Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a true Christian? What is the church? Though these are fundamental questions they often go unanswered in our current evangelical context. Far too many pastors and thinkers celebrate the trappings of faith and the mere benefits of Christianity, ignoring the biblical testimony on true conversion that shouts from countless texts from Scripture. This has fed an age-old problem: nominal Christianity. Though Edwards is sometimes presented as a scourge, a mean-hearted parson who lived to belt out thunderous damnations, a careful study of the historical record and of Edwards’ writings shows that he was in fact a Christian man devoted to the cultivation of true and saving faith in a spiritually fickle people he tenaciously loved. The problem of noncommittal Christianity did not end with Edwards. It not only survives but thrives in the current day. In studying it then, we are studying ourselves. We see that nominal Christianity, a considerable challenge today, has historic roots. We need not face this problem alone, growing more discouraged by the day, flailing as we try method after method to address the problem. Instead, we can find solace, instruction, and encouragement from the biblically saturated life and ministry of Jonathan Edwards. Easily accessible and readable, you do not need to be a scholar to enjoy these insights about Jonathan Edwards and his writings.

Book excerpt: What is true Christianity? There is perhaps no better person in recent history to answer this question than Charles Finney. Finney (1792-1875) was the most powerful Christian preacher of the 1800s who sought to clearly articulate what the Scriptures say about living the true Christian life that pleases God. He fearlessly challenged his hearers to bring every aspect of their lives into obedience to God. This book contains sixteen messages of Finney that describe the essential practice of Christianity. Each message will challenge your faith in a deep way and call you to the life that God intends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although not well-known in the English-speaking world, Fr. Ambroise Gardeil, OP (1859-1931) was a Dominican of significant influence in French Catholic thought at the turn of the 20th century. Conservative theologians like Frs. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, OP, Michel Labourdette, OP, Jean-Hervé Nicolas, OP and many others hailed him as a careful expositor of the supernaturality of faith, a defender of the theological nature of rational apologetics, and a spiritual master. The True Christian Life provides a thorough and stirring introduction to Fr. Gardeil's work in spiritual theology. The volume was originally published posthumously through the collaboration of Fr. Gardeil's nephew, Fr. Henri-Dominique Gardeil, OP and Jacques Maritain. Fr. Ambroise, prior to beginning work on his masterpiece on spiritual experience, La Structure de l'âme et l'expérience mystique, drafted nearly eight-hundred pages that would have set forth a full presentation of moral-ascetical theology. While drafting this massive work, his reflection on the soul's receptive capacity for grace led him to the two-volume study, La Structure, and he never was able to finish his original designs for a comprehensive study of the Christian moral-spiritual life. Soon after his death, his nephew gathered several essays from the Revue thomiste and Revue de Jeunes, along with a complete-but-unpublished study on prayer. Drafting a lengthy introduction on the basis of Fr. Ambroise's unpublished notes, Fr. Henri-Dominique assembled a volume of moral / spiritual theology that sets out the principles of many important themes: divinization through grace, Christian prudence /conscience, the virtue of religion, devotion, and prayer. In this volume, the reader will find a clear and rhetorically striking presentation of the central mysteries of the spiritual life, presented with stirring and beautiful rhetoric by a theological master from the Thomist tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age that grants plausibility to every idea and certainty to none... WHAT CAN YOU BELIEVE? If you've ever wandered a mall, browsed a bookstore, or explored the Internet, you've seen the evidence: We live in a culture desperately searching for meaning. Like the ancient Greeks, we are haunted by questions. Where did this world come from? Why am I here? As individuals and as a society, we are restless, longing for something, or someone, to believe in. There are perhaps millions of potential answers—but only one truth that wholly explains, resolves, and offers hope for the plight of man. Of this life-giving message, Peter, the disciple of Jesus Christ, wrote: "Even angels long to look into these things." Within these pages, author Alistair Begg explores "these things" more fully, offering fresh insights into the mystery and power of the gospel account and presenting a convincing argument to all those seeking answers to the meaning of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John William Fletcher (1729-1785) was a seminal theologian during the early Methodist movement and in the Church of England in the eighteenth century. Best known for the Checks to Antinomianism, he established a theology of history to defend the church against the encroachment of antinomianism as a polemic against hyper-Calvinism. Fletcher believed that the hyper-Calvinist system of divine fiat and finished salvation did not take seriously enough either the activity of God in salvation history or an individual believer's personal progress in salvation. Fletcher made the doctrine of accommodation a unifying principle of his theological system and further developed the doctrine of divine accommodation into a theology of ministry. As God accommodated divine revelation to the frailties of human beings, Fletcher argued that ministers of the gospel must accommodate the gospel to their hearers in order to gain a hearing for the gospel without losing the goal of true Christianity. 'True Christianity' contains insights from Fletcher, who devoted himself, according to Wesley, to being 'an altogether Christian'.

