(2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Occasional Papers on the Theory of Glaciers: Now First Collected and Chronologically Arranged; With a Prefatory Note on the Recent Progress and Present Aspect of the Theory In 1850 Mr. Faraday delivered a lecture at the Royal Institution on certain properties of water, and more especially of water in the act of freezing. This lecture was never (I believe) published by authority. But an abstract of it appeared in the Athenæum Journal for June 15, 1850, and also in the Literary Gazette. In this brief and imperfect summary of what must evidently have been an interesting and suggestive discourse, it is stated, that if a film of water be enclosed between two plates of ice. even at a thawing temperature, the film of water is frozen, and the plates of ice cohere; and also that damp snow becomes, by the same process, compacted into a snow-ball, which will not occur if the snow is dry and hard frozen. These facts appear to have excited little notice, until attention was called to them by Dr. Tyndall in a lecture, also delivered at the Royal Institution, on the 23d January 1857. He gave to the phenomenon the name of regelation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleoecology of Beringia is the product of a symposium organized by its editors, sponsored by the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, and held at the foundation's conference center in Burg Wartenstein, Austria, 8-17 June 1979. The focus of this volume is on the paradox central to all studies of the unglaciated Arctic during the last Ice Age: that vertebrate fossils indicate that from 45,000 to 11,000 years BP an environment considerably more diverse and productive than the present one existed, whereas the botanical record, where it is not silent, supports a far more conservative appraisal of the region's ability to sustain any but the sparsest forms of plant and animal life. The volume is organized into seven parts. Part 1 focuses on the paleogeography of the Beringia. The studies in Part 2 explore the ancient vegatation. Part 3 deals with the steppe-tundra concept and its application in Beringia. Part 4 examines the paleoclimate while Part 5 is devoted to the biology of surviving relatives of the Pleistocene ungulates. Part 6 takes up the presence of man in ancient Beringia. Part 7 assesses the paleoecology of Beringia during the last 40,000 years

This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term `Little Ice Age' was originally used by glaciologists to describe the most recent major glacial advance of the Holocene. Subsequently, the `Little Ice Age' has come to be associated with a period of advances of European glaciers between about 1450 to 1850, as well as with relatively cooler temperatures. The issue of whether or not this concept remains accurate is a major theme of many of the papers included in this volume. The main geographical focus is on the North Atlantic and European sectors, and includes research from a number of different palaeoclimatic fields. Examples are the use of documentary sources, early instrumental records, grain-harvest data, fossil-insect data, ice-core records, glacial evidence, lichenometry, synoptic climatology, and also the human dimensions of climate change. The papers presented reflect state-of-the-art knowledge, as well as thought-provoking new insights into these subject areas. The book will be of value to all those interested in the above topics and in the overall themes of climate variability and global change.
