Book excerpt: In this second volume of the successful Exemplars of Assessment in Higher Education, editors Souza and Rose share examples of assessment practice from over fifteen distinct and diverse Higher Education Institutions, including international contributions. Building upon the work of the first volume, the case studies in this book reflect the changes in assessment and higher education in the post-Covid education environment. The institutions that appear in this book were chosen for having an effective assessment approach in one or more of the following areas: career readiness; distance education; diversity, equity, and inclusion; or general education. Each part of the book discusses one of these four areas, with chapters that feature real-life examples from the educators who teach at the college or university. Featuring a Foreword by AAC&U President Lynn Pasquerella, the work highlighted in this book is also aligned with AAC&U’s Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education (VALUE) initiative to help educators make the best decisions about measuring student learning. This book is ideal for university educators and assessment practitioners looking to diversify and enhance their assessment practices.

Book excerpt: Get started with an innovative approach to teaching history that develops literacy and higher-order thinking skills, connects the past to students’ lives, and meets state and national standards (grades 7–12). Now in a second edition, this popular book provides an introductory unit to help teachers build a trustful classroom climate; over 70 primary sources (including a dozen new ones) organized into thematic units structured around an essential question from U.S. history; and a final unit focusing on periodization and chronology. As students analyze carefully excerpted documents, they build an understanding of how diverse historical figures have approached key issues. At the same time, students learn to participate in civic debates and develop their own views on what it means to be a 21st-century American. Each unit connects to current events with dynamic classroom activities that make history come alive. In addition to the documents, this teaching manual provides strategies to assess student learning; mini-lectures designed to introduce documents; activities to help students process, display, and integrate their learning; guidance to help teachers create their own units, and more. Book Features: Addresses the politicization of history head-on with updated material that allows students entry points into the debates swirling around their education.Makes document-based teaching easy with a curated collection of primary sources (speeches by presidents and protesters, Supreme Court cases, political cartoons) excerpted into manageable chunks for students. Challenges the “master narrative” of U.S. history with texts from Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Malcolm X, César Chavez, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, and Judy Heumann. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Before long I began to understand that showing up, being there, helping in an otherwise helpless situation was made heroic by the same gravity I had sensed when I first stood in that embalming room as a boy„the presence of the dead made the presence of the living more meaningful somehow, as if it involved a basic and intuitively human duty to witness." „from Chapter 1, "How We Come to Be the Ones We Are" Two of the most authoritative voices on the funeral industry come together here in one volume to discuss the current state of the funeral. Through their different lenses„one as a preacher and one as a funeral director„Thomas G. Long and Thomas Lynch alternately discuss several challenges facing "the good funeral," including the commercial aspects that have led many to be suspicious of funeral directors, the sometimes tense relationship between pastors and funeral directors, the tendency of modern funerals to exclude the body from the service, and the rapid growth in cremation. The book features forewords from Patrick Lynch, President of the National Funeral Directors Association, and Barbara Brown Taylor, highly praised author and preacher. It is an essential resource for funeral directors, morticians, and pastors, and anyone else with an interest in current funeral practices.

This book was released on 2008-07-26 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is one of the largest examples of U.S. public-private partnerships. Founded in 1982, SBIR was designed to encourage small business to develop new processes and products and to provide quality research in support of the many missions of the U.S. government, including health, energy, the environment, and national defense. In response to a request from the U.S. Congress, the National Research Council assessed SBIR as administered by the five federal agencies that together make up 96 percent of program expenditures. This book, one of six in the series, reports on the SBIR program at the National Science Foundation. The study finds that the SBIR program is sound in concept and effective in practice, but that it can also be improved. Currently, the program is delivering results that meet most of the congressional objectives, including stimulating technological innovation, increasing private-sector commercialization of innovations, using small businesses to meet federal research and development needs, and fostering participation by minority and disadvantaged persons. The book suggests ways in which the program can improve operations, continue to increase private-sector commercialization, and improve participation by women and minorities.
