Download or read book The Spiral After-Effect written by Harry C. Holland and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spiral After-Effect presents the visual phenomenon of the spiral after-effect in clinical investigations. This book explains how and under what conditions the illusion happens or can be modified. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the features of illusion that are similar to many of the characteristics of other movement perceptions, including vividness, velocity, and persistence. This text then examines the complex structure and the geometric function of the inducing stimulus. Other chapters consider the effects of drugs on the spiral illusion, which is rather strange when one considers the wide use of the phenomenon in patient groups who may be receiving substantial admixtures of compound for therapeutic purposes. This book discusses as well the relationship between intelligence and perception of the spiral after-effect. The final chapter deals with the conditioned after-effect. Clinical psychologists and readers who are interested in personality research will find this book useful.

Book Synopsis Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options by : James M. Vose
Download or read book Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options written by James M. Vose and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest land managers face the challenges of preparing their forests for the impacts of climate change. However, climate change adds a new dimension to the task of developing and testing science-based management options to deal with the effects of stressors on forest ecosystems in the southern United States. The large spatial scale and complex interactions make traditional experimental approaches difficult. Yet, the current progression of climate change science offers new insights from recent syntheses, models, and experiments, providing enough information to start planning now for a future that will likely include an increase in disturbances and rapid changes in forest conditions. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Management Options: A Guide for Natural Resource Managers in Southern Forest Ecosystems provides a comprehensive analysis of forest management options to guide natural resource management in the face of future climate change. Topics include potential climate change impacts on wildfire, insects, diseases, and invasives, and how these in turn might affect the values of southern forests that include timber, fiber, and carbon; water quality and quantity; species and habitats; and recreation. The book also considers southern forest carbon sequestration, vulnerability to biological threats, and migration of native tree populations due to climate change. This book utilizes the most relevant science and brings together science experts and land managers from various disciplines and regions throughout the south to combine science, models, and on-the-ground experience to develop management options. Providing a link between current management actions and future management options that would anticipate a changing climate, the authors hope to ensure a broader range of options for managing southern forests and protecting their values in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the origins of the Angolan civil war of 1975-76. By looking at the interaction between internal and external factors, it reveals the domestic roots of the conflict and the impact of foreign intervention on the civil war. The formative influence of colonialism and anti-colonialism on the emergence of Angolan rivalry since 1961 is described, and the externalization of that power struggle is analysed from a perspective of both international and domestic politics.

Book Synopsis Double-Gyroid-Structured Functional Materials by : Maik Rudolf Johann Scherer
Download or read book Double-Gyroid-Structured Functional Materials written by Maik Rudolf Johann Scherer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new high-tech applications and devices has created a seemingly insatiable demand for novel functional materials with enhanced and tailored properties. Such materials can be achieved by three-dimensional structuring on the nanoscale, giving rise to a significant enhancement of particular functional characteristics which stems from the ability to access both surface/interface and bulk properties. The highly ordered, bicontinuous double-gyroid morphology is a fascinating and particularly suitable 3D nanostructure for this purpose due to its highly accessible surface area, connectivity, narrow pore diameter distribution and superb structural stability. The presented study encompasses a wide range of modern nanotechnology techniques in a highly versatile bottom-up nanopatterning strategy that splits the fabrication process into two successive steps: the preparation of mesoporous double-gyroid templates utilizing diblock copolymer self-assembly, and their replication with a functional material employing electrochemical deposition and atomic layer deposition. The double-gyroid structured materials discussed include metals, metal oxides, and conjugated polymers, which are applied and characterized in high-performance devices, such as electrochromic displays, supercapacitors, chemical sensors and photovoltaics. This publication addresses a wide range of readers, from researchers and specialists who are professionally active in the field, to more general readers interested in chemistry, nanoscience and physics.
Book Synopsis Political Participation in the Digital Age by : Julia Tiemann-Kollipost
Download or read book Political Participation in the Digital Age written by Julia Tiemann-Kollipost and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2020-02-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the potential of the Internet for enabling new and flexible political participation modes. It meticulously illustrates how the Internet is responsible for citizens' participation practices from being general, high-threshold, temporally constricted, and dependent on physical presence to being topic-centered, low-threshold, temporally discontinuous, and independent from physical presence. With its ethnographic focus on Icelandic and German online participation tools Betri Reykjavík and LiquidFriesland, the book offers plentiful advice for citizens, programmers, politicians, and administrations alike on how to get the most out of online participation formats.
