Book excerpt: If everything in our lives we knew to be good was gone, would we still say God is good? What if His goodness is grounded in something more than our experiences? What if that goodness actually runs so deep that it can never be erased from our souls...the very place we need to believe it most? Maybe God's goodness isn't about a set of events after all. Maybe his goodness is how He takes every event and molds us and changes us into something beautiful- even when the very thing we've experienced is anything but. Whether you know it or not, you've probably heard a part of Maria's story. News articles and T.V. screens nationwide were plastered with, "Plane from Indiana crashes in Michigan, two killed." In Oh, Goodness, Maria will take you with her as she reflects back on discovering the true goodness of God in a way that is authentic, honest, and raw. Maria connects us with the many facets of her own humanity as we join her on a journey where she asks a very simple yet profound question. "God, if you are good then why..." In this book, Maria doesn't tolerate a cookie cutter answer to such a question. If we don't believe God is good in all circumstances, then why on earth would we ever be a Christian? At some point, life is hard and painful. It's in that season we learn just where our faith lies. If God is really good then why... Join Maria as she tells about her journey and then begin to discover God's goodness in your own life. If we don't believe God is good in all circumstances, then why on earth would we ever be a Christian? At some point, life is hard and painful. It's in that season we learn just where our faith lies. If God is really good then why... From the Author: This Bible study was written as a follow up to my book, "oh, goodness". The book was written with the purpose of getting you curious about discovering God's goodness in your own life. This Bible study, however, is written with the purpose of equipping you to tell of it after you discover it. How awesome would it be if every one of you wrote your own story of God's goodness? I am not ashamed to say that my prayer continues to be that we won't just know but have faith that God is good. I spent seven years writhing in grief, pain, loss, and anxiety all stemming from this question, "How can this be good?!" I heard people try to encourage me with words, trying to convince me terrible tragedy was a part of God's plan and therefore good. I was confused, alone, and felt hopeless. It was in that place God began to teach me, through his word, about his goodness. What I found was something different than what others had tried to describe. I am sharing my journey with you because I believe sharing is what God calls us to do. We are going to read his word, meditate on his word, and consider his word through this study. The discovering of one's story often requires a journey back to remember and reflect, and the study is set up that way- as a journey. You will notice I use language that suggests we are on an actual journey because I don't want you to miss that our relationship with Jesus is more like a journey than a formula.I am praying for you as you prepare to take a journey that will set you free in Christ: discovering God's goodness when life isn't good.to your freedom,Maria Hatch - Bowersockp.s. Book excerpt: Spirit and Sacrament by pastor and author Andrew Wilson is an impassioned call to join together two traditions that are frequently and unnecessarily kept separate. It is an invitation to pursue the best of both worlds in worship, the Eucharistic and the charismatic, with the grace of God at the center. Wilson envisions church services in which healing testimonies and prayers of confession coexist, the congregation sings When I Survey the Wondrous Cross followed by Happy Day, and creeds move the soul while singing moves the body. He imagines a worship service that could come out of the book of Acts: Young men see visions, old men dream dreams, sons and daughters prophesy, and they all come together to the same Table and go on their way rejoicing. In short, Spirit and Sacrament is an appeal to bring out of the church's storehouse all of its treasures, so that God's people can worship our unrivaled Savior with sacraments and spiritual gifts, raised hands and lowered faces.

Book excerpt: Join Margaret Feinberg, one of America's most beloved teachers and writers, as she sets out on a remarkable journey to unearth God's perspective on food. What you discover will forever change the way you read the Bible--and approach every meal. This groundbreaking book provides a culinary exploration of Scripture. You'll descend 400 feet below ground into the frosty white caverns of a salt mine, fish on the Sea of Galilee, bake fresh matzo at Yale University, ferry to a remote island in Croatia to harvest olives, spend time with a Texas butcher known as "the meat apostle," and wander a California farm with one of the world's premier fig farmers. With each stop, Margaret asks, "How do you read these Scriptures, not as theologians, but in light of what you do every day?" Taste and See teaches us that: As we break bread, we find the satisfaction of our deepest hungers in the community our souls crave As we share our lives, we taste and see God's fruitfulness When we're tempted to lose heart--and we all will be--we find courage in listening to and participating in stories of God's rescuing ways In the midst of a busy life, we can all create space to taste and see God's goodness Taste and See is a delicious read that includes dozens of recipes for those who, like Margaret, believe some of life's richest moments are spent savoring a meal with those you love. See you around the table! Praise for Taste and See: "Margaret Feinberg's appetite for the feast of His grace makes you hunger for more of a fulfilling life. Read and taste the richest food for the soul!" --Ann Voskamp, bestselling author of WayMaker and One Thousand Gifts "Margaret is a storyteller who never ceases to see the beauty of the world around us. If you love God, good food, and life around the table, this book will take you on an unforgettable culinary journey through the Bible." --Jennie Allen, bestselling author of Get Out of Your Head and founder of IF:Gathering

None of us are normal according to God's definition, and the closer we get to each other, the plainer that becomes. Yet for all our quirks, sins, and jagged edges, we need each other. Community is more than just a word--it is one of our most fundamental requirements. So how do flawed, abnormal people such as ourselves master the forces that can drive us apart and come together in the life-changing relationships God designed us for? In Everybody's Normal Till You Get to Know Them, teacher and bestselling author John Ortberg zooms in on the things that make community tick. You'll get a thought-provoking look at God's heart, at others, and at yourself. Even better, you'll gain wisdom and tools for drawing closer to others in powerful, impactful ways. With humor, insight, and a gift for storytelling, Ortberg shows how community pays tremendous dividends in happiness, health, support, and growth. It's where all of us weird, unwieldy people encounter God's love in tangible ways and discover the transforming power of being loved, accepted, and valued just the way we are.

The Psalmist declared, "Taste and see that the Lord is good" (Ps 34:8), so Margaret Feinberg, one of America's most beloved Bible teachers, took the invitation literally. She embarked on a culinary and spiritual adventure that took her far and wide: descending 410 feet into a salt mine, baking fresh matzo at Yale University, harvesting olives off the Croatian coast, and tasting succulent figs at a premier farm--all to discover the truth of God’s goodness. With each person she encountered, she asked, "How do you read the Scripture in light of what you do every day?" Their answers will change the way you read the Bible forever... and the way you approach every meal. "This is a journey that changed my life, my faith, my future," she writes. "It moved me from fear and uncertainty to discover a renewed, vibrant faith again--and I believe it will do the same for you." With her delightful curiosity and humor, you'll learn to: • Overcome awkwardness and nurture deeper connections around any table. • Rise above uncertainty, knowing what seeds God has planted in you. • Learn how you were uniquely created to help others flourish. • Unlock the satisfying and fruitful life you've been created for. • Last, but not least, you’ll learn how to make some delicious meals along the way! Join Margaret in this deeply nourishing six-week video Bible study sprinkled with step-by-step recipes and biblical insights. Book excerpt: Neuropsychologist Offers Hope to Those Struggling with Depression As a board-certified neuropsychologist, Dr. Michelle Bengtson sees the devastation of depression. Early on, she practiced the most effective treatments and prescribed them for her clients. But when she experienced depression herself, she found that the treatments she had recommended were lacking. Her experience showed her the missing component in treating depression. In Hope Prevails, Dr. Bengtson writes with deep compassion, blending her training and faith, to offer readers a hope grounded in God's love and grace. She helps readers understand what depression is, how it affects them spiritually, and what, by God's grace, it cannot do. The result is an approach that offers the hope of release, not just the management of symptoms. For those who struggle with depression and those who want to help them, Hope Prevails offers hope for the future.
