He knows she's much better off with a man to take control of her besieged castle, to say nothing of her desirable person. But it isn't long before he discovers that, although her eyes sparkle like sunlight on sea waves, her stubbornness alone could have defeated Saladin. Lady Alyss is determined to hold her family's castle, protect her people, and preserve her freedom— until her brother's dying wish binds her to a stranger. Still, she'll allow no rugged, over-confident, appealing knight to usurp her authority, even if she must wed him. Especially since he thinks a lady's duties begin and end with directing servants. Alyss has a few surprises for her new all-too-tempting lord. But when a common enemy threatens everything, Roark and Alyss face a startling revelation: Without love, neither land nor freedom matters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE BRITISH ISLES have a long tradition of tales of gods, heroes and marvels, hinting at a mythology once as relevant to the races which settled the islands as the Greek and Roman gods were to the classical world. The tales drawn together in this book, from a wide range of medieval sources, span the centuries from the dawn of Christianity to the age of the Plantagenets. The Norse gods which peopled the Anglo-Saxon past survive in Beowulf/I>; Cuchulainn, Taliesin and the magician Merlin take shape from Celtic mythology; and saints include Helena who brought a piece of the True Cross to Britain, and Joseph of Arimathea whose staff grew into the Glastonbury thorn. Tales of the British Arthur are followed by legends of later heroes, including Harold, Hereward and Godiva. These figures and many others were part of a familiar national mythology on which Shakespeare drew for Lear, Macbeth and Hamlet, creating the famous versions that are known today. Here the original stories are presented again. RICHARD BARBER's other books include King Arthur: Hero and Legend, Arthurian Legends: An Anthology, and The Knight and Chivalry; he is currently working on a study of the legend of the Holy Grail.Borders.com: England and the British Isles have a rich and still thriving tradition of myths and legends - and this wonderful volume collects together more than thirty of the best from a number of sources... an incredible insight into the fascinating yet complex history of the British Isles and its peoples... Those fascinated by mythology will want to add this wonderful book to their collections.

Book excerpt: Henry expected his older brother, William, to inherit the castle and to become the lord of Dol. However, when William dies at a young age, Henry must give up his religious studies and become a knight. He proves himself as trustworthy and intelligent and becomes a skilled knight during the First Crusade. After devastating losses, Henry struggles to live by his values and to continue to honor God. Henry must learn to recognize and embrace the gifts he possesses, many of which he doesn’t yet understand. One Knight’s Life appears to be a historical novel, but it’s much more. It’s about noticing subtle things—those which most of us take for granted—but don’t really understand. A Past-Life Regression With hindsight, I’ve concluded the reason I started writing One Knight’s Life: The Twelfth Templar when my wife asked me to drive her to Rangeley Lake to meet a woman named Kay Mora. This woman supposedly had “unusual powers” and had reportedly established her “bona fides” along these lines with the Florida State Police by helping them locate several missing persons. Not believing that sort of thing, I paid little attention. But since my wife was planning to go on a Saturday, I agreed to drive her. When we got there, we found a gray-haired old woman in a little cottage beside the lake. After introductions, I was about to look for a spot by the lake to read a book, when Kay Mora suddenly turned from Linda to me. “And what do you want me to do for you?” queried the seer in a very forceful tone. I was taken aback. I had no thought of doing anything with her. But her question was so direct that I fumbled for an answer. “I don’t know...What are my choices?” “Perhaps a past-life regression,” she replied. “And not having thought about it before was a good thing.” Based on that session, I changed my career, reestablished my values, and began to investigate near-death experiences, reincarnation, and coincidences. This book is a wonderfully historical novel. It is also one which challenges many aspects of today’s beliefs. I think you will like it. 1

Book excerpt: In this New York Times bestselling thriller, a doctor is kidnapped in the mountain wilderness after a fight with her husband -- and as the FBI closes in, she must make dangerous choices to survive. Dr. Emory Charbonneau, a pediatrician and marathon runner, disappears on a mountain road in North Carolina minutes after an argument with her husband Jeff. But by the time he reports her missing, the trail has (literally) gone cold. Fog and ice encapsulate the wilderness and freeze the search. While police suspect Jeff of "instant divorce," Emory regains consciousness only to find herself the captive of a man whose violent past is so dark he won't even tell her his name. She's willing to take any risks necessary to survive. But before she can escape, the two encounter dangerous people who adhere to their own code of justice. A desperate young woman is caught at the center of a dispute, and Emory can't bring herself to look the other way, even if it means breaking the law. Rising tension and barely restrained passion blurs the lines between right and wrong, and Emory begins to wonder if the man with no name is the one who has rescued her from death . . . and from heartbreak. Combining the nail-biting suspense and potent storytelling that has made Sandra Brown one of the world's best-loved authors, Mean Streak is a wildly compelling novel about love, deceit, and the choices we must make when our lives are on the line.

Betrayed by her father, Marsaili Campbell risks her life to recover what he has stolen from her. But when she’s kidnapped and wagered away, she has no one to help her escape other than the very man she’s spent the past three years trying to forget—Highland warrior Callum Grant. She once gave her heart and her innocence to the handsome Scot, only to regret her naive decisions. Still, with more enemies than she can battle alone, she needs an ally, even if she must hide the truth of her circumstances from him. Laird Callum Grant thrust his clan into war for the love of a woman, only to lose her forever. But when the woman he believed dead appears at his clan’s tourney in dire trouble, there’s no denying Marsaili has been alive all this time. With his clan weakened from the years of raids and battles, however, he cannot afford to do anything that would ruin the betrothal he’s made to secure his clan’s future. Yet he can’t turn away from the woman who once beguiled him body and soul. As Callum and Marsaili embark on a dangerous journey, each touch, each look, each clash of wills reignites their desire in an all-consuming inferno. But the secret Marsaili keeps and the duty that shackles Callum are threatening to destroy them. That is, unless they can learn that love, once truly given, is unbreakable.
