Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to develop a generative theory of shape that has two properties we regard as fundamental to intelligence –(1) maximization of transfer: whenever possible, new structure should be described as the transfer of existing structure; and (2) maximization of recoverability: the generative operations in the theory must allow maximal inferentiability from data sets. We shall show that, if generativity satis?es these two basic criteria of - telligence, then it has a powerful mathematical structure and considerable applicability to the computational disciplines. The requirement of intelligence is particularly important in the gene- tion of complex shape. There are plenty of theories of shape that make the generation of complex shape unintelligible. However, our theory takes the opposite direction: we are concerned with the conversion of complexity into understandability. In this, we will develop a mathematical theory of und- standability. The issue of understandability comes down to the two basic principles of intelligence - maximization of transfer and maximization of recoverability. We shall show how to formulate these conditions group-theoretically. (1) Ma- mization of transfer will be formulated in terms of wreath products. Wreath products are groups in which there is an upper subgroup (which we will call a control group) that transfers a lower subgroup (which we will call a ?ber group) onto copies of itself. (2) maximization of recoverability is insured when the control group is symmetry-breaking with respect to the ?ber group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite our impression of a seamless spatial world, mature human spatial knowledge is composed of sub-systems, each specialized. This book uses the case of Williams syndrome — a rare genetic deficit - to argue for specialization of function in both normal and unusual development. The evidence suggests a speculative hypothesis linking the genetic deficit to changes in the timing of emergence for different sub-systems. More broadly, the book shows the complexity of spatial cognition, its genetic correlates, and realization in the brain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents prospective, industrially proven methods and software solutions for storing, processing, and viewing multimedia content on digital cameras, camcorders, TV, and mobile devices. Most of the algorithms described here are implemented as systems on chip firmware or as software products and have low computational complexity and memory consumption. In the four parts of the book, which contains a total of 16 chapters, the authors address solutions for the conversion of images and videos by super-resolution, depth estimation and control and mono-to-stereo (2D to 3D) conversion; display applications by video editing; the real-time detection of sport episodes; and the generation and reproduction of natural effects. The practical principles of machine learning are illustrated using technologies such as image classification as a service, mobile user profiling, and automatic view planning with dictionary-based compressed sensing in magnetic resonance imaging. The implementation of these technologies in mobile devices is discussed in relation to algorithms using a depth camera based on a colour-coded aperture, the animated graphical abstract of an image, a motion photo, and approaches and methods for iris recognition on mobile platforms. The book reflects the authors’ practical experience in the development of algorithms for industrial R&D and the commercialization of technologies. Explains digital techniques for digital cameras, camcorders, TV, mobile devices; Offers essential algorithms for the processing pipeline in multimedia devices and accompanying software tools; Features advanced topics on data processing, addressing current technology challenges.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 22nd Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching, CPM 2011, held in Palermi, Italy, in June 2011. The 36 revised full papers presented together with 3 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. The papers address issues of searching and matching strings and more complicated patterns such as trees, regular expressions, graphs, point sets, and arrays. The goal is to derive non-trivial combinatorial properties of such structures and to exploit these properties in order to either achieve superior performance for the corresponding computational problems or pinpoint conditions under which searches cannot be performed efficiently. The meeting also deals with problems in computational biology, data compression and data mining, coding, information retrieval, natural language processing and pattern recognition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Create low power, higher performance circuits with shorter design times using this practical guide to asynchronous design. This practical alternative to conventional synchronous design enables performance close to full-custom designs with design times that approach commercially available ASIC standard cell flows. It includes design trade-offs, specific design examples, and end-of-chapter exercises. Emphasis throughout is placed on practical techniques and real-world applications, making this ideal for circuit design students interested in alternative design styles and system-on-chip circuits, as well as circuit designers in industry who need new solutions to old problems.
