repeated exposure to trauma there is a cost to caring. Stones in My Heart Forever is a testimony to American pride and resiliency, and confirmation of the ways in which simple, ordinary people rose to extraordinary heights of courage and compassion. It is a must read for clinicians, responders, educators, students, clergy. It honors all of us who have been affected by the events of September 11, 2001, especially the unsung heroes who we meet and come to know on these pages.
