Download or read book On the Sensations of Tone, Vol. 8 written by Hermann L. F. Helmholtz and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On the Sensations of Tone as a Physiological Basis for the Theory of Music" is a seminal work in the field of music theory. The book deals primarily with acoustics and the human perception of sound as the basis for all musical theory. The book is divided into three major parts, detailing the scientific composition of vibrations, the interruption of harmony, and the relationship of musical tones. This is a highly technical work that deals significantly with physiological responses to sounds. The book combines text, illustrations, charts, figures, and sheet music to illustrate its point and concludes with a detailed index, allowing this volume to serve as a reference document. Helmholtz's work in "On the Sensations of Tone as a Physiological Basis for the Theory of Music" is the stuff of genius. This text has been foundational for the further study of music theory, and is still considered a must-read text by many academics. "On the Sensations of Tone as a Physiological Basis for the Theory of Music" is one of the most important works ever written on the subject of tone and music theory. Hermann Helmholtz expertly combines his knowledge of both music and physiology to create a text that remains invaluable to this day. This book is thus highly recommended for the studious and educated musician seeking to improve their theoretical knowledge base. Book Synopsis The Age of Electroacoustics by : Roland Wittje
Download or read book The Age of Electroacoustics written by Roland Wittje and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of acoustics into electro-acoustics, a field at the intersection of science and technology, guided by electrical engineering, industry, and the military. At the end of the nineteenth century, acoustics was a science of musical sounds; the musically trained ear was the ultimate reference. Just a few decades into the twentieth century, acoustics had undergone a transformation from a scientific field based on the understanding of classical music to one guided by electrical engineering, with industrial and military applications. In this book, Roland Wittje traces this transition, from the late nineteenth-century work of Hermann Helmholtz to the militarized research of World War I and media technology in the 1930s. Wittje shows that physics in the early twentieth century was not only about relativity and atomic structure but encompassed a range of experimental, applied, and industrial research fields. The emergence of technical acoustics and electroacoustics illustrates a scientific field at the intersection of science and technology. Wittje starts with Helmholtz's and Rayleigh's work and its intersection with telegraphy and early wireless, and continues with the industrialization of acoustics during World War I, when sound measurement was automated and electrical engineering and radio took over the concept of noise. Researchers no longer appealed to the musically trained ear to understand sound but to the thinking and practices of electrical engineering. Finally, Wittje covers the demilitarization of acoustics during the Weimar Republic and its remilitarization at the beginning of the Third Reich. He shows how technical acoustics fit well with the Nazi dismissal of pure science, representing everything that “German Physics” under National Socialism should be: experimental, applied, and relevant to the military.
Book Synopsis Psychology of Music by : Diana Deutsch
Download or read book Psychology of Music written by Diana Deutsch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psychology of Music draws together the diverse and scattered literature on the psychology of music. It explores the way music is processed by the listener and the performer and considers several issues that are of importance both to perceptual psychology and to contemporary music, such as the way the sound of an instrument is identified regardless of its pitch or loudness, or the types of information that can be discarded in the synthetic replication of a sound without distorting perceived timbre. Comprised of 18 chapters, this book begins with a review of the classical psychoacoustical literature on tone perception, focusing on characteristics of particular relevance to music. The attributes of pitch, loudness, and timbre are examined, and a summary of research methods in psychoacoustics is presented. Subsequent chapters deal with timbre perception; the subjective effects of different sound fields; temporal aspects of music; abstract structures formed by pitch relationships in music; different tests of musical ability; and the importance of abstract structural representation in understanding how music is performed. The final chapter evaluates the relationship between new music and psychology. This monograph should be a valuable resource for psychologists and musicians.
