But it, is far from being proved that this quesnon had more than a partial bearing upon the cause of the commotion. The insar rection was far from being general, and appears to have only taken place on a few estates. What may be the result of farther evidence it would be premature to say. In the mean time the accounts already received contain nothing which renders it necessary to assume that the whole mischief did not originate in a revolt of Mr. Scott's negroes against their immediate masters or managers, excited by some local and peculiar cause; and which in its progress may possibly have been aggravated by the impressions the negroes may have received from the intemperate representations of their masters respecting the tendency of the Registry Bill. From his earliest years he felt a hatred to oppression: his love of liberty, civil and religious, "grew with his growth and strengthened with his strength." He no sooner heard of slavery in the British dominions, and the miseries necessarily attendant on such a state, than he deeply deplored the case of the injured Negro. He was too young to take any part in the great struggle for the abolition of the slave trade, though he sincerely rejoiced in that great triumph of humanity. Since 1823, however, he has taken a more lively interest in the subject; and towards the close of the last year, by means of the information which was laid before the public from time to time, his mind became so strongly impressed with the subject, that it followed him night and day: he felt that, for the peace of his own mind, he must make some attempt on behalf of his suffering fellow-creatures; it became a point of conscience. In perusing these statements of that great philanthropist and friend of the injured African race, his feelings became, in some measure, enlisted in favor of the colored people of our land, and in opposition to the slavery upheld by our nation. He was never sensible of feeling the prejudice against color, so often manifested; but, in his intercourse with colored persons, treated them, as he would others. And having them for many years as neighbors, and, not unfrequently, as hired help, they were admitted to eat with the family at the same table. In 1824 he was invited to attend a political celebration on the 4th of July. In declining the invitation, he noticed the inconsistency of our conduct in celebrating our liberty, founded upon the principle that all men are created free and equal, and proclaiming this "self-evident truth," and yet holding hundreds of thousands of our fellow men in degrading bondage. The next year, he was requested to preach on the 4th of July. The sermon was, by request, printed. The following extract will show the writer's views respecting American slavery. A father may be ﬂogged for teaching his own child to read the Bible.* Religious assemblies of Slaves are illegal; they may be broken up, and the negroes ﬂogged without trial for being present. The law affords no protection to the marriage of Slaves; masters may at any time enforce a separation between husband and wife. If a free coloured man enter a Southern port on ship board, he is liable to be taken to prison and kept there until the ship sails away; and if the cap tain should fail to pay the expences incurred by his detention, the coloured man is liable to be sold to perpetual Slavery. As sisting Slaves to escape is an offence visited with severe penalties, such as long imprisonment, heavy fines, branding with a hot iron, the pillory, and even death. In Mississippi Slaves are punished capitally for thirty different crimes, all of which in the case of whites are visited only with fine and imprisonment; eight of them, if committed by whites, are not punishable at all. All the Slave States allow the life of a fugitive Slave to be taken, if his escape cannot otherwise be prevented. A Slave, refusing to submit to the lash, may be legally shot. If a Slave be killed by cruel whipping, the master is liable to a fine, or to imprisonment for six months; but as Slave testi mony is not received in evidence, the commission of the offence cannot be proved against masters, if none but negroes were present at the time. However injured a Slave may be by per sonal violence, he cannot prosecute his master, or any one else, for damages.
