The rule as we understand it today is intended to protect the accused. But Whitman traces its history back through centuries of Christian theology and common-law history to reveal that the original concern was to protect the souls of jurors. In Christian tradition, a person who experienced doubt yet convicted an innocent defendant was guilty of a mortal sin. Jurors fearful for their own souls were reassured that they were safe, as long as their doubts were not “reasonable.” Today, the old rule of reasonable doubt survives, but it has been turned to different purposes. The result is confusion for jurors, and a serious moral challenge for our system of justice.

Burdens of Proof: Faith, Doubt, and Identity in Autobiography examines a broad range of impostures in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and asks about each one: Why this particular imposture? Why here and now? Susanna Egan’s historical survey of texts from early Christendom to the nineteenth century provides an understanding of the author in relation to the text and shows how plagiarism and other false claims have not always been regarded as the frauds we consider them today. The first part is a thorough introduction to Morse theory, a fundamental tool of differential topology. It defines the Morse complex and the Morse homology, and develops some of their applications. Morse homology also serves a simple model for Floer homology, which is covered in the second part. Floer homology is an infinite-dimensional analogue of Morse homology. Its involvement has been crucial in the recent achievements in symplectic geometry and in particular in the proof of the Arnold conjecture. The building blocks of Floer homology are more intricate and imply the use of more sophisticated analytical methods, all of which are explained in this second part. The three appendices present a few prerequisites in differential geometry, algebraic topology and analysis. The book originated in a graduate course given at Strasbourg University, and contains a large range of figures and exercises. Morse Theory and Floer Homology will be particularly helpful for graduate and postgraduate students.

When asked why, they give a number of reasons, but all seem to point to a lack of any rationally justified defense of what religion is teaching. Specifically, they state that there is no scientific or other specific evidence of a creator, and the more they study and are taught in college, the less they believe what is being taught in the church. They describe traditional religious beliefs as unreasonable, unproven and requiring blind faith. Their intellectual skepticism is what is drawing them into agnosticism and atheism. Earlier studies revealed large majorities of youth who were raised in the church turning away from their faith during their college years. Indeed, atheism is growing the fastest in the demographic of 18 to 29 years old. These young people have received little or no training in how to defend the beliefs they were taught as children. They have been taught the same doctrine and dogma that has been taught for centuries. If this troubling trend is to be reversed, or even slowed, dramatic changes in what organized religion is offering these kids during their formative years must take place. Whether or not any church is willing to present an updated interpretation of Scripture based upon a factual context remains to be seen. If little or nothing happens, the numbers of people of faith in America will gradually dwindle until America resembles Europe; lots of beautiful places of worship - empty. Simply tourist attractions.
