Book excerpt: Despite the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region's impressive economic growth, over 1 billion of its people still lack access to electricity and modern cooking solutions. To achieve universal access to modern energy by 2030, this book exhorts EAP countries to advance simultaneously on two paths: (1) accelerate programs for grid and off-grid electricity through appropriate policies and innovative technologies; and (2) scale up access to clean cooking fuels and efficient cooking stoves, particularly for biomass in poor rural areas.

It delves into the true purpose of life and explains the two-fold path towards attaining this purpose through the use of three inherent powers. The three powers which will assist you in achieving this goal are 1) The Power of Presence. 2) The Power of Present and 3) The Power of Pure Love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although everyone has goals, only some people successfully attain their respective goals on a regular basis. With this in mind, the author attempts to answer the question of why some people are more successful than others. He begins with the assumption that the key to personal success is effective decision-making, and then utilizes his own theory--The Self-Regulation Model--to explain the origin and nature of individual differences in decision-making competence. The author also summarizes a number of existing models of decision-making and risk-taking. This book has two primary goals: * to provide a comprehensive review of the developmental literature on the decision-making skills of children, adolescents, and adults, and * to propose a theoretical model of decision-making skill that offers a better description of this skill than prior accounts. Taken together, the literature review and theoretical model help the reader acquire a clear sense of the development of decision-making skills as well as reasons for the developmental differences that seem to emerge.

Book excerpt: YOU CANNOT DIE Everyone knows that there are two certainties in life: death and taxes. So then, why is the fear of death put into the minds of people? Why does death occur? Is it really the ‘end’ of everything, or is there a world beyond the mystical veil that we call death? You will find the answers to all these questions in Beyond Life. This book consists of a series of easy to follow conversations on the subjects of Death, and Life after Death. These are set out in an imaginary storyline between various seekers and Sirshree Tejparkhi, the eminent Founder of the Tej Gyan Foundation. Sirshree says that, “If knowledge about death and life after death makes your present life positive and beautiful, and if understanding it brings about a positive changes in your life, then you have understood the message correctly.” Beyond Life is not just for clearing doubts; it is also about changing your life completely by bringing about a total transformation – a life where you understand that you cannot truly ‘die’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Written World of God is the first systematic overview of the science of letters ('ilm al-huruf) according to the great Andalusian spiritual master, scholar, poet and philosopher Ibn 'Arabi (d. 1240). Ibn 'Arabi defined the science of letters as familiarity with the building blocks of the Quranic revelation and everything in the world of nature. Letters are understood as visual and aural signs pointing to the mysteries of existence. The present study examines how the universe came to be, for what purpose it was created and the hierarchical structure it is endowed with. It is an old story told anew - through the 28 letters of the Arabic alphabet, their orthographic forms and the meanings attributed to them, using Ibn 'Arabi's own diagrams. Although the story could be told through geometric figures or numbers, letters were chosen on the basis of Ibn 'Arabi's doctrine that the meanings carried by the letters fully encompasses the whole of existence: God and the universe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on fundamental scientific and engineering issues, this book communicates the principles of building and using knowledge systems from the conceptual standpoint as well as the practical. Previous treatments of knowledge systems have focused on applications within a particular field, or on symbol-level representations, such as the use of frame and rule representations. Introduction to Knowledge Systems presents fundamentals of symbol-level representations including representations for time, space, uncertainty, and vagueness. It also compares the knowledge-level organizations for three common knowledge-intensive tasks: classification, configuration, and diagnosis. The art of building knowledge systems incorporates computer science theory, programming practice, and psychology. The scope of this book is appropriately broad, ranging from the design of hierarchical search algorithms to techniques for acquiring the task-specific knowledge needed for successful applications. Each chapter proceeds from concepts to applications, and closes with a brief tour of current research topics and open issues. Readers will come away with a solid foundation that will enable them to create real-world knowledge systems using whatever tools and programming languages are most current and appropriate.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important textbook on artificial intelligence that uses the unifying thread of search to bring together most of the major techniques used in symbolic artificial intelligence. The authors, aware of the pitfalls of being too general or too academic, have taken a practical approach in that they include program code to illustrate their ideas. Furthermore, code is offered in both POP-11 and Prolog, thereby giving a dual perspective, highlighting the merits of these languages. Each chapter covers one technique and divides up into three sections: a section which introduces the technique (and its usual applications) andsuggests how it can be understood as a variant/generalisation of search; a section which developed a `low'-level (POP-11) implementation; a section which develops a high-level (Prolog) implementation of the technique. The authors also include useful notes on alternative treatments to the material, further reading and exercises. As a practical book it will be welcomed by a wide audience including, those already experienced in AI, students with some background in programming who are taking an introductory course in AI, and lecturers looking for a precise, professional and practical text book to use in their AI courses. About the authors: Dr Christopher Thornton has a BA in Economics, an Sc in Computer Science and a DPhil in Artificial Intelligence. Formerly a lecturer in the Department of AI at the University of Edinburgh, he is now a lecturer in AI in the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences at the University of Sussex. Professor Benedict du Boulay has a BSc in Physics and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence. Previously a lecturer in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Aberdeen he is currently Professor of Artificial Intelligence, also in the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences, University of Sussex.

Experts apply a critical eye to the United Nations' Sustainable Development agenda, also known as the Global Goals, which will affect the flow of $2.5 trillion of development aid up until 2030. Renowned economists, led by Bjorn Lomborg, determine what pursuing different targets will cost and achieve in social, environmental and economic benefits. There are 169 targets, covering every area of international development – from health to education, sanitation to conflict. Together, these analyses make the case for prioritizing the most effective development investments. A panel of Nobel Laureate economists identify a set of 19 phenomenal development targets, and argue that this would achieve as much as quadrupling the global aid budget.
