Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theory and numerical solution method are presented for the problem of two-dimensional unsteady transonic flow about thin airfoils undergoing harmonic oscillation. The theory is based on a treatment of the unsteady flow as a small perturbation on the non-linear steady flow. The governing equations for the steady and unsteady perturbation potentials are of mixed elliptic/hyperbolic type and are solved by the mixed differencing line relaxation technique of Murman and Cole. Detailed steady and unsteady calculations are performed and compared when possible to available experimental data. The solution procedure is found to be highly efficient and promises further improvements in efficiency through the use of extrapolation schemes. Also the method can be generalized in a straightforward manner to perform calculations with supersonic freestreams and three-dimensional finite wing calculations. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of constructing solutions for transonic flow over symmetric airfoils is treated for simplification of the mapping of the incompressible flow is emphasized. In the case of a symmetric Joukowski airfoil without circulation the mapping is relatively simple, but the coefficients in the power series are difficult to evaluate. As a means of simplification an approximate flow is used which differs only slightly from the exact incompressible one when the thickness is small. Flow with circulation is also considered by the same method.

This book was released on 1951 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental measurements of the aerodynamic reactions on a symmetrical airfoil oscillating harmonically in a two-dimensional flow are presented and analyzed in this paper. Harmonic motions include pure pitch and pure translation, for several amplitudes and superimposed on an initial angle of attack, as well as combined pitch and translation. Considerable consistent data for pure pitch were obtained from a search of available reference material, and several definite Reynolds number effects are evident.

This book was released on 1951 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of an investigation of flows around and forces on an oscillating finite wing in subsonic compressible flow, the exact double integrals occurring in the theoretical formulation of the three-dimensional nonstationary aerodynamic forces have previously been reduced to single integrals over the range of either one of the two independent variables. The present report describes a method for solving the resultant three-dimensional problem based on a generalization of approximate methods for solving two-dimensional problems. It is shown that the calculation of three-dimensional corrections to the two-dimensional integral equation for spanwise variation of circulation, provided tabulated values for the kernal of the integral equation are available.

This book was released on 1949 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present report is concerned with the problem of the oscillating airfoil of finite span, within the frame of the linearized lifting surface theory. The aim of this study is the development of a theory which incorporates simultaneously the effects of three-dimensionality of the flow and of compressibility of the fluid. As an exact solution of this problem, even within the limitations of the linearized theory, presents very great difficulties, it is worth while to work toward an approximate theory which is valid provided the aspect ratio of the lifting surface is not too small.
