"My wife, Dick." "So was I! Aint it odd how fellers fall to thinkin' of thar little women, when they get a quiet spell like this?" "Fortunate for us that we do get it, and have such gentle bosom guests to keep us brave and honest through the trials and temptations of a life like ours." October moonlight shone clearly on the solitary tree, draped with gray moss, scarred by lightning and warped by wind, looking like a venerable warrior, whose long campaign was nearly done; and underneath was posted the guard of four. Behind them twinkled many camp-fires on a distant plain, before them wound a road ploughed by the passage of an army, strewn with the relics of a rout. On the right, a sluggish river glided, like a serpent, stealthy, sinuous, and dark, into a seemingly impervious jungle; on the left, a Southern swamp filled the air with malarial damps, swarms of noisome life, and discordant sounds that robbed the hour of its repose. The men were friends as well as comrades, for though gathered from the four quarters of the Union, and dissimilar in education, character, and tastes, the same spirit animated all; the routine of camp life threw them much together, and mutual esteem soon grew into a bond of mutual good fellowship. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. These words of Maupassant to Jose Maria de Heredia on the occasion of a memorable meeting are, in spite of their morbid solemnity, not an inexact summing up of the brief career during which, for ten years, the writer, by turns undaunted and sorrowful, with the fertility of a master hand-produced poetry, novels, romances and travels, only to sink prematurely into the abyss of madness and death. . . . . This book contains all thirteen volumes of his original short stories. THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL MAUPASSANT SHORT STORIES Over the course of his career, French writer Guy de Maupassant made a number of important contributions to the then-emergent genre of short stories. Today, critics regard him as one of the most accomplished virtuosos of short fiction. This comprehensive collection of Maupassant's short works showcases the writer's unique talents, which include an unvarnished, straightforward style and a mastery of narrative structure. Book excerpt: The 'SAKI - Ultimate Collection: 145 Novels & Short Stories; Including Plays, Sketches & Historical Study' anthology is a comprehensive gathering that underscores the wit, irony, and discerning critique of Edwardian society encapsulated in the works of H. H. Munro, known by his pen name Saki. This collection showcases a remarkable diversity of literary styles - from the succinct satire of his short stories to the nuanced drama of his plays, and insightful sketches of the historical context in which he wrote. Notable for its inclusion of lesser-known works alongside celebrated stories, this anthology offers a unique lens through which to view the breadth of Saki's literary contributions and understanding of human nature and societal follies. The contributing authors, in this case, Saki himself, with his distinct literary persona, provides a vivid tableau of the social mores and the undercurrents of discontent that characterized the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods. His keen observation, coupled with a sharp, often dark humor, captures the complexities and contradictions of his time, making his work an important part of literary and cultural discussions of the early 20th century. For readers seeking to immerse themselves in the Edwardian period through the prism of satire and to appreciate the craft of short storytelling at its finest, 'SAKI - Ultimate Collection' is an invaluable compilation. Offering not just entertainment but also a deep, multi-faceted historical perspective, this anthology is a testament to the enduring relevance of Sakis works. Scholars, enthusiasts, and new readers alike will find in this collection a rich source of study, reflection, and enjoyment, bridging the gap between literary art and historical insight.
