Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference on Ordered Algebraic Structures held in Curat;ao, from the 26th of June through the 30th of June, 1995, at the Avila Beach Hotel, marked the eighth year of ac tivities by the Caribbean Mathematics Foundation (abbr. CMF), which was the principal sponsor of this conference. CMF was inaugurated in 1988 with a conference on Ordered Algebraic Structures. During the years between these two conferences the field has changed sufficiently, both from my point of view and, I believe, that of my co-organizer, W. Charles Holland, to make one wonder about the label "Ordered Algebraic Structures" itself. We recognized this from the start, and right away this conference carried a subtitle, or, if one prefers, an agenda: we concentrated on the one hand, on traditional themes in the theory of ordered groups, including model-theoretic aspects, and, on the other hand, on matters in which topology (more precisely C(X)-style topology) and category theory would play a prominent role. Plainly, ordered algebra has many faces, and it is becoming increas ingly difficult to organize an intimate conference, such as the ones encouraged in the series sponsored by CMF, in this area on a broad set of themes. These proceedings reflect, accurately we think, the spirit of the conferees, but it is not a faithful record of the papers presented at the conference.
Book Synopsis Nilpotent Groups and their Automorphisms by : Evgenii I. Khukhro
Download or read book Nilpotent Groups and their Automorphisms written by Evgenii I. Khukhro and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-04-20 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the series is to present new and important developments in pure and applied mathematics. Well established in the community over two decades, it offers a large library of mathematics including several important classics. The volumes supply thorough and detailed expositions of the methods and ideas essential to the topics in question. In addition, they convey their relationships to other parts of mathematics. The series is addressed to advanced readers wishing to thoroughly study the topic. Editorial Board Lev Birbrair, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, Brasil Victor P. Download or read book Stable Groups written by Bruno Poizat and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the English translation of the book originally published in 1987. It is a faithful reproduction of the original, supplemented by a new Foreword and brought up to date by a short postscript. The book gives an introduction by a specialist in contemporary mathematical logic to the model-theoretic study of groups, i.e., into what can be said about groups, and for that matter, about all the traditional algebraic objects. The author introduces the groups of finite Morley rank (those satisfying the most restrictive assumptions from the point of view of logic), and highlights their resemblance to algebraic groups, of which they are the prototypes. (All the necessary prerequisites from algebraic geometry are included in the book.) Then, whenever possible, generalizations of properties of groups of finite Morley type to broader classes of superstables and stable groups are described. The exposition in the first four chapters can be understood by mathematicians who have some knowledge of logic (model theory). The last three chapters are intended for specialists in mathematical logic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF MATHEMATICS aims to be a reference work for all parts of mathe matics. It is a translation with updates and editorial comments of the Soviet Mathematical Encyclopaedia published by 'Soviet Encyclopaedia Publishing House' in five volumes in 1977-1985. The annotated translation consists of ten volumes including a special index volume. There are three kinds of articles in this ENCYCLOPAEDIA. First of all there are survey-type articles dealing with the various main directions in mathematics (where a rather fine subdivi sion has been used). The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. On the whole, these articles should be understandable to mathematics students in their first specialization years, to graduates from other mathematical areas and, depending on the specific subject, to specialists in other domains of science, en gineers and teachers of mathematics. These articles treat their material at a fairly general level and aim to give an idea of the kind of problems, techniques and concepts involved in the area in question. They also contain background and motivation rather than precise statements of precise theorems with detailed definitions and technical details on how to carry out proofs and constructions. The second kind of article, of medium length, contains more detailed concrete problems, results and techniques.
