Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major-General Sir Richard Hannay is called in to investigate rumours of an uprising in Constantinople. Once there, he and his friends must thwart the Germans' plans to use religion in winning the war. The book opens in November 1915, with Hannay and his friend Sandy convalescing from wounds received at the Battle of Loos. Sir Walter Bullivant, a senior intelligence officer, summons Hannay to the Foreign Office. Bullivant briefs Hannay on the political situation in the Middle East, suggesting that the Germans and their Turkish allies are plotting to create a Muslim uprising, that will throw the Middle East, India and North Africa into turmoil. Bullivant proposes that Hannay investigate the rumours, following a clue left on a slip of paper with the words ""Kasredin"", ""cancer"" and ""v.I"" written by Bullivant's son a spy, who was recently killed in the region... Richard Hannay is a character created by Scottish novelist John Buchan, based on Edmund Ironside, from Edinburgh, a spy during the Second Boer War. John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist and historian and also served as Canada's Governor General. His 100 works include nearly thirty novels, seven collections of short stories and biographies. But, the most famous of his books were the adventure and spy thrillers and it is for these that he is now best remembered. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories in this third and final volume of John Buchan's complete short stories were written between 1912 and his death in 1940. These are the stories published when Buchan was at the height of his fame. Eight of them appear here for the first time as part of his oeuvre. Several of the stories in this collection are drawn from Buchan's experiences as a war correspondent in the First World War, first on the Western Front and then running wartime propaganda, but they are very varied in subject and treatment. The stories range from Richard Hannay's eerie tale set in the Transvaal and the Duke of Burminster's comic adventure in the Scottish Borders to Edard Leithen's tangle with South American revolutionaries in central London and Oliver Pugh's journey of discovery in 'the Sachischen Sweitz'. Also included are two of Buchan's children's stories, 'The Magic Walking Stick' and 'The Strange Adventures of Mr Andrew Hawthorn'. John Buchan has the gift of all great story tellers of making the reader want to turn the page to see what happens next. Inevitably, some of his stories, written to a deadline, are merely workmanlike but some have the mark of greatness: the ability to stay in the mind of the reader long after the story has been read. 'Fans - and they are still numbered in tens of thousands - forget or do not even know that he had been a sort of infant prodigy. At Oxford he took on a literary agent and he achieved an entry in Who's Who when he was only 23. That was on the strength of some of the writing represented in these reissues of his early short stories . . .' - Sunday Telegraph 'Among the most successful authors of his generation . . .' - Connoisseurs Scotland 'There is much in the book to interest and delight any Buchan addict.' - Evening Standard "Andrew Lownie has done a skilful job in editing them, and it is good to have the complete set." Douglas Hurd, The Sunday Telegraph "Here are riches indeed...they can stand in the same company as anything written by his contemporaries Walter de la Mare or AE Coppard." Trevor Royle, Scotland on Sunday 'If the novelist and writer of short stories, John Buchan, is enjoying something of a revival it is due in large part to his biographer, Andrew Lownie...This is a welcome addition to the library of British letters.' The Contemporary Review ..".displays Buchan's mastery of an art-form which has suffered sorely from the unholy alliance of paperback and television....this collection will be indispensable for any estimate of Buchan as a writer. The three introductions and the editorial notes are full of insights into Buchan's techniques as well as his kindly but ironical sense of humour, his interests, emotions, and obsessions. " The Herald ..".a reminder, not only of Scotland's influence on Buchan's imagination, but his talent as a writer of short stories, a notoriously difficult genre." Literary Review ..".they should certainly be in the libraries of institutions where modern Scottish literature is part of the course..." Books in Scotland "We find in these stories many of Buchan's pet obsessions, like mountaineering, the art of disguise and the power of the temenos or sacred pagan grove." The Spectator ..".there is much in the book to interest and delight any Buchan addict." John Grigg, Evening Standard ..".the definitive Buchan collection...Any fan of Buchan would find these a delightful read." Chapman Magazine "This is a handsome and, for Buchan addicts, an indispensable addition to their shelves...editor Andrew Lownie's introductions to each volume, and