Book excerpt: Digital human modeling (DHM) is an active field of research directed towards the goal of creating detailed digital models of the human body and its functions, as well as assessment methods for evaluating human interaction with products and production systems. These have many applications in ergonomics, design and engineering, in fields as diverse as the automotive industry and medicine. This book presents the proceedings of the 6th International Digital Human Modeling Symposium (DHM2020), held in Skövde, Sweden from 31 August to 2 September 2020. The conference was also accessible online for those unable to attend in person because of restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The symposium provides an international forum for researchers, developers and users to report their latest innovations, summarize new developments and experiences within the field, and exchange ideas, results and visions in all areas of DHM research and applications. The book contains the 43 papers accepted for presentation at the conference, and is divided into 6 sections which broadly reflect the topics covered: anthropometry; behavior and biomechanical modeling; human motion data collection and modeling; human-product interaction modeling; industry and user perspectives; and production planning and ergonomics evaluation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a comprehensive collection of the European Language Equality (ELE) project’s results, its strategic agenda and roadmap with key recommendations to the European Union on how to achieve digital language equality in Europe by 2030. The fabric of the EU linguistic landscape comprises 24 official languages and over 60 regional and minority languages. However, language barriers still hamper communication and the free flow of information. Multilingualism is a key cultural cornerstone of Europe, signifying what it means to be and to feel European. Various studies and resolutions have found a striking imbalance in the support of Europe’s languages through technologies, issuing a call to action. Following an introduction, the book is divided into two parts. The first part describes the state of the art of language technology and language-centric AI and the definition and metrics developed to measure digital language equality. It also presents the status quo in 2022/2023, i.e., the current level of technology support for over 30 European languages. The second part describes plans and recommendations on how to bring about digital language equality in Europe by 2030. It includes chapters on the setup and results of the community consultation process, four technical deep dives, an overview of existing strategic documents and an abridged version of the strategic agenda and roadmap. The recommendations have been prepared jointly with the European community in the fields of language technology, natural language processing, and language-centric AI, as well as with representatives of relevant initiatives and associations, language communities and regional and minority language groups. Ensuring appropriate technology support for all European languages will not only create jobs, growth and opportunities in the digital single market. Overcoming language barriers in the digital environment is also essential for an inclusive society and for providing unity in diversity for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on methods that are unsupervised or require minimal supervision—vital in the low-resource domain. Over the past few years, rapid growth in Internet access across the globe has resulted in an explosion in user-generated text content in social media platforms. This effect is significantly pronounced in linguistically diverse areas of the world like South Asia, where over 400 million people regularly access social media platforms. YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter report a monthly active user base in excess of 200 million from this region. Natural language processing (NLP) research and publicly available resources such as models and corpora prioritize Web content authored primarily by a Western user base. Such content is authored in English by a user base fluent in the language and can be processed by a broad range of off-the-shelf NLP tools. In contrast, text from linguistically diverse regions features high levels of multilinguality, code-switching, and varied language skill levels. Resources like corpora and models are also scarce. Due to these factors, newer methods are needed to process such text. This book is designed for NLP practitioners well versed in recent advances in the field but unfamiliar with the landscape of low-resource multilingual NLP. The contents of this book introduce the various challenges associated with social media content, quantify these issues, and provide solutions and intuition. When possible, the methods discussed are evaluated on real-world social media data sets to emphasize their robustness to the noisy nature of the social media environment. On completion of the book, the reader will be well-versed with the complexity of text-mining in multilingual, low-resource environments; will be aware of a broad set of off-the-shelf tools that can be applied to various problems; and will be able to conduct sophisticated analyses of such text.

Book excerpt: This book reports a set of novel research initiatives on ambient intelligence and ubiquitous computing that help researchers and practitioners identify recent advances, as well as the frontiers in these study domains. During the last two decades, both study areas have gained great interest in industry and academia due to the benefits of using smart solutions in various application domains, such as health care, ambient-assisted living, personal security and privacy, citizen participation, provision of urban services, and precision agriculture and farming. The articles included in this book report solutions and provide empirical results on their suitability to address problems and opportunities in these application domains. The articles also include discussions on how the proposals and their evaluation results inform the design of the next generation of ubiquitous and smart systems. Researchers, practitioners, and graduate students take advantage of this knowledge to address innovation and engineering aspects of smart and ubiquitous solutions for the next decade.
