Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Life and Literature So far as space has permitted, all those contacts, national and international, that influenced the He brews, have been presented as the background of the literature. It was in the midst of national travail, with its frequent tragedy and occasional triumph, that the great Old Testament leaders ever ministered, directly to their fellow men, in the realm of morals and religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Old Testament in Its Historical Development The plan of this volume needs a word of explanation. It was originally intended to publish translations of the most important texts of the Old Testament, grouped topically and edited in such a way as to show both their relation to each other and to that process of development into the work as a Whole by which they found their place in the collection. Considerable progress had been made along these lines when the war interrupted the preparation of the series. After it was over, publishing conditions still presented sufiieient difficulties to compel a modification in the original plan, since that would have involved reprinting large parts of the Old Testament which, with but slight textual yariants, would be already accessible to any reader. It was therefore decided to shorten the quoted text to such an extent that it could be readily printed in the midst of the editorial comment, instead of as a body of documents by itself. Where necessary, the larger sections are summarized, and their significance is thus brought out at the same time. The book is obviously not any longer self-sufiicing; it is a companion to the study of the Old Testament, rather than a repository of its texts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisdom-Literature of the Old Testament The present volume completes the short Introduction to the Poetical Books of the Bible begun in The Praises of Israel, published last year. The phraseology of the title is not perfectly accurate, for Ecclesiastes is not poetical, and the Song of Songs does not properly belong to Wisdom-Literature. But the books of the Bible treated of in these two small volumes belong to the same group of Scriptures, and are conveniently studied together. If these brief Manuals prove to be of service to readers who have not time or opportunity to use larger and more valuable works, the labour of preparing them will be fully repaid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Old Testament However willingly I might have undertaken the labour of giving an entirely new form to this new edition of the Introduction to the Old Testament, ' my contemporaries have hitherto afforded me small occasion to exchange the results of my former researches against other convictions. I am obliged, therefore, to confine myself merely to remedy the defects of the former editions to the best of my judg ment and power, and bring the present one up to the level of the existing state of Biblical Literature. The proposed alterations, then, affect less the entire work. Than its details, and I h0pe to have omitted nothing essential from new works which may have appeared, either to its increase or improvement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament and the Critics The object of the author in preparing this little volume and taking the liberty of in truding it upon the public. Is not the estab lishment Of the divine authority of the Old Testament. The awful claim of being a communication from God to our race, he believes should be acknowledged only up on evidence the most unimpeachable. Yet the author most fully accepts this claim. The evidence on which it rests seems to him so ample, so overwhelming and so limitless, the thought of adequately presenting it, were he able to do so, brings the feeling of weari ness and discouragement. For more than thirty centuries the Old Testament, like some sacred fountain, has been issuing streams of healing, of hope and gladness, and every year the evidence of its divine origin has been accumulating. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poets of the Old Testament A vast amount of important work has recently been done on the poetry of the Old Testament. Thus far, however, no attempt has been made to bring home the results, as a unified whole, to the English reader. The present book seeks, within limits, to supply this want. A brief sketch is first offered of the general characteristics of Hebrew poetry. Then the growth of the literature itself is traced from its roots in the old folk-poetry of Israel to its full flower in the Psalter and Wisdom books like Proverbs and Job. The aim has been throughout to catch the heart and spirit of the poetry. Thus questions of Introduction are treated only incidentally, and by way of approach to the centre. Translations are also given of the most characteristic passages, as far as possible in the rhythm of the original. The scope of the work might, indeed, have been wider.