his notes on the genesis and publishing history of every story in the canon, are brief but scholarly, vitally informative without being partisan." Bio John Buchan (August 1875 - 11 February 1940) was a British novelist, historian, and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the 15th since Canadian Confederation. After a brief legal career, Buchan simultaneously began his writing career and his political and diplomatic careers, serving as a private secretary to the administrator of various colonies in southern Africa. He eventually wrote propaganda for the British war effort during the First World War. He was elected Member of Parliament for the Combined Scottish Universities in 1927, but he spent most of his time on his writing career, notably writing The Thirty-Nine Steps and other adventure fiction. In 1935, King George V, on the advice of Prime Minister R. B. Bennett, appointed Buchan to replace the Earl of Bessborough as Governor General of Canada, for which purpose Buchan was raised to the peerage. He occupied the post until his death in 1940. Buchan was enthusiastic about literacy and the development of Canadian culture, and he received a state funeral in Canada before his ashes were returned to the United Kingdom. Buchan's 100 works include nearly 30 novels, seven collections of short stories, and biographies of Sir Walter Scott, Caesar Augustus, and Oliver Cromwell. He was awarded the 1928 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of the Marquess of Montrose, but the most famous of his books were the spy thrillers, and it is for these that he is now best remembered. The "last Buchan" (as Graham Greene entitled his appreciative review) was the 1941 novel Sick Heart River (American title: Mountain Meadow), in which a dying protagonist confronts the questions of the meaning of life in the Canadian wilderness. Book excerpt: Greenmantle is the second of five Richard Hannay novels by John Buchan, first published in 1916 by Hodder & Stoughton, London. It is one of two Hannay novels set during the First World War, the other being Mr Standfast (1919); Hannay's first and best-known adventure, The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915), is set in the period immediately before the war started. Excerpted from Greenmantle on Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. To Caroline Grosvenor During the past year, in the intervals of an active life, I have amused myself with constructing this tale. It has been scribbled in every kind of odd place and moment-in England and abroad, during long journeys, in half-hours between graver tasks; and it bears, I fear, the mark of its gipsy begetting. But it has amused me to write, and I shall be well repaid if it amuses you-and a few others-to read. Let no man or woman call its events improbable. The war has driven that word from our vocabulary, and melodrama has become the prosiest realism. Things unimagined before happen daily to our friends by sea and land. The one chance in a thousand is habitually taken, and as often as not succeeds. Coincidence, like some new Briareus, stretches a hundred long arms hourly across the earth. Some day, when the full history is written-sober history with ample documents-the poor romancer will give up business and fall to reading Miss Austen in a hermitage. The characters of the tale, if you think hard, you will recall. Sandy you know well. That great spirit was last heard of at Basra, where he occupies the post that once was Harry Bullivant's. Richard Hannay is where he longed to be, commanding his battalion on the ugliest bit of front in the West. Mr John S. Blenkiron, full of honour and wholly cured of dyspepsia, has returned to the States, after vainly endeavouring to take Peter with him. As for Peter, he has attained the height of his ambition. He has shaved his beard and joined the Flying Corps. John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, was a Scottish novelist, historian and Unionist politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the 15th since Canadian Confederation. His best known work is arguably The Thirty-nine Steps (1915) Buchan's 100 works include nearly thirty novels, seven collections of short stories, and biographies of Sir Walter Scott, Caesar Augustus, and Oliver Cromwell. Buchan was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of the Marquess of Montrose, but the most famous of his books were the spy thrillers, and it is for these that he is now best remembered

Book excerpt: The Island of Sheep (1936) is a novel by John Buchan. It is the last of his novels to revolve around Richard Hannay and Sandy Arbuthnot. The action occurs twelve years later on from the last novel, when Hannay, now in his fifties, is called by an old oath to protect the son of a man he once knew, who is also heir to the secret of a great treasure. He obtains help from Sandy Arbuthnot, now Lord Clanroyden, and Lombard. The action takes place in England, Scotland and on the Island of Sheep.
