Book excerpt: Corrosion fatigue is a generic term that is used to describe the phenomenon of cracking (including environment-enhanced fatigue crack growth) in materials under the combined actions of an applied cyclic stress and a corrosive (aggressive) environment. Quantitative characterization and understanding have been hampered by the complexity of the problem, difficulties in separating the effects associated with crack initiation and crack growth, and by the absence of a truly interdisciplinary attack of the problem. With the development of fracture mechanics technology and sophisticated techniques such as Auger electron spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction analysis, quantification of environment-enhanced fatigue crack growth has now been placed on a reasonably firm basis in terms of both steady-state and transient responses. Understanding of the chemical processes that control environment-enhanced fatigue crack growth is beginning to emerge from coordinated mechanical, metallurgical, and chemical studies. A fundamental approach that underlies these studies and recent progress using this approach are described. Areas and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Corrosion fatigue (CF) is a generic term that is used to describe the phenomenon of cracking (including environment enhanced fatigue crack growth) in materials under the conjoint actions of an applied cyclic stress and a corrosive (aggressive) environment. It has been recognized as an important cause for failure of engineering structures. Characterization and understanding of corrosion fatigue are essential to service life prediction, fracture control, and the development of fatigue resistant alloys. Quantitative characterization and understanding have been hampered by the complexity of the problem, difficulties in separating the effects associated with crack initiation and with crack growth, and the absence of truly interdisciplinary attack of this problem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current state of understanding of the phenomenology and mechanism(s) for corrosion fatigue of high-strength steels is reviewed. Particular attention is directed towards corrosion fatigue in hydrogen and in water/water vapor environments. Available experimental data indicate that fatigue crack growth in high-strength steels is influenced by loading variables, such as frequency, stress ratio and waveform in regions above and below KIscc. The influences of these variables are directly attributed to interactions with the external chemical environment. Possible synergistic interactions and their relation to chemical reaction kinetics are indicated. Pertinent information on oxygen-metal and water-metal reactions is summarized. Initial results from a coordinated program of study for determining the water-metal reaction kinetics and the kinetics of crack growth on a single high-strength steel are discussed. (Author Modified Abstract).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent fracture mechanics and surface chemistry based studies have contributed to further understanding of environment assisted fatigue crack growth in high-strength alloys. For highly reactive alloy-environment systems, cracking response may depend also on the rate of transport of the aggressive environment to the crack tip. For gaseous environments, a formal basis for estimating pressure and frequency dependence has been developed. The framework and approach are expected to be applicable to other aggressive environments (such as, aqueous environments), and should provide a basis for the development of appropriate material evaluation and life prediction procedures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of mechanical structures with improved and predictable durability cannot be achieved without a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of fatigue damage and more specifically the relationships between the microstructure of materials and their fatigue properties. Written by leading experts in the field, this book (which is complementary to Fatigue of Materials and Structures: Application to Damage and Design, also edited by Claude Bathias and André Pineau), provides an authoritative, comprehensive and unified treatment of the mechanics and micromechanisms of fatigue in metals, polymers and composites. Each chapter is devoted to one of the major classes of materials or to different types of fatigue damage, thereby providing overall coverage of the field. The book deals with crack initiation, crack growth, low-cycle fatigue, gigacycle fatigue, shorts cracks, fatigue micromechanisms and the local approach to fatigue damage, corrosion fatigue, environmental effects and variable amplitude loadings, and will be an important and much used reference for students, practicing engineers and researchers studying fracture and fatigue in numerous areas of mechanical, structural, civil, design, nuclear, and aerospace engineering as well as materials science.
