The conference had two objectives: (1) to review the research data on the health effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids in seafoods in terms of the impact of omega-3 fatty acids on eicosanoid formation, thrombosis and inflammation, and the role of docosahexaenoic acid in membrane function and metabolism, and (2) to develop a research agenda to determine the spectrum of the health effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids of seafood origin in the American diet. The 1985 conference established the fact that omega-3 fatty acids of marine origin - eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) - play important roles in prostaglandin metabolism, thrombosis and atherosc1erosis, immunology and inflammation, and membrane function. In response to the conference recommendations, the Congress of the United States provided special funding for the establishment of a "test materials 1aboratory" within the US Department of Commerce to produce under documented quality contr01 the types and quanti ties of omega-3 te~3t materials required by biomedica1 researchers. The forms of test materials to be produced include refined fish oil, polyunsaturated fatty acid enhanced triglycerides, concentrates of esters of fatty acids, purified omega-3 fatty acids, and omega-3 mono-, di- and tri~lyceride mixtures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As life expectancy continues to increase, millions of seniors are living well into their eighties and nineties. With the aging of the baby boomers, the population of senior citizens will swell dramatically in the coming decades. These statistics will inevitably draw more attention to the aging process. What should middle-aged people expect as they grow older? What should caregivers of the elderly know about normal aging? How can we all stay healthy despite the limitations of age? In this authoritative, user-friendly guide, three experts in geriatric medicine provide the latest evidence on: healthy aging, an understanding of the modern and often confusing health care system, and information about the medical issues affecting frail older adults. They begin with the basic facts of aging, distilling the current research on the underlying molecular mechanisms, organ system changes, and associated disease risks that occur as our bodies get older. They devote separate chapters to preventative medical testing, so-called anti-aging therapies, vitamin and herbal supplements, exercise, and medication problems. In the next section, they present an overview of the American healthcare system, from making the most of a doctor''s visit and an explanation of various healthcare professionals involved in elder care to guidelines for choosing a nursing home or assisted care facility. They also discuss the health risks of a stay in the hospital, including antibiotic-resistant infections, temporary delirium, and bedsores. In the following section, they tackle the challenges of caring for a frail senior, covering a range of issues from falls, osteoporosis, and infections, to sleep difficulties, depression, and dementia. A chapter is also devoted to the last days of life and how hospice can help. The authors also provide a section on the need to plan ahead. Among the questions considered are: When should an advance directive be written? How much money will be needed for the elder years? When should a senior give up driving? At a time when geriatric medicine is becoming a rare specialty and doctors receive little training in this area, the wealth of information compiled in this outstanding volume is invaluable. Senior citizens, their families, and even healthcare professionals will find it to be an unparalleled resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Misinformation and misconceptions dominate the nutritional supplement landscape concerning the scientifically proven benefits omega-3 fish oils. Many books claim fish oil supplements to be "miracles" or "wonder pills." But, such is far from the scientific reality of failed and disappointing studies conducted on so-called fish oil products, even though many such products actually come from plants. All studies presented in my book are well referenced and discussion articles are duly credited. This book is the leader in presenting scientifically accurate data and serves to debunk the sea of lies facing the general public regarding an ocean of so-called fish oil products. Basically, there is "no truth in advertising and "anything goes," because none of these products are government regulated for quality or accuracy of contents and dosage. Sadly, marketers and profiteers will "Tell you anything, to sell you anything." Profit is the muddy waters upon which the fish oil industry bobbles about. There is a serious down side to these potentially harmful fish oil products, especially if taken in excessive amounts. Our most reliable scientific studies have found that fish oil does not reduce risk or prevent cardiovascular diseases, strokes, dementia, diabetes, macular degeneration or schizophrenia. Alarmingly, these studies show a significant increased risk of developing prostate cancer. The truth must be told. Dr. Howes was the first in the history of Tulane School of Medicine to receive double doctorate degrees in medicine and biochemistry simultaneously. He was the first to complete board eligibility in both general and plastic surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, all in a six-year period. Dr. Howes invented the triple lumen venous catheter, which has been credited with helping save the lives of over 20 million critically ill patients worldwide. His catheter became the number one venous catheter in the world and his name is well recognized in over 100 countries. He received the Harper Award from the American College for Advancement in Medicine and served as their keynote speaker and in 2013, he was the first to be awarded the Charles Farr award for "excellence in oxidative medicine." Dr. Howes is one of the few physicians and medical scientists that will tell the raw truth concerning the failure of many dietary supplements and point out their potential harm. In 2012, Americans spent $1.1 billion on omega-3 fish oil or on products containing omega-3 fish oil. Yet, books abound spouting lies of the "miraculous benefits" of these products. The public has a right to know the truth.

