Book excerpt: A new procedure for constructing one-sided truncated sequential t-tests and its application to natural resource sampling are described. Monte Carlo procedures were used to develop a series of one-sided truncated sequential t-tests and the associated approximations to the operating characteristic and average sample number functions. Different truncation points and decision boundary patterns were examined. The fixed sample size t-test and Barnard's open one-sided sequential t-test were compared with the new procedure. The upper one-sided test described can easily be modified to a lower one-sided test.

Book Synopsis Sequential Analysis by : David Siegmund
Download or read book Sequential Analysis written by David Siegmund and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern theory of Sequential Analysis came into existence simultaneously in the United States and Great Britain in response to demands for more efficient sampling inspection procedures during World War II. The develop ments were admirably summarized by their principal architect, A. Wald, in his book Sequential Analysis (1947). In spite of the extraordinary accomplishments of this period, there remained some dissatisfaction with the sequential probability ratio test and Wald's analysis of it. (i) The open-ended continuation region with the concomitant possibility of taking an arbitrarily large number of observations seems intol erable in practice. (ii) Wald's elegant approximations based on "neglecting the excess" of the log likelihood ratio over the stopping boundaries are not especially accurate and do not allow one to study the effect oftaking observa tions in groups rather than one at a time. (iii) The beautiful optimality property of the sequential probability ratio test applies only to the artificial problem of testing a simple hypothesis against a simple alternative. In response to these issues and to new motivation from the direction of controlled clinical trials numerous modifications of the sequential probability ratio test were proposed and their properties studied-often by simulation or lengthy numerical computation. (A notable exception is Anderson, 1960; see III.7.) In the past decade it has become possible to give a more complete theoretical analysis of many of the proposals and hence to understand them better.

Book Synopsis Statistical Testing Strategies in the Health Sciences by : Albert Vexler
Download or read book Statistical Testing Strategies in the Health Sciences written by Albert Vexler and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistical Testing Strategies in the Health Sciences provides a compendium of statistical approaches for decision making, ranging from graphical methods and classical procedures through computationally intensive bootstrap strategies to advanced empirical likelihood techniques. It bridges the gap between theoretical statistical methods and practical procedures applied to the planning and analysis of health-related experiments. The book is organized primarily based on the type of questions to be answered by inference procedures or according to the general type of mathematical derivation. It establishes the theoretical framework for each method, with a substantial amount of chapter notes included for additional reference. It then focuses on the practical application for each concept, providing real-world examples that can be easily implemented using corresponding statistical software code in R and SAS. The book also explains the basic elements and methods for constructing correct and powerful statistical decision-making processes to be adapted for complex statistical applications. With techniques spanning robust statistical methods to more computationally intensive approaches, this book shows how to apply correct and efficient testing mechanisms to various problems encountered in medical and epidemiological studies, including clinical trials. Theoretical statisticians, medical researchers, and other practitioners in epidemiology and clinical research will appreciate the book’s novel theoretical and applied results. The book is also suitable for graduate students in biostatistics, epidemiology, health-related sciences, and areas pertaining to formal decision-making mechanisms.

Book excerpt: This book contains topics that can be covered in a single-semester course. Only elementary proofs are provided, and thus the mathematics and statistics are maintained at a basic level. Only a course in each of three areas ? advanced calculus, probability and statistical inference ? is assumed of the student. The book has a chapter on applications to biostatistics and a supplement presenting computer programs for selected sequential procedures. Identified problems are provided at the end of each chapter.
