Excerpt: ...for beauty and to adorn the face rather than for such uses. Below the nose is placed the mouth, with two functions: one being to speak, and the other to convey food whither it is needed. And being cut across the face it was next hemmed round by Nature with those two lips of finest coral, in the image of the margin of a fair fountain. It was dedicated by the ancients to Mentis, for here is the seat of tender kisses, apt to draw two souls in exchange out of one body into the sages have said that the laugh was nothing less than the radiance from the serenity of the soul, and thus it is most seemly in a noble and gentle lady (if we may believe Plato in his "Republic," as I do for my part), as a manifestation of her happiness, to laugh with modesty, severity and candour, without much motion of her body, in a low tone, and rarely rather than often. As doth that cousin of Selvaggia's, of whom you were disputing but just now. Verdespina. But your gossip, who often laughed, was praised for her laugh as much as for any other charm; and she had so many that in Prato she deservedly held the highest place above all other beauties. Celso. My gossip was so full of grace that if she had forever laughed she would forever have pleased. But this is not the case with all. Your Amaretta, who wrinkles her face when she laughs, if she laughed so often would not please so well, albeit she has the finest teeth. But there are certain graces which Heaven rarely vouchsafes here below and which fall on few. Hence laughter should be rare, for too much laughter is a sign of too great mirth, and a discreet lady cannot be too mirthful. Now Nature, knowing how much grace it would lend if she gave the bare teeth a little border about the roots, and how much charm...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1548, On the Beauty of Women purports to record two conversations shared by a young gentleman, Celso, and four ladies of the upper bourgeoisie in the vicinity of Florence. One afternoon Celso and the ladies consider universal beauty. On a subsequent evening, they attempt to fashion a composite picture of perfect beauty by combining the beautiful features of women they know. The standards of beauty established in the garden give way to the artistic, creative imagination of the human spirit, and the group's movement from garden to hall seems to echo the dialogue's movement from Nature to Art, from divinely to humanly created beauty. Konrad Eisenbichler and Jacqueline Murray have provided the first translation into English of Firenzuola's dialogue since the nineteenth century. In their introduction, they argue that Firenzuola's work presents a useful point of entry into the society and values of the mid-sixteenth century. In its discussion of beauty, the dialogue reveals the intersection of Neoplantonic philosophy and mathematically based artistic theory, both inherited from classical antiquity. Indeed, Firenzuola's treatise has been assessed as one of the most significant expositions of Renaissance aesthetics.

Book excerpt: Sweet Girls, Life is an incredible thing. You deserve to live a life full of self-love and confidence, secure in the knowledge that you are enough. But unfortunately, sometimes we feel as if we have to fit in and conform to others’ expectations of beauty. If you believe you need to change who you are to be beautiful, then we must change the conversation about beauty culture. Believe me when I say, Sweet Girl, you are, without a doubt, enough. Love, H Her Story is a proactive approach to preparing our girls for the cultural milestones they will encounter as they navigate the obstacle course known as puberty. With humor, personal narrative and historical perspective, Stark guides girls and their parents through the histories of makeup, hair-removal practices, fashion, bras, hair trends and even friendships. She breaks down these cultural mindsets in easy-to-read, understandable terms. She helps girls and parents understand that these practices should be options, not expectations.

Book excerpt: This study argues that twentieth-century American women writers' textual representations of female beauty generally recognize a link between beauty standards and aesthetic ideology, exploring female beauty as a symptom of prevailing ideas about art and esthetics. Female beauty, in their texts, is not merely an issue of whether a female character is pretty or not; it is an expression of the controlling discourses negotiated by character, text, and author. In this study, therefore, the women writers' texts are read after interchapters outlining their key cultural and literary contexts. Revising Paul de Man's method of exploring scenes of reading, this study focuses on scenes of beauty in which a character, narrator, or speaker negotiates ideas about beauty. The author pairs Euro-American and African American women writers across the century in three generations: H.D. and Zora Neale Hurston; Gwendolyn Brooks and Sylvia Plath; and Toni Morrison and Louis Gluck. As such, this study offers a landmark black/white dialogue on female beauty in twentieth-century American culture and literature. Scenes of beauty in the texts of these writers suggest multiple feminine aesthetics in twentieth-century American writing, unified in their negotiation of the aesthetic ideologies embodied in female beauty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Dialogue: (M)Uses of Culture results from an international symposium held at Ege University, Izmir, Turkey, in 2006, which brought together scholars from over ten countries, and from multiple academic backgrounds, who share professional interest in womenâ (TM)s studies, and, to no less degree, in current womenâ (TM)s realities. The book presents a collection of essays united by a common focus on the position of women as objects of cultural production in different geographic, national, and political contexts, as well as the character and typology of womenâ (TM)s contribution to cultural activity across the ethnic or religious divide marking the face of contemporary world. The volume comprises two sections: the first, titled â oeWomen in Dialogue, â contains contributions which analyze literary representations of women from a variety of perspectives, and from diverse spatial and temporal locations. The second part, titled â oe(M)Uses of Culture, â includes personalized observations by several women writers, of both poetry and fiction, their commentaries on their own work as artists, and their deeply experienced â oemusingsâ on the position of women as artists in the world of today. The essays that this volume brings together are varied in subject matter; yet they are connected by the common theme, epitomized in the metaphor of dialogue, as a platform for active, productive communication, leading â " on the pages of the book, if not elsewhere â " to learning, and mutual understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drew A. Hyland, one of Continental philosophy's keenest interpreters of Plato, takes up the question of beauty in three Platonic dialogues, the Hippias Major, Symposium, and Phaedrus. What Plato meant by beauty is not easily characterized, and Hyland's close readings show that Plato ultimately gives up on the possibility of a definition. Plato's failure, however, tells us something important about beauty—that it cannot be reduced to logos. Exploring questions surrounding love, memory, and ideal form, Hyland draws out the connections between beauty, the possibility of philosophy, and philosophical living. This new reading of Plato provides a serious investigation into the meaning of beauty and places it at the very heart of philosophy.
