Book excerpt: This report extends the application of on-line monitoring to equipment and process condition monitoring, encompassing an array of technologies including vibration monitoring, acoustic monitoring, loose parts monitoring, motor current signature analysis and noise diagnostics, as well as vibration analysis of the reactor core and the primary circuit. Furthermore, this report includes the application of modeling technologies for equipment and process condition monitoring. A majority of these technologies depend on existing data from existing sensors and first principles models to estimate equipment and process behavior using empirical and physical modeling techniques. In doing so, pattern recognition tools such as neural networks, fuzzy classification of data, multivariate state estimation and other means are used. These means are described in the report, and examples of their application and implementation are provided. The benefits of OLM for performance verification of process instruments were described in the first report and included such advantages as the ability to extend the calibration interval of pressure, level and flow transmitters, detection of blockages, voids and leaks in pressure sensing lines, detection of degradation of the dynamic response of process instruments, and the like. Examples of benefits of OLM for condition monitoring include: (1) the ability to determine the onset of failure of pumps, valves, motors and reactor vessel components; (2) residual life assessment of equipment; (3) equipment life extension and aging management; (4) the ability to establish objective schedules for preventive maintenance, equipment refurbishment or replacement; and (5) maintenance cost reduction, efficiency improvements, reduction of plant outages, and reduction of radiation exposure to plant personnel.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: On-line monitoring techniques have been under development over the past two decades for a variety of applications in process and power industries. In the nuclear power industry, on-line monitoring techniques have been considered for instrument calibration verification as well as equipment and plant condition monitoring. This publication reviews the state of the art in on-line equipment monitoring for nuclear power plant (NPP) applications. Its focus is on instrument calibration verification and extension of calibration intervals of sensors, transmitters and channels. This publication also includes reviews of regulatory positions on this subject and provides examples of implementation of on-line monitoring techniques in NPPs. Furthermore, the in-situ methods for verifying the dynamic performance and response time of process instrumentation are reviewed.--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: The nuclear industry and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) have been working for several years on the development of an adequate process to guide the replacement of aging analog monitoring and control instrumentation in nuclear power plants with modern digital instrumentation without introducing off-setting safety problems. This book identifies criteria for the USNRC's review and acceptance of digital applications in nuclear power plants. It focuses on eight areas: software quality assurance, common-mode software failure potential, systems aspects of digital instrumentation and control technology, human factors and human-machine interfaces, safety and reliability assessment methods, dedication of commercial off-the-shelf hardware and software, the case-by-case licensing process, and the adequacy of technical infrastructure.

Book excerpt: The contribution of human performance to the occurrence of significant events and consequently to overall performance improvement in the nuclear field has been well documented. Nuclear industry experience shows that within nuclear power plants, 80% of significant events can be attributed to human error. Monitoring and continually improving human performance has now become one of the key challenges in the management of human resources for a nuclear facility. This publication provides practical guidance in this area and will assist Member States to review and improve the systems and process for improving human performance as a major contribution to sustaining and improving the performance of nuclear facilities.

Book excerpt: This report provides key results of a three-year experimental and theoretical research and development effort performed under the auspices of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The goal of the R&D was to establish the validity of online calibration monitoring of process instrumentation channels in nuclear power plants. The author concludes that the normal outputs of instrument channels in nuclear plants can be monitored over a fuel cycle while the plant is operating and during startup and shutdown periods to verify the calibration of the instruments, thereby improving plant efficiency and safety, eliminating unnecessary calibrations, and reducing operations and maintenance costs.

While operating performance of nuclear power plants has been improving in recent years and has generally been comparable to or better than that of fossil fired plants in the same size ranges, performance during construction has been variable. Although additional licensing requirements, public intervention and funding problems have been blamed for most of the delays and cost increases, there is growing recognition that lack of proper project management has been a major factor.

Book excerpt: Plant life management (PLiM) is a methodology focussed on the safety-first management of nuclear power plants over their entire lifetime. It incorporates and builds upon the usual periodic safety reviews and licence renewals as part of an overall framework designed to assist plant operators and regulators in assessing the operating conditions of a nuclear power plant, and establishing the technical and economic requirements for safe, long-term operation. Understanding and mitigating ageing in nuclear power plants critically reviews the fundamental ageing-degradation mechanisms of materials used in nuclear power plant structures, systems and components (SSC), along with their relevant analysis and mitigation paths, as well as reactor-type specific PLiM practices. Obsolescence and other less obvious ageing-related aspects in nuclear power plant operation are also examined in depth. Part one introduces the reader to the role of nuclear power in the global energy mix, and the importance and relevance of plant life management for the safety regulation and economics of nuclear power plants. Key ageing degradation mechanisms and their effects in nuclear power plant systems, structures and components are reviewed in part two, along with routes taken to characterise and analyse the ageing of materials and to mitigate or eliminate ageing degradation effects. Part three reviews analysis, monitoring and modelling techniques applicable to the study of nuclear power plant materials, as well as the application of advanced systems, structures and components in nuclear power plants. Finally, Part IV reviews the particular ageing degradation issues, plant designs, and application of plant life management (PLiM) practices in a range of commercial nuclear reactor types. With its distinguished international team of contributors, Understanding and mitigating ageing in nuclear power plants is a standard reference for all nuclear plant designers, operators, and nuclear safety and materials professionals and researchers. Introduces the reader to the role of nuclear power in the global energy mix Reviews the fundamental ageing-degradation mechanisms of materials used in nuclear power plant structures, systems and components (SSC) Examines topics including elimination of ageing effects, plant design, and the application of plant life management (PLiM) practices in a range of commercial nuclear reactor types
