Book excerpt: The paper empirically investigates international productivity convergence in the manufacturing sector, which was found not converging in earlier studies. The authors analyze subsectors of aggregate manufacturing in order to compare similar technologies and to avoid the mixing of converging and nonconverging subsectors in the aggregate. Some of the subsectors converge while others, as well as aggregate manufacturing, do not. There is stronger evidence of convergence in subsectors with a smaller number of different industries. The latter serves as a proxy for the variety of technologies. Overall, the results highlight the importance of comparing similar technologies when studying productivity convergence.

Book excerpt: We investigate whether economic integration stimulates income convergence and whether changes in production, specialisation and trade patterns associated with the enlargement process foster economic growth and convergence among countries. We examine income convergence via endogenous growth model for countries in which the scale factor stemming from learning-by-doing is a prevailing feature. We illustrate a clear connection between externalities and trade among EU countries. Empirical evidence based on a panel of industries shows that learning from export and import related scale effect do significantly affect the convergence process. We find that there is a low speed of convergence across the EU manufacturing. This implies that the degree of cross-manufacturing productivity inequality disappears in the very long-run. This in turn implies that manufacturing sectors, which are predicted, to be more productive in the past, are the same sectors that are also productive today.

Book excerpt: China’s growth potential has become a hotly debated topic as the economy has reached an income level susceptible to the “middle-income trap” and financial vulnerabilities are mounting after years of rapid credit expansion. However, the existing literature has largely focused on macro level aggregates, which are ill suited to understanding China’s significant structural transformation and its impact on economic growth. To fill the gap, this paper takes a deep dive into China’s convergence progress in 38 industrial sectors and 11 services sectors, examines past sectoral transitions, and predicts future shifts. We find that China’s productivity convergence remains at an early stage, with the industrial sector more advanced than services. Large variations exist among subsectors, with high-tech industrial sectors, in particular the ICT sector, lagging low-tech sectors. Going forward, ample room remains for further convergence, but the shrinking distance to the frontier, the structural shift from industry to services, and demographic changes will put sustained downward pressure on growth, which could slow to 5 percent by 2025 and 4 percent by 2030. Digitalization, SOE reform, and services sector opening up could be three major forces boosting future growth, while the risks of a financial crisis and a reversal in global integration in trade and technology could slow the pace of convergence.

The empirical analysis aims to study the effects of international co-operative R&D on short term productivity gains among European manufacturing firms and to clarify the role of spillovers in the process of technological diffusion. We find substantial evidence of convergence across firms in Europe, that the overall convergence process is influenced by the presence of international R&D co-operation and that symmetric Research Joint Ventures (RJVs) increase productivity to a greater extent than RJVs between asymmetric firms. The convergence process is affected by the presence of RJVs, but in this analysis we do not detect that convergence is positively affected by country and sectoral trade and patents.
