Frequently listed as one of the fireside poets, he was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings, as well as his 1866 book Snow-Bound. Whittier was first introduced to poetry by a teacher. His sister sent his first poem, "The Exile's Departure", to the Newburyport Free Press without his permission, and its editor, William Lloyd Garrison, published it on June 8, 1826. Garrison as well as another local editor encouraged Whittier to attend the recently opened Haverhill Academy.

Book Synopsis Occasional Poems by : Frank H. Thomas
Download or read book Occasional Poems written by Frank H. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2022-10-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occasional Poems is a selection from more than fifty years of Frank Thomas's observations and musings on the world around him. Many of the poems celebrate people and occasions that have been an important part of the poet's life. Yet even these very personal poems are meant to speak to a broader audience-to what is most deeply human in us all. The poems reflect many verse forms, moods, and mental landscapes and, at their best, demonstrate the qualities of music and art that words can evoke. Beautifully framing the poems are drawings by the poet's granddaughter Ryan Thomas-Palmer; they bring a coherence and a light to the poetry that the poems alone would not have.
