Book excerpt: Excerpt from East and West: A Story of New-Born Ohio All this, I say, she knew from native impulse; but it was not very satisfactory, to have thus to construct for herself the picture of what was going on in the town. Least of all was it satisfactory that the news should have been given her by J ane Endicott. Sarah did not ask herself in what way she would have liked to have the news come, but she did know that it could not have come to her in a more disagreeable way. And at the very bottom of her heart, she had a provoked feel ing, that it was not the first time that Harry Curwen had treated her in this off-hand and take-for-granted way. From it grew the majestic group of States now lying at the heart of the Republic. The famous ordinance of 1787, by which the Northwest Territory was established, and dedicated to freedom, and which is not extravagantly described as one of the three title deeds of American constitutional liberty, was first expounded and applied by the pioneers of Ohio, who guarded its honor with zealous patriotism, cherishing the covenant as a guarantee of political progress and moral success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Cousins in Ohio The little book which I promised as a companion volume to the Children's Year, I now present to the public; and in so doing, I would express my grateful sense of the kind and flattering manner in which that little work, an experiment in chil dren's books, has been received. Here then is another book which is entirely true; and if it interests the child and satisfies the parent so much the better. To me its compilation has been a work of pleasure mingled with deep sorrow. It is the twelvemonths' chronicle of the domestic life of a beloved Sister, far removed by distance, and whom it has pleased a good Providence, since then, to remove by death. The days at The Cedars, made joyous by the presence of that affectionate and wise mother, are now over for ever. This volume contains the brief record of her last Christmas on earth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to the Ladies of Ohio We cannot away with the ferocious spirit of presumtuous superiority, in which sentiments so degrading to the dignity, and so libellous upon the influence of woman, originate. We must ever rebuke that selfish exclusiveness, which - arrogating to man the peculiar endowments of intellect and heart - designates every exercise of the same on the part of woman, as impertinent and assuming; which frowns upon her noble efforts to elevate and happily the world, and strives, by ridicule, inuendoes, taunts and abuse, to re-plunge her into the insignificancy in which Despotism has always held her. We have no sympathy with such sentiments - no congeniality with such a spirit. The former are as far from the dictates of humanity and the councils of courtesy, as is the latter from the genius of christianity and the spirit of liberty. In utter opposition to these monstrous and oppressive views, we hold that it is 'the chief end' of woman as well as 'of man to glorify God' - that it is her duty to contribute to the general happiness of mankind - that she is bound to be active in furthering every moral enterprize which promotes the common welfare - that it is her duty, therefore, to inquire into the merits of every such cause, which is before the public mind. Here is woman's sphere! Her duties consist no more of domestic cares, than man's duties consist of his merchandize, his professional, mechanical, and other business pursuits. These all are but parts of that humble machinery which supports our humble bodies. There are more worthy cares, more elevating employments, more ennobling duties, growing out of our sublime relations to God and our fellow-man, and also springing up from our own immortality, which should enlist the energies of both woman and man. To deny these responsibilities to woman, while we impose, with scrupulous exactness, domestic duties, - is to sacrifice the rational to the animal part of woman. And furthermore: as the pursuit of these high duties comprises the peculiar happiness of intelligent beings, consequently, the act which cuts off one half of the rational creation from participating in these duties, dries up all the springs of their rational enjoyments. Whether this injustice has not been virtually perpetrated upon woman, is a question of solemn import. That it is committed in those countries where woman is made a drudge, no one doubts; and we would submit - whether it is not as effectually, if not so grossly, perpetrated in our country, by that odious sentiment which makes her a painted puppet or a gilded butterfly? Flaming rock is on the easterly side of Smoky Creek, one of the many beautiful streams of the wilder and more picturesque parts of Southern Ohio. The rock rises precipitously to a height of more than two hundred feet from the level of the pool at its base. It is of bituminous slate, so abundant in combustible matter that one day it took fire near the bottom, and continued to burn until a freshet came to put out the flames, six months afterward: whence come the names of Flaming Rock and Smoky Creek. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Broad Aisle: A Realistic Tale of Early Ohio Seventy years ago in the village of Richfield, Ohio, flourished close upon the boundaries of the settled West. Sheltered from the world by low fertile hills, the early inhabitants, sons and daughters of the old country, led simple, God-fearing lives. Scotch-Irish thrift and Calvinistic theology alone regulated conduct. In the days of the Territory outlying farms spread sparsely from between uncleared forests. Later log cabins gave place to square houses of two stories and square-steepled churches. Even then sobriety governed the town, and suppressed the possibilities of architecture. A front porch never adorned a Richfield homestead. Carnal abominations were scorned in the deeply religious, conservative neighborhood. When a great national highway marked the importance of a rival village, with rolling stagecoaches arid dashing leaders, no jealous pangs were felt in little Richfield. Years hence when railroads avoided the hamlet, to cross and recross the Buckeye State in almost every other locality, the contented town'sfolk sang psalms, and continued to denounce musical instruments, and to wrangle over the zoological monsters of Revelation.
