The education of a people is at all times a very large share of their history; and to trace the men who, and the influences which, developed, organized and operated the educational forces of a community is in a large measure to set forth the history of that section of our county, our Commonwealth and our country. James Russel Lowell says: It was in making education not only common to all, but in some sense compulsory on all, that the destiny of the free republics of America was practically settled.
