Book Synopsis Ioannis Antiocheni fragmenta quae supersunt omnia by : Sergei Mariev

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much read in Byzantium, the historical work of John of Antioch is one of the most important, if as yet intangible, instances of the transmission of tradition in Late Antique historiography. Besides this “historiographical” relevance, the work is of particular significance as important testimony to the amalgamation of “pagan” and Christian concepts of time and history. An analysis of the achievements of the Late Antique and Early Byzantine chroniclers would be incomplete without an assessment of the role of John of Antioch. The edition of the text is accompanied by an English translation, notes and indices.

Book Synopsis Burchard de Volder and the Age of the Scientific Revolution by : Andrea Strazzoni
Download or read book Burchard de Volder and the Age of the Scientific Revolution written by Andrea Strazzoni and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph details the entire scientific thought of an influential natural philosopher whose contributions, unfortunately, have become obscured by the pages of history. Readers will discover an important thinker: Burchard de Volder. He was instrumental in founding the first experimental cabinet at a European University in 1675. The author goes beyond the familiar image of De Volder as a forerunner of Newtonianism in Continental Europe. He consults neglected materials, including handwritten sources, and takes into account new historiographical categories. His investigation maps the thought of an author who did not sit with an univocal philosophical school, but critically dealt with all the ‘major’ philosophers and scientists of his age: from Descartes to Newton, via Spinoza, Boyle, Huygens, Bernoulli, and Leibniz. It explores the way De Volder’s un-systematic thought used, rejected, and re-shaped their theories and approaches. In addition, the title includes transcriptions of De Volder's teaching materials: disputations, dictations, and notes. Insightful analysis combined with a trove of primary source material will help readers gain a new perspective on a thinker so far mostly ignored by scholars. They will find a thoughtful figure who engaged with early modern science and developed a place that fostered experimental philosophy.

Book Synopsis The Commentaries on the Minor Epistles of Paul by : Theodore (Bishop of Mopsuestia)
Download or read book The Commentaries on the Minor Epistles of Paul written by Theodore (Bishop of Mopsuestia) and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2010 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most famous representative of the school of Antioch, Theodore of Mopsuestia penned a number of commentaries on biblical books in both Testaments. This volume offers not only an introduction to Theodore's life and work but also the first modern-language translation of his commentaries on Paul's minor epistles (Galatians-Philemon). The English translation is accompanied by a facing Latin/Greek text based on H. B. Swete's 1880-1882 critical edition of these early fifth-century commentaries. As a prime example of 'Antiochene' exegesis and theology, they are of considerable interest, providing valuable evidence for Theodore's exegetical principles and practice, his Christology and doctrines of grace and free will, and his understanding of crucial developments in Christian ministry and church polity from the time of Paul to his own day"--
