Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days and Ways in Old Boston Impressed with the interesting changes that had taken place in Boston and its business methods within the last two generations, we began some time since the preparation of a brief pamphlet calling attention to some of these changes which had occurred during the business life of Mr. R. H. Stearns, who founded this business in 1847 and died in 1909. It was our intention to distribute gratuitously this pamphlet (partly advertising and partly historical) among our customers. As the work progressed, however, we found so much of interest which had occurred in the year '47 and so much of Boston history which was connected with our present location, that the original plan of a small booklet was abandoned. Moreover, competent judges advised us that the material thus collected was of more than passing importance - most of it indeed being of real historic value - which could not fail to interest a much wider circle of readers. We therefore decided to eliminate the advertising matter (unless occasional reference in signed articles or illustrations showing some of the changes which have taken place at the historic corner where this business is now located could be so construed) and to print in permanent book form the material which had been collected. This volume is the result. This volume is the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antique Views of Ye Towne of Boston No city in the United States gathers within its limits more matter of national historic import than the city of Boston. There is not a foot of its original territory (we say original from the fact that more than two thirds of its present territory is made ground), but what is associated with our country's struggle for liberty or the trials and privations of its early settlers. To the antiquary it presents an inexhaustible store of surprises and a veritable mine of pleasure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular History of Boston Some ten years ago the writer of this volume came to Boston, a stranger, for the purpose of reading in the Public Library and obtaining work as a journalist. Becoming deeply interested in works of local history, especially in those of Drake, and being unacquainted with society, he resolved to visit all the old historic places in and about Boston, in hours needed for exercise, and to study their associations. About a year ago the publishers asked him to prepare a young people's history of Boston, and to seek to make it popular and entertaining, after the methods of the Zig zag books. It was a pleasure to attempt this work, as it revived the memories of the solitary walks ten years ago, and brought into use the material then collected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Boston The story of Old Boston can never be worn threadbare, although it has been told so often. It presents no new facts; the lanes and alleys of this ancient town are almost as well known as the walks around the State House or the old City Hall. One can almost see the quaint old houses at the North End, with their pretty gardens at the side, wherein our ancestors took so much pride and comfort; every foot of the old streets and noble Common has been tramped over and over where once were the footprints of the Puritans. No, there is nothing new in this subject; everything is old and moss-covered. But what is there that appeals with greater sympathy to the heart of the Bostonian of to-day than the places where our fathers lived, died and were buried? What better, purer and nobler thoughts can possibly pass through our minds than those which tell of the trials of that band of Puritans who asked only "for freedom to worship God"? No one can doubt that our Puritan forefathers had much to contend with after leaving their native land and everything they held dear. After suffering the most dreadful privations upon the ocean, they planted themselves on our wild and rugged shores, to seek that liberty of conscience they could not enjoy at home. The ways in which they made laws and punished offenders are quite interesting, even at this late day, when more than two centuries and a half have rolled over the heads of a rather singular people and their descendants. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Boston Days Ways: From the Dawn of the Revolution Until the Town Became a City Almost of necessity a town is a different thing, and has a social life quite distinct, from a city. On its political side it is endowed with color and individuality, from the very fact that its humblest inhabitant may, at town meet ing, raise his voice to oppose the motion of the richest and most renowned man in the com munity. And, on the social side, it possesses a simplicity of interests, a delightful neighborli ness, and a quality of charming intimacy which may never be claimed by a city. So, in this book, which takes up where my St. Botolph's Town dropped it, the story of Boston's Share in the struggle for in dependence, I have stopped just short of the time when we blossomed into a munici pality and indulged in a mayor and aldermen. The end of Boston's life as a town seemed to me really the end of an era and I thought I could paint a better picture of life and manners here, during the period which followed the Revolution, if I did not venture far into the history of the nineteenth century. That was what during all my youthful days I thought about, dreamed over, wondered at. In childhood so little suffices to create a mystery. A locked door, a darkened room, a lowered voice, and immediately all the undeveloped love for the unknown leaps to the fore, the more eagerly because it has so little to feed upon, and because all the emotions are, as yet, fresh and unplayed upon. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In and About Historic Boston The military expeditions which marked Colonial New England as the land of an aggressive people received their inspiration in Boston, and recruited their strength largely from the sturdy citizens of Massachusetts Colony. It was in this section that the spirit of resistance to British tyranny found vent in action, rather than in words only. In Faneuil Hall, the Cradle of Liberty, the new spirit was truly nurtured and the city is fortunate in having preserved so much that is associated with the stirring times of the Tea Party, Bunker Hill, Paul Revere, and the famous Siege which ended when Washington fortified Dorchester Heights. The surrounding country is also rich in historical associations. To the south is Plymouth, where the Pilgrims landed in 1620, and Duxbury, the home of Standish; to the west are Lexington and Concord, where the first blood of the Revolution was shed, and the shot fired which was heard round the world; to the east are the historic towns of Lynn, Salem and Marblehead, where stirring scenes were enacted in pre-revolutionary times, and where the new has not been permitted to entirely obliterate the memories of the past.