Book excerpt: Studies on the evolutionary aspects of diet and molecular studies included in this volume indicate that human beings evolved on a diet that was balanced in the essential fatty acids (EFA). In fact, the ratio of omega-6/omega-3 EFA was 1/1 whereas present day diets in both developed and developing countries have a much higher ratio, between 5/1 and 50/1. Additional studies show that a high ratio of omega-6/omega-3 EFA is detrimental to health and may lead to the development of chronic diseases. Improving the dietary ratio by decreasing the omega-6 fatty acids and increasing the omega-3 fatty acids is essential for brain function and for the management of cardiovascular disease, arthritis and cancer. A ratio of 4/1 or less leads to lower dosage and to the reduction of adverse effects of drugs. This volume should be of interest to a large and varied audience of researchers in academia, industry, and government; cardiologists, geneticists, immunologists, neuroscientists, and cancer specialists; as well as nutritionists, dietitians, food scientists, agriculturists, economists and regulators.

Book excerpt: No more counting carbs, calories, or fat grams! This revolutionary diet plan works with your hormones to curb your appetite, boost your metabolism, take weight off—and never put it on again. Cutting-edge scientific research shows that losing weight is not about carbs, calories, or even willpower—it’s about a hormone called leptin and how it functions in your body. Leptin is your body’s natural weight-loss mechanism: it curbs your appetite and jump-starts your metabolism. And when those hormones are working properly, they make you literally fat resistant! You will lose weight effortlessly and efficiently, and never gain those pounds back. A leading expert in the field of nutritional medicine, Dr. Leo Galland knows that if you’ve struggled to lose weight on diet after diet but still can’t shake those excess pounds, chances are you are “leptin resistant”—your body no longer responds to leptin, making it impossible to slim down, no matter what size portions or how few carbs you eat. But here’s the good news: by adding the right foods to your diet, you can quickly reverse leptin resistance and reprogram your body to start melting away the pounds. The Fat Resistance Diet is the first weight-loss plan designed specifically to combat leptin resistance, using a unique combination of anti-inflammatory and hormone-balancing foods to get your hormones working again. Used by hundreds of Dr. Galland’s patients with remarkable results, the three-phase regimen includes: STAGE 1: A fourteen-day starter program that delivers a loss of ten to fourteen pounds in the first two weeks. Inflammation-fighting superfoods work to trigger rapid weight loss and set your hormones straight. STAGE 2: A ninety-day plan that builds on the benefits of Stage 1 and delivers a loss of at least five pounds a month. You can enjoy a greater variety of foods while still keeping your hormones working overtime. STAGE 3: Sustainable for life, the meal plans in this phase keep your hormones doing their job, even after you reach your target weight, and offer an expanded, flavorful menu. With delicious recipes that are rich in healing carbs, healing fats, and powerful phytonutrients, the diet is a breeze to stick with—there are no hard-to-find ingredients, no expensive supplements, and no complicated proportions to figure out. Best of all, when you make the Fat Resistance Diet part of your life, your hormones will do your weight-loss work for you! This groundbreaking program at last reveals the true secret to weight loss success, and will transform you from a chronic dieter into a lean, fat-fighting machine.

Book excerpt: It's true. Specific fats play a crucial role in protecting us from many serious diseases - from heart disease to cancer to manic-depressive illness. Certain fats also have an impact on such everyday complaints as dry skin, intestinal troubles, and achy joints. The problem for most of us is that we hear only about one or two of these "good fats" and figure that by including some healthy oils in our diets, we're covered. What we don't realize is that by not understanding what makes a "good fat" good, we unknowingly create imbalances in our systems that may lead to these terrible disorders - despite our best intentions. In The Omega-3 Oils, pioneering researcher and physician Dr. Donald Rudin tells us how we can improve our physical and mental health by correcting these imbalances. Dr. Rudin shows how different fats act within our body, and how modern food-processing techniques have stripped a vital family of oils - the Omega-3 fatty acids - out of our food. He discusses his groundbreaking Omega-3 study, in which people suffering from a variety of chronic ailments showed remarkable improvement after taking oil rich in Omega-3, in combination with other healthful supplements. He then shows the connection between Omega intake and a variety of modern-day health concerns, including heart disease, skin problems, reproductive difficulties (in both men and women), pregnancy and breastfeeding, mental health, and the problems we experience as we age. Finally, Dr. Rudin presents the Omega Program to help bring our diet, and our health, back into balance.