Book excerpt: True Christianity: It May Not Be What You Think seeks to define true Christianity and to help persons progress toward practicing it. The second edition includes some changes/corrections, some updated links, and seven new chapters, which makes a total of 51 chapters (in addition to the introduction). The book's introduction is followed by 51 mainly very short chapters that are subdivided into five parts. The chapters in the first part define true Christianity (also called authentic Christianity or real Christianity) and offer general guidelines for practicing it. Chapters in the second section discuss specific attitudes and beliefs. Chapters in the third segment cover specific behaviors. The fourth portion is probably the most unusual one. It discusses the relationship between Christianity and some other beliefs and practices. This fourth section includes generally very brief discussions of subjects such as atheism, agnosticism, religions other than Christianity, hypnotism, mental illness, and ESP. One chapter in this fourth part deals briefly with some of the unusual events the author has experienced or witnessed. Part five concludes the book with a brief summary/epilogue. A few chapters in the book deal much with the author's own views and/or experiences. A few cite numerous other sources to support the author's views. All chapters reflect the author's personal perspective rather than that of any particular Christian denomination or any other person. Each chapter after the introduction contains two or more sometimes provocative "Questions for Reflection and Discussion." The author hopes the book will help persons live happier, healthier, longer, more fruitful lives by coming closer to practicing true Christianity.

Book excerpt: "Are you enjoying your Christian life? Or are you exhausted with trying? Do you understand how your Christian life works? Or are you frustrated with failure? Are you interested in real Christianity? Or are you held hostage by religious tradition? The Christian life is primarily a relationship. But modern religion and our own unfounded assumptions have clouded and skewed that relationship into a system of performance-based acceptance that overlooks the dynamic, freely-offered grace of God.Many Christians are hounded by fear, guilt, and discouragement. They open the Bible and see only condemnation. They struggle with trying to be "good enough"--knowing they fail regularly. Many just give up in despair and walk away--never to enjoy the real, grace-based relationship that Jesus offers. In this compelling book, Cary Schmidt candidly and simply unpacks what real Christianity is all about. Through these pages, learn how you can embrace the grace, endure the struggle, and enjoy the relationship of truly knowing Jesus!"

Book excerpt: Foreword Review's Annual INDIEFAB Book of the Year Finalist How do we explain human consciousness? Where do we get our sense of beauty? Why do we recoil at suffering? Why do we have moral codes that none of us can meet? Why do we yearn for justice, yet seem incapable of establishing it? Any philosophy or worldview must make sense of the world as we actually experience it. We need to explain how we can discern qualities such as beauty and evil and account for our practices of morality and law. The complexity of the contemporary world is sometimes seen as an embarrassment for Christianity. But law professor David Skeel makes a fresh case for the plausibility and explanatory power of Christianity. The Christian faith offers plausible explanations for the central puzzles of our existence, such as our capacity for idea-making, our experience of beauty and suffering, and our inability to create a just social order. When compared with materialism or other sets of beliefs, Christianity provides a more comprehensive framework for understanding human life as we actually live it. We need not deny the complexities of life as we experience it. But the paradoxes of our existence can lead us to the possibility that the existence of God could make sense of it all.

Book excerpt: Presently, chaos dominates the world. People are hopeless and scared. In desperation, individuals look to politicians, intellectuals, and ideologies to save them from the fear of death. But, as reality proves, none of these things provide salvation. Therefore, Tanner was compelled to write about the one Saviour, one hope, and one path to everlasting life, Jesus Christ. Christ alone is the sacrifice for sin, he alone frees a person from death, and he alone is the eternal salvation for humanity. As such, this book is about Christ, and Christ alone, in the hope that you too, dear Reader, might receive freedom from death and become a True Christian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this exciting volume, Riley reveals that from the beginning there was not just one true Christianity, but many different Christianities. United by passionate allegiance to Jesus as Hero, these early, doctrinally diverse Christianities have led to the development of many different kinds of Christian churches among us today. Riley shows that early Christianity harbored major doctrinal differences about all aspects of Jesus' life, death, resurrection, and divinity. This book provides not only a whole new understanding of the nature of earliest Christianity, but it also conveys a vital message for today about what Christian faith is really about. Riley reveals the authentic character of Christianity as inherently pluralistic and tolerant of diverse ideas while passionately centered in Jesus.
