Book excerpt: This book explores the theory of strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups of linear operators. A special feature of the text is an unusually wide range of applications such as to ordinary and partial differential operators, to delay and Volterra equations, and to control theory. Also, the book places an emphasis on philosophical motivation and the historical background.

Book excerpt: The theory of semigroups of operators was initiated by E. Hille in his monograph Functional Analysis and Semigroups'' which appeared in 1948. In the years thereafter the theory was developed further by W. Feller, T. Kato, R.S. Phillips, K. Yosida and many others. The possible range of applications is enormous and includes problems in mathematical physics, probability theory and control theory. The purpose of this book is to illustrate the richness of the theory of one-parameter semigroups by examining some of its various aspects. It is written in such a way that all three parts can be read more or less independently; it is assumed that the reader is familiar with some of the basic principles of functional analysis.

Book excerpt: Historically, complex analysis and geometrical function theory have been inten sively developed from the beginning of the twentieth century. They provide the foundations for broad areas of mathematics. In the last fifty years the theory of holomorphic mappings on complex spaces has been studied by many mathemati cians with many applications to nonlinear analysis, functional analysis, differential equations, classical and quantum mechanics. The laws of dynamics are usually presented as equations of motion which are written in the abstract form of a dy namical system: dx / dt + f ( x) = 0, where x is a variable describing the state of the system under study, and f is a vector function of x. The study of such systems when f is a monotone or an accretive (generally nonlinear) operator on the under lying space has been recently the subject of much research by analysts working on quite a variety of interesting topics, including boundary value problems, integral equations and evolution problems (see, for example, [19, 13] and [29]). In a parallel development (and even earlier) the generation theory of one parameter semigroups of holomorphic mappings in en has been the topic of interest in the theory of Markov stochastic processes and, in particular, in the theory of branching processes (see, for example, [63, 127, 48] and [69]).

Book excerpt: This book introduces the notion of an E-semigroup, a generalization of the known concept of E_O-semigroup. These objects are families of endomorphisms of a von Neumann algebra satisfying certain natural algebraic and continuity conditions. Its thorough approach is ideal for graduate students and research mathematicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide ranging but self-contained account of the spectral theory of non-self-adjoint linear operators is ideal for postgraduate students and researchers, and contains many illustrative examples and exercises. Fredholm theory, Hilbert-Schmidt and trace class operators are discussed, as are one-parameter semigroups and perturbations of their generators. Two chapters are devoted to using these tools to analyze Markov semigroups. The text also provides a thorough account of the new theory of pseudospectra, and presents the recent analysis by the author and Barry Simon of the form of the pseudospectra at the boundary of the numerical range. This was a key ingredient in the determination of properties of the zeros of certain orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Finally, two methods, both very recent, for obtaining bounds on the eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint Schrodinger operators are described. The text concludes with a description of the surprising spectral properties of the non-self-adjoint harmonic oscillator.

Book excerpt: This text consists of a sequence of problems which develop a variety of aspects in the field of semigroupsof operators. Many of the problems are not found easily in other books. Written in the Socratic/Moore method, this is a problem book without the answers presented. To get the most out of the content requires high motivation from the reader to work out the exercises. The reader is given the opportunity to discover important developments of the subject and to quickly arrive at the point of independent research. The compactness of the volume and the reputation of the author lends this consider set of problems to be a 'classic' in the making. This text is highly recommended for us as supplementary material for 3 graduate level courses.

This book was released on 1976-04-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with nonlinear semigroups of contractions in Banach spaces and their application to the existence theory for differential equa tions associated with nonlinear dissipative operators. The study of nonlinear semi groups resulted from the examination of nonlinear parabolic equations and from various nonlinear boundary value problems. The first work done by Y. Komura stimulated much further work and interest in this subject. Thus a series of studies was begun and then continued by T. Kato, M. G. Crandall, A. Pazy, H. Brezis and others, who made important con tributions to the development of the theory. The theory as developed below is a generalisation of the Hille-Yosida theory for one-parameter semigroups of linear operators and is a collection of diversified results unified more or less loosely by their methods of approach. This theory is also closely related to the theory of nonlinear monotone operators. Of course not all aspects of this theory could be covered in our expo sition, and many important contributions to the subject have been excluded for the sake of brevity. We have attempted to present the basic results to the reader and to orient him toward some of the applications. This book is intended to be self-contained. The reader is assumed to have only a basic knowledge of functional analysis, function theory and partial differential equations. Some of the necessary prerequisites for the reading of this 'book are summarized, with or without proof, in Chapter I.
