Book Synopsis Random Graph Dynamics by : Rick Durrett
Download or read book Random Graph Dynamics written by Rick Durrett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of random graphs began in the late 1950s in several papers by Erdos and Renyi. In the late twentieth century, the notion of six degrees of separation, meaning that any two people on the planet can be connected by a short chain of people who know each other, inspired Strogatz and Watts to define the small world random graph in which each site is connected to k close neighbors, but also has long-range connections. At a similar time, it was observed in human social and sexual networks and on the Internet that the number of neighbors of an individual or computer has a power law distribution. This inspired Barabasi and Albert to define the preferential attachment model, which has these properties. These two papers have led to an explosion of research. The purpose of this book is to use a wide variety of mathematical argument to obtain insights into the properties of these graphs. A unique feature is the interest in the dynamics of process taking place on the graph in addition to their geometric properties, such as connectedness and diameter.
Book Synopsis Random Graphs and Complex Networks: Volume 2 by : Remco van der Hofstad
Download or read book Random Graphs and Complex Networks: Volume 2 written by Remco van der Hofstad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex networks are key to describing the connected nature of the society that we live in. This book, the second of two volumes, describes the local structure of random graph models for real-world networks and determines when these models have a giant component and when they are small-, and ultra-small, worlds. This is the first book to cover the theory and implications of local convergence, a crucial technique in the analysis of sparse random graphs. Suitable as a resource for researchers and PhD-level courses, it uses examples of real-world networks, such as the Internet and citation networks, as motivation for the models that are discussed, and includes exercises at the end of each chapter to develop intuition. The book closes with an extensive discussion of related models and problems that demonstratemodern approaches to network theory, such as community structure and directed models.
Download or read book Random Graphs written by Svante Janson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unified, modern treatment of the theory of random graphs-including recent results and techniques Since its inception in the 1960s, the theory of random graphs has evolved into a dynamic branch of discrete mathematics. Yet despite the lively activity and important applications, the last comprehensive volume on the subject is Bollobas's well-known 1985 book. Poised to stimulate research for years to come, this new work covers developments of the last decade, providing a much-needed, modern overview of this fast-growing area of combinatorics. Written by three highly respected members of the discrete mathematics community, the book incorporates many disparate results from across the literature, including results obtained by the authors and some completely new results. Current tools and techniques are also thoroughly emphasized. Clear, easily accessible presentations make Random Graphs an ideal introduction for newcomers to the field and an excellent reference for scientists interested in discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science. Special features include: * A focus on the fundamental theory as well as basic models of random graphs * A detailed description of the phase transition phenomenon * Easy-to-apply exponential inequalities for large deviation bounds * An extensive study of the problem of containing small subgraphs * Results by Bollobas and others on the chromatic number of random graphs * The result by Robinson and Wormald on the existence of Hamilton cycles in random regular graphs * A gentle introduction to the zero-one laws * Ample exercises, figures, and bibliographic references

Book Synopsis Large Deviations for Random Graphs by : Sourav Chatterjee
Download or read book Large Deviations for Random Graphs written by Sourav Chatterjee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the emerging body of literature on the study of rare events in random graphs and networks. For example, what does a random graph look like if by chance it has far more triangles than expected? Until recently, probability theory offered no tools to help answer such questions. Important advances have been made in the last few years, employing tools from the newly developed theory of graph limits. This work represents the first book-length treatment of this area, while also exploring the related area of exponential random graphs. All required results from analysis, combinatorics, graph theory and classical large deviations theory are developed from scratch, making the text self-contained and doing away with the need to look up external references. Further, the book is written in a format and style that are accessible for beginning graduate students in mathematics and statistics.
Book Synopsis Some Large Deviation Results for Sparse Random Graphs by : Neil O'Connell
Download or read book Some Large Deviation Results for Sparse Random Graphs written by Neil O'Connell and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "We obtain a large deviation principle (LDP) for the relative size of the largest connected component in a random graph with small edge probability. The rate function, which is not convex in general, is determined explicitly using a new technique. As a corollary we present an asymptotic formula for the probability that the random graph is connected. We also present an LDP and related result for the number of isolated vertices. Here we make use of a simple but apparently unknown characterisation, wheich is obtained by embedding the random graph in a random directed graph. The results demonstrate that, at this scaling, the properties 'connected' and 'contains no isolated vertices' are not asymptotically equivalent. (At the threshold probability they are asymptotically equivalent.)."

Book excerpt: Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 24. Chapters: Barabasi-Albert model, Erd s-Renyi model, Giant component, Loop-erased random walk, Maze generation algorithm, Percolation critical exponents, Percolation threshold, Rado graph, Random geometric graph, Random graph, Random regular graph, Watts and Strogatz model. Excerpt: Percolation threshold is a mathematical term related to percolation theory, which is the formation of long-range connectivity in random systems. Below the threshold a giant connected component does not exist; while above it, there exists a giant component of the order of system size. In engineering and coffee making, percolation represents the flow of fluids through porous media, but in the mathematics and physics worlds it generally refers to simplified lattice models of random systems or networks (graphs), and the nature of the connectivity in them. The percolation threshold is the critical value of the occupation probability p, or more generally a critical surface for a group of parameters p1, p2, ..., such that infinite connectivity (percolation) first occurs. The most common percolation model is to take a regular lattice, like a square lattice, and make it into a random network by randomly "occupying" sites (vertices) or bonds (edges) with a statistically independent probability p. At a critical threshold pc, large clusters and long-range connectivity first appears, and this is called the percolation threshold. Depending on the method for obtaining the random network, one distinguishes between the site percolation threshold and the bond percolation threshold. More general systems have several probabilities p1, p2, etc., and the transition is characterized by a critical surface or manifold. One can also consider continuum systems, such as overlapping disks and spheres placed randomly, or the negative space (Swiss-cheese models). In the...
Book Synopsis Random Geometric Graphs by : Mathew Penrose
Download or read book Random Geometric Graphs written by Mathew Penrose and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph sets out a body of mathematical theory for finite graphs with nodes placed randomly in Euclidean space and edges added to connect points that are close to each other. As an alternative to classical random graph models, these geometric graphs are relevant to the modelling of real-world networks having spatial content, arising in numerous applications such as wireless communications, parallel processing, classification, epidemiology, astronomy, and the internet. Aimed at graduate students and researchers in probability, combinatorics, statistics, and theoretical computer science, it covers topics such as edge and component counts, vertex degrees, cliques, colourings, connectivity, giant component phenomena, vertex ordering and partitioning problems. It also illustrates and extends the application to geometric probability of modern techniques including Stein's method, martingale methods and continuum percolation.

Download or read book Erdös Centennial written by László Lovász and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Erdös was one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century, whose work in number theory, combinatorics, set theory, analysis, and other branches of mathematics has determined the development of large areas of these fields. In 1999, a conference was organized to survey his work, his contributions to mathematics, and the far-reaching impact of his work on many branches of mathematics. On the 100th anniversary of his birth, this volume undertakes the almost impossible task to describe the ways in which problems raised by him and topics initiated by him (indeed, whole branches of mathematics) continue to flourish. Written by outstanding researchers in these areas, these papers include extensive surveys of classical results as well as of new developments.
