Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legendary commentator recounts his adventuresome life in the ever-changing world of sport broadcasting in this lively memoir: “I couldn’t put it down” (John McEnroe). Tim Ryan is no doubt the only sportscaster who has crash-landed in the Namib desert, been charged by a rhino in Zimbabwe, herded sheep at the beginning of a Winter Olympics telecast, and dodged flying bottles at a professional boxing match. In his new memoir, Ryan recounts all of these tales and more in the personable, trustworthy voice that sports fans will recognize from his countless television appearances. Armchair travelers and sports enthusiasts alike will be taken on a riveting journey as Ryan shares anecdotes from his adventures in broadcasting that span thirty sports in more than twenty countries over fifty years. And while the events themselves are impressive—ten Olympic Games, more than three hundred championship boxing matches, Wimbledon and US Open tennis, World Cup Skiing, just to name a few—it’s the lesser-known stories that happened along the way that really stand out in Ryan’s telling. As he details how he came to call the first Ali-Frazier fight for the Armed Forces Network, or hosted a tennis tournament featuring the McEnroe brothers to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association, Ryan shines a light on sports and the world beyond sports—the world of family, friends, colleagues, and connections that endure when the game has been won and the mic turned off.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling work of undercover reportage from our sharpest and most original social critic, with a new foreword by Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted Millions of Americans work full time, year round, for poverty-level wages. In 1998, Barbara Ehrenreich decided to join them. She was inspired in part by the rhetoric surrounding welfare reform, which promised that a job—any job—can be the ticket to a better life. But how does anyone survive, let alone prosper, on $6 an hour? To find out, Ehrenreich left her home, took the cheapest lodgings she could find, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered. Moving from Florida to Maine to Minnesota, she worked as a waitress, a hotel maid, a cleaning woman, a nursing-home aide, and a Wal-Mart sales clerk. She lived in trailer parks and crumbling residential motels. Very quickly, she discovered that no job is truly "unskilled," that even the lowliest occupations require exhausting mental and muscular effort. She also learned that one job is not enough; you need at least two if you int to live indoors. Nickel and Dimed reveals low-rent America in all its tenacity, anxiety, and surprising generosity—a land of Big Boxes, fast food, and a thousand desperate stratagems for survival. Read it for the smoldering clarity of Ehrenreich's perspective and for a rare view of how "prosperity" looks from the bottom. And now, in a new foreword, Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, explains why, twenty years on in America, Nickel and Dimed is more relevant than ever.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • In this Pulitzer Prize-winning follow-up to The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys unjustly sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble. As life at the Academy becomes ever more perilous, the tension between Elwood’s ideals and Turner’s skepticism leads to a decision whose repercussions will echo down the decades. Based on the real story of a reform school that operated for 111 years and warped the lives of thousands of children, The Nickel Boys is a devastating, driven narrative that showcases a great American novelist writing at the height of his powers and “should further cement Whitehead as one of his generation's best" (Entertainment Weekly). Look for Colson Whitehead’s bestselling new novel, Harlem Shuffle!

Sample Book Insights: #1 Good investors have a monk-like devotion to their field. They do not live by testosterone or adrenaline, but by study, learn, and practice. They do not make decisions based on urgency, but on a patient incremental approach. #2 The reversion to the mean framework is a mathematical term for the simple idea that life eventually returns to normal. It states that nothing essential changes in the world’s economy, and that if stocks are cheap relative to their profits, they will eventually return to a normal, lower valuation. #3 I was a junior oil and gas analyst at Bernstein, and I fed data about the companies I covered into the black box computer model. In the late twentieth century, everything returned to normal, which generated large gains for the firm and its clients. #4 I had begun to feel that the market had finished weighing my stocks and found them wanting. The companies I owned shared two characteristics: they were all cheap stocks, and historically that had been a good quality. But all of them likely had their best days behind them.

Book excerpt: This book holds top secrets on how you can build real wealth and explains in accessible terms: The Mindset of Wealth Power Earning Investing in Real Estate Family Development Mastery “Wealth isn’t about money. All my adult life, people have asked me, ‘Robert, how did you make money? How did you become wealthy?’ I’ve shared that with them—and now with you. First of all, I want you to understand that those are two different questions. Yes, of course, money can help you create wealth. But wealth is far more than a number on your bank statement. So if wealth isn’t about money, what exactly is it? Wealth is independence. Real wealth is the ability to live your life on your own terms. It’s the freedom to switch careers, spend time with your family, improve your community, and make a difference in the world. Building Wealth will help you not only to reach your own financial goals, but also to attain this level of wealth.”—Robert Barbera

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MY STORY IS about an addict whose name is Elijah Wayne Jackson, Eli for short. This has many characters, mainly drug addicts. I have woven the Lady in Red on the assumption that she is a product of his paranoia. The story line, I hope, will bring the public to an awareness of addicts and the things they do when they are high and ingesting drugs. The story is very explicit and complete with mystery and science fiction overtures. My story takes place in a ghetto in Brooklyn, New York, around the late 1980s, a time when crack cocaine was strongly used. Although other addicts and their highs are being depicted, it is only to give the reader a sense of how things play out in the drug world as opposed to the real world. Basically, I am trying to bring science fiction to the ghetto in a more believable sense. Along with the mystery of the Lady in Red, there is another main character that comes into play, and his name is James. James is a mystery within himself. To go into more detail about my story and its characters, you will just have to read my story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many times have you heard someone say, "It’s not personal; it’s just business"? That attitude reflects a belief that business needs to be cut-throat, that it’s a dog-eat-dog world, that the pursuit of profit is the only thing that matters, and that the only way to succeed is to beat the competition. But none of this is true: business doesn’t have to be that way. The Art of Principled Entrepreneurship is a prescription for living the American Dream and for finding the fulfilment that comes from helping employees and customers improve their lives. In his 30-year career in international business strategy, economic development, and entrepreneurship, author Andreas Widmer has seen firsthand numerous companies both succeed financially and also build a people-centered venture in the process. He shares his favorite success stories and details five key principles for conducting business in ways that combine personal virtue, the latest entrepreneurial tools, and long-term perspective in order to make business a win-win proposition for everyone. At a time when the number of new business startups is at its lowest point in 50 years and more than half the workforce at existing businesses struggles with motivation, finding a better way to do business is more urgent than ever. For any entrepreneur, manager, employee, or business student seeking to build people-centered businesses and teams, The Art of Principled Entrepreneurship is an insightful, practical guide to how businesses can be run to be both virtuous and profitable.
