Download or read book Rings of Continuous Functions written by L. Gillman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is addressed to those who know the meaning of each word in the title: none is defined in the text. The reader can estimate the knowledge required by looking at Chapter 0; he should not be dis couraged, however, if he finds some of its material unfamiliar or the presentation rather hurried. Our objective is a systematic study of the ring C(X) of all real-valued continuous functions on an arbitrary topological space X. We are con cerned with algebraic properties of C(X) and its subring C*(X) of bounded functions and with the interplay between these properties and the topology of the space X on which the functions are defined. Major emphasis is placed on the study of ideals, especially maximal ideals, and on their associated residue class rings. Problems of extending continuous functions from a subspace to the entire space arise as a necessary adjunct to this study and are dealt with in considerable detail. The contents of the book fall naturally into three parts. The first, comprising Chapters 1 through 5 and the beginning of Chapter 10, presents the fundamental aspects of the subject insofar as they can be discussed without introducing the Stone-Cech compactification. In Chapter 3, the study is reduced to the case of completely regular spaces.

Book Synopsis Banach Spaces of Analytic Functions by : Kenneth Hoffman
Download or read book Banach Spaces of Analytic Functions written by Kenneth Hoffman and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic of pure mathematics, this advanced graduate-level text explores the intersection of functional analysis and analytic function theory. Close in spirit to abstract harmonic analysis, it is confined to Banach spaces of analytic functions in the unit disc. The author devotes the first four chapters to proofs of classical theorems on boundary values and boundary integral representations of analytic functions in the unit disc, including generalizations to Dirichlet algebras. The fifth chapter contains the factorization theory of Hp functions, a discussion of some partial extensions of the factorization, and a brief description of the classical approach to the theorems of the first five chapters. The remainder of the book addresses the structure of various Banach spaces and Banach algebras of analytic functions in the unit disc. Enhanced with 100 challenging exercises, a bibliography, and an index, this text belongs in the libraries of students, professional mathematicians, as well as anyone interested in a rigorous, high-level treatment of this topic.

Book Synopsis Exercises in Classical Ring Theory by : T.Y. Lam
Download or read book Exercises in Classical Ring Theory written by T.Y. Lam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based in large part on the comprehensive "First Course in Ring Theory" by the same author, this book provides a comprehensive set of problems and solutions in ring theory that will serve not only as a teaching aid to instructors using that book, but also for students, who will see how ring theory theorems are applied to solving ring-theoretic problems and how good proofs are written. The author demonstrates that problem-solving is a lively process: in "Comments" following many solutions he discusses what happens if a hypothesis is removed, whether the exercise can be further generalized, what would be a concrete example for the exercise, and so forth. The book is thus much more than a solution manual.

It is also a convenient reference for researchers who use basic commutative algebra.
Book Synopsis Local Analytic Geometry by : Shreeram Shankar Abhyankar
Download or read book Local Analytic Geometry written by Shreeram Shankar Abhyankar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides, for use in a graduate course or for self-study by graduate students, a well-motivated treatment of several topics, especially the following: (1) algebraic treatment of several complex variables; (2) geometric approach to algebraic geometry via analytic sets; (3) survey of local algebra; (4) survey of sheaf theory. The book has been written in the spirit of Weierstrass. Power series play the dominant role. The treatment, being algebraic, is not restricted to complex numbers, but remains valid over any complete-valued field. This makes it applicable to situations arising from number theory. When it is specialized to the complex case, connectivity and other topological properties come to the fore. In particular, via singularities of analytic sets, topological fundamental groups can be studied. In the transition from punctual to local, i.e. from properties at a point to properties near a point, the classical work of Osgood plays an important role. This gives rise to normic forms and the concept of the Osgoodian. Following Serre, the passage from local to global properties of analytic spaces is facilitated by introducing sheaf theory. Here the fundamental results are the coherence theorems of Oka and Cartan. They are followed by theory normalization due to Oka and Zariski in the analytic and algebraic cases, respectively.
Book Synopsis Recent Progress in General Topology II by : M. Husek
Download or read book Recent Progress in General Topology II written by M. Husek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-11-13 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents surveys describing recent developments in most of the primary subfields of General Topology and its applications to Algebra and Analysis during the last decade. It follows freely the previous edition (North Holland, 1992), Open Problems in Topology (North Holland, 1990) and Handbook of Set-Theoretic Topology (North Holland, 1984). The book was prepared in connection with the Prague Topological Symposium, held in 2001. During the last 10 years the focus in General Topology changed and therefore the selection of topics differs slightly from those chosen in 1992. The following areas experienced significant developments: Topological Groups, Function Spaces, Dimension Theory, Hyperspaces, Selections, Geometric Topology (including Infinite-Dimensional Topology and the Geometry of Banach Spaces). Of course, not every important topic could be included in this book. Except surveys, the book contains several historical essays written by such eminent topologists as: R.D. Anderson, W.W. Comfort, M. Henriksen, S. Mardeŝić, J. Nagata, M.E. Rudin, J.M. Smirnov (several reminiscences of L. Vietoris are added). In addition to extensive author and subject indexes, a list of all problems and questions posed in this book are added. List of all authors of surveys: A. Arhangel'skii, J. Baker and K. Kunen, H. Bennett and D. Lutzer, J. Dijkstra and J. van Mill, A. Dow, E. Glasner, G. Godefroy, G. Gruenhage, N. Hindman and D. Strauss, L. Hola and J. Pelant, K. Kawamura, H.-P. Kuenzi, W. Marciszewski, K. Martin and M. Mislove and M. Reed, R. Pol and H. Torunczyk, D. Repovs and P. Semenov, D. Shakhmatov, S. Solecki, M. Tkachenko.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Professor Eduard Cech had a si~ificant influence on the development of algebraic and general topology and differential geometry. This book, which appears on the occasion of the centenary of Cech's birth, contains some of his most important papers and traces the subsequent trends emerging from his ideas. The body of the book consists of four chapters devoted to algebraic topology, Cech-Stone compactification, dimension theory and differential geometry. Each of these includes a selection of Cech's papers, a brief summary of some results which followed from his work or constituted solutions to the problems he posed, and several selected papers by various authors concerning the areas of study he initiated. The book also contains a concise biography borrowed with minor changes from the book Topological papers of E. tech, a list of Cech's publications and a very brief note on his activity in the didactics of mathematics. The editors wish to express their sincere gratitude to all who contributed to the completion and publication of this book.
