Book excerpt: Forests are major components of the earth's natural resources and they are increasingly critical to the welfare of the U.S. economy, environment, and population. Desires to improve forest management and productivity, preserve biodiversity, maintain ecologic integrity, and provide societal services, such as recreation and tourism, necessitate a strong forestry-research base. Given the clear importance of forestry research in sustaining forests for the future, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service asked the Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources of the National Academies to undertake a study of the nation's capacity in forestry research. The Committee on National Capacity in Forestry Research was appointed to carry out the study, which was conducted to review the current expertise and status of forestry research and to examine the approaches of natural resources education and forestry-research organizations to meet future needs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Research Progress in 1966: McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program During the year, the 330 problems which are being pursued required the combined efforts of h21 senior scientists, and participation in a number of the projects afforded excellent research training experience to 361 graduate students preparing for forestry research careers. Results of research were described in 195 publications, averaging about per institution. How these numbers of projects, of senior scientists, of graduate students receiving training, and of publications describing progress are divided among the partici pating institutions is shown in the.appendix. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Research Progress in 1971: McIntire-Stennis Cooperative Forestry Research Program These are the raw findings of research, often not yet fully tested and certainly not polished and placed in their settings. They have been grouped under various headings for the guidance of the reader, but they have not and cannot yet be placed in their full context. One study analyzes the effects of suburban development on the adjoining and intermixed forest and wildland ecosystems. A second attempts to develop improved methods of sawing to enable the recovery of a greater volume of lumber from a given volume of logs. A third is involved with designing a computer model of a managed forest through which the effects of various cutting patterns can be simulated as a means of testing the effects of alternative management plans on the yield of timber. A fourth explores the interactions between deer and certain hardwood forest types, recognizing that deer may be considered as either a product of the forest management program or a threat to the establishment and growth of forest regeneration of desired species. The list goes on and on. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: S2The Fernow Experimental Forest, a 3,640 acre tract on the Monongahela National Forest, was set aside for the use of this research unit as an outdoor laboratory for studies in managing mountainous forest land. The forest stands here are mixtures of old-growth and second-growth hardwoods dating from around 1905, when heavy cuttings were made. In topography, history of cutting, climate, and variety of species the Fernow Forest is representative of much of the timberland in West Virginia and adjacent states. Though the Fernow Forest has been the main locale of the research program, other studies have been made in other parts of West Virginia, in western Maryland, and in southwestern Pennsylvania. A number of study areas are located on the Monongahela National Forest. And in 1957 an agreement was made to cooperate in forest research with the Union Carbide-Olefins Company on their land near Charleston, West Virginia. Studies are now under way there on a 2,500-acre area known as the Blue Creek Experimental Forest. The program of research at Elkins is concerned primarily with multiple use of forest land. It stresses integrated management studies aimed toward finding practical solutions to problems of managing the timber, water, and game resources of this area. Results from these studies should provide bases for judging compatibility of uses and determining use priorities. The pages to follow present an overall view of the Elkins research program and highlight the more significant results.S3.

Book excerpt: New Advances and Contributions to Forestry Research consists of 14 chapters divided into three sections and is authored by 48 researchers from 16 countries and all five continents. Section Whither the Use of Forest Resources, authored by 16 researchers, describes negative and positive practices in forestry. Forest is a complex habitat for man, animals, insects and micro-organisms and their activities may impact positively or negatively on the forest. This complex relationship is explained in the section Forest and Organisms Interactions, consisting of contributions made by six researchers. Development of tree plantations has been man’s response to forest degradation and deforestation caused by human, animals and natural disasters. Plantations of beech, spruce, Eucalyptus and other species are described in the last section, Amelioration of Dwindling Forest Resources Through Plantation Development, a section consisting of five papers authored by 20 researchers. New Advances and Contributions to Forestry Research will appeal to forest scientists, researchers and allied professionals. It will be of interest to those who care about forest and who subscribe to the adage that the last tree dies with the last man on our planet. I recommend it to you; enjoy reading it, save the forest and save life!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Research Progress in 1972: Cooperative State Research Service A major research thrust in forest land use planning is imperative. Recreational use of forest lands is increasing at an unprecedented pace. Many of the diverse uses are becoming belligerently incompatible and research is needed on which to base management systems that permit what are not conflicting uses. Research is also urgently needed to develop acceptable alternatives to the limiting concept of pure wilderness. Carefully designed trail systems based on research results are needed to accommodate hikers, horseback riders, skiers, and a variety of off-road vehicle users. Such trails are essential both to protect forest land and to reduce conflict among users. Forest land zoning should be considered as a management tool in the location and development of winter sports areas and new mountain communities. Research programs designed to enhance the quality of the forest environment are essential. Harvesting techniques and patterns that are compatible or acceptable aesthetically must be developed. Mith additional research, we can provide texture, color, and diversity in the forest landscape, while at the same time allowing timber harvest. Mith a full implementation of multiple use, forest roads and trail systems can be designed to permit timber extraction as well as to provide recreation opportunity.
