Book excerpt: Gene-editing is a relatively new advancement in biotechnology that has been identified to have promising applications, especially in providing solutions for major agricultural challenges such as citrus greening. CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats), which is the most popular form of gene editing, has been identified as a potential pathway to breed citrus greening resistance into citrus plants. However, the issue of consumer aversion to biotechnology could hinder the success of this technology, and other beneficial biotechnology applications to agriculture. Thus, this dissertation aims to investigate consumer acceptance of food biotechnology, focusing on the influence of psychological/behavioral traits, information framing, and misinformation. In the first study, we conducted an online survey of U.S orange juice consumers to explore the influence of risk preferences, risk perceptions, time preference and ambiguity tolerance on willingness to pay for gene edited orange juice. The second study also uses an online survey to examine the influence of positive and negative information framing on willingness to pay for gene edited orange juice. The third study investigates the effectiveness of misinformation strategies in combating biotechnology misperceptions. The findings from this dissertation will be useful to inform marketing campaigns by stakeholders in the food biotechnology industry.
