Book Synopsis ODE/PDE α-synuclein Models for Parkinson's Disease by : William E. Schiesser
Download or read book ODE/PDE α-synuclein Models for Parkinson's Disease written by William E. Schiesser and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ODE/PDE Alpha-Synuclein Models for Parkinson's Disease discusses a mechanism for the evolution of Parkinson's Disease (PD) based on the dynamics of the protein a-synuclein, a monomer that has been implicated in this disease. Specifically, a-synuclein morphs and aggregates into a polymer that can interfere with functioning neurons and lead to neurodegenerative pathology. This book first demonstrates computer-based implementation of a prototype ODE/PDE model for the dynamics of the a-synuclein monomer and polymer, and then details the methodology for the numerical integration of ODE/PDE systems which can be applied to computer-based analyses of alternative models based on the reader's interest. This book facilitates immediate computer use for research without the necessity to first learn the basic concepts of numerical analysis for ODE/PDEs and programming algorithms - Includes PDE routines based on the method of lines (MOL) for computer-based implementation of ODE/PDE models - Offers transportable computer source codes for readers, with line-by-line code descriptions relating to the mathematical model and algorithms - Authored by a leading researcher and educator in ODE/PDE models
Book Synopsis Network Spread Models of Neurodegenerative Diseases by : Ashish Raj
Download or read book Network Spread Models of Neurodegenerative Diseases written by Ashish Raj and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a real pleasure to introduce the excellent papers contributed by leading experts to our Research Topic proposing various network models of dementia spread. The focus is strongly on disease-specific mathematical modeling rather than general graph theory. The emerging field of network neuroscience visualizes the brain as a graph consisting of nodes representing regions and edges as connections between them. This complex network supports efficient communication along neural projections, but also, unfortunately, the transmission and progression of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disorders. If we could know the brain’s network organization, could we then predict how degenerative processes might develop on this network? As these papers demonstrate, the answer is, increasingly, yes.

Book Synopsis Dynamic Modeling of Transport Process Systems by : C. A. Silebi
Download or read book Dynamic Modeling of Transport Process Systems written by C. A. Silebi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a methodology for the development and computer implementation of dynamic models for transport process systems. Rather than developing the general equations of transport phenomena, it develops the equations required specifically for each new example application. These equations are generally of two types: ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs) for which time is an independent variable. The computer-based methodology presented is general purpose and can be applied to most applications requiring the numerical integration of initial-value ODEs/PDEs. A set of approximately two hundred applications of ODEs and PDEs developed by the authors are listed in Appendix 8.

This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waking and the Reticular Activating System in Health and Disease provides a comprehensive overview on the "activating properties of the RAS. In health, the RAS provides the basis against which we assess the external world, and in disease it distorts that world and shatters our self-image. This book describes the physiology of each process, how it is disturbed in each disorder, and what the most appropriate treatment should be. Dr. Garcia-Rill, along with contributions from leading specialists, discusses the understanding of the RAS as a system not only modulating waking, but also in charge of survival mechanisms such as fight vs flight responses and reflexes. The full spectrum of these functions helps explain the complexity of symptoms evident in such disorders as disparate as schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. The book reviews the mechanisms that control waking and arousal, and especially how those mechanisms malfunction in certain neurological and psychiatric disorders. - First comprehensive overview on the RAS and its role in schizophrenia, major depression, autism, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and other neurologic and mental diseases - Offers a new way of thinking about brain function and the role of the RAS in our waking lives - Written by a leading translational neuroscience researcher with contributions by specialists in the field

Book Synopsis Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells by : Mitchell Khan
Download or read book Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells written by Mitchell Khan and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2021 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Chapter 1, the COVID-19 pandemic and the damage mechanisms on the cellular level which can be ameliorated with the cellular therapies is thoroughly evaluated. Previous and ongoing stem cell clinical trial data from diseases with similar symptoms is gathered. All this accumulated data and current clinical trial results indicate that the cellular therapies could be the most effective treatment option for COVID-19 patients to ameliorate the damaged tissues and save lives. In Chapter 2, the authors examine activated mesenchymal stem cells for stroke repair. Stem Cell treatment has shown recovery in animal models of stroke, indicating an improved regenerative and repair potential. Though stem cells are still being used in clinical trials, there is no evidence that they enhance recovery in ischemic stroke patients. Nevertheless, the multipotent mesenchymal stem has widely been explored for stroke recovery. An'Activated MSC' as a therapeutic alternative to tackling ischemic stroke is proposed, thereby the activation of MSCs by cytokines, growth factors, hypoxia, pharmacological drugs, etc., could be a novel approach to improving stroke patients' responses to receiving MSCs. In Chapter 3, the potential benefits of in vitro culture of therapeutic stem cells in the presence of HB along with the ketogenic diet, whereby higher physiological concentrations of ketone bodies can be achieved in vivo, as an adjuvant to stem cell transplantation is assessed"--
