Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Rigby's Papers on Florida In bringing this book before the public, it has been my endeavor to give as brief a description of every portion of the State of Florida as would still give the reader a good, fair knowledge of the different Coun ties, Cities, Towns, etc. Having visited the State several years ago to recruit my health, and finding the climate so very delightful, I have since spent the greater part of eight years in traveling through the State, visiting every county, investigating its soil, products, etc., to my own satisfaction; and in a great many instances I have been over the ground several times during this period. A great deal of my travel has been in the saddle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Preliminary Report on the Soils of Florida In January, 1897, a reconnoissance trip was taken over Florida in order to make a preliminary study of some of the important soils and soil conditions of the State. The principal types of soils examined were the first, second, and third quality of high pine land; the pine flats or so-called flat woods; the light hammock, the gray or heavy hammock, the mixed land, the heavy marl hammock; the pineapple land; the Etonia scrub, the Spruce pine scrub; and the Lafayette formation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Winter in Florida: Or, Observation on the Soil, Climate, and Products of Our Semi-Tropical State; With Sketches of the Principal Towns and Cities in Eastern Florida, to Which Is Added a Brief Historical Summary; Together With Hints to the Tourist, Invalid and Sportsman There are no good pastures at present for cattle the wild grasses and shrubs on which this present neat stock subsist would not do for dairy stock and whether or not the soil and climate are favorable to the growth of northern grasses, we cannot say, though we see no reason why clover should not grow luxuriantly. There is one way, at least, as practicable there as anywhere, and that is stall feeding; but that would be an extravagance and a labor unheard of. All the butter used is brought from the North, chiefly from the new-york market. Beef is also imported, but generally from some of the Southern cities with which steam communication is had. Florida beef we met with Occasionally, which was very good, being both sweet and tender; though this does not tally with the experience of others who have traveled the State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documents and Proof of the Climate and Soil of Florida: Particularly East Florida There has been, in the six months of the session, not yet terminated, so little of interest, 'or of congratulation, that I might, with great propriety, have spared you the trouble of the recital of the causes which have prevented the consideration of any other topics, but those general ones of the deep and pervading interest which have agitated the whole country, from the meeting of Congress, to the present time. As, ' however, you had a right to expect that some subjects of importance to you should be acted upon, it is incumbent upon me to show that the failure to despatch them 'did not arise from any want of attention or negligence on my part. This book was released on 2001 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a catalogue of the Edward C. Atwater Collection of rare books dealing with "popular medicine" in early America which is housed at the University of Rochester Medical School library. The books described in the catalogue were written by physicians and other professionals to provide information for the non-medical audience. The books taught human anatomy, hygiene, temperance and diet, how to maintain health, and how to cope with illness especially when no professional help was available. The books promoted a healthy lifestyle for the readers, giving guidance on everything from physical fitness and recreation to the special health needs of women. The collection consists of works dealing with reproduction [from birth control to delivering and caring for a baby], venereal disease, home-nursing, epidemics, and the need for public sex education. These books, covering areas largely ignored by the medical profession, made important contributions to the health of the American public, and the collection is a vital piece of medical history. The collector is Edward C. Atwater, Professor Emeritus of Medicine and the History of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical School. Christopher Hoolihan is History of Medicine Librarian at the University of Rochester Medical School's Edward G. Miner LIbrary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marion County Soils It is a matter of common observation that soils vary tremendously in their productive power, depending upon their physical condition, their chemical com position, and their biological activities. For any comprehensive plan of soil improvement looking toward the permanent maintenance of our agricultural lands, a definite knowledge of the various existing kinds or types of soil is a first essential. It is the purpose of a soil survey to classify the various kinds of soil of a given area in such a manner as to permit definite characterization for description and for mapping. With the information that such a survey affords, every farmer or landowner of the surveyed area has at hand the basis for a rational system of improvement of his land. At the same time the Experiment Station is furnished an inventory of the soils of the state, upon which intelli gently to base plans for those fundamental investigations so necessary for solving the problems of practical soil improvement. This county soil report is one of a series reporting the results of the soil sur vey which, when completed, will cover the state of Illinois. Each county report is intended to be as nearly complete in itself as it is practicable to make it, even at the expense of some repetition. There is presented in the form on an Appendix a general discussion of the important principles of soil fertility, in order to help the farmer and landowner to understand the significance of the data furnished by the soil survey and to make intelligent application of the same in the mainte nance and improvement of the land. In many cases it will be of advantage to study the Appendix in advance of the soil report proper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2003-05-03 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioavailability refers to the extent to which humans and ecological receptors are exposed to contaminants in soil or sediment. The concept of bioavailability has recently piqued the interest of the hazardous waste industry as an important consideration in deciding how much waste to clean up. The rationale is that if contaminants in soil and sediment are not bioavailable, then more contaminant mass can be left in place without creating additional risk. A new NRC report notes that the potential for the consideration of bioavailability to influence decision-making is greatest where certain chemical, environmental, and regulatory factors align. The current use of bioavailability in risk assessment and hazardous waste cleanup regulations is demystified, and acceptable tools and models for bioavailability assessment are discussed and ranked according to seven criteria. Finally, the intimate link between bioavailability and bioremediation is explored. The report concludes with suggestions for moving bioavailability forward in the regulatory arena for both soil and sediment cleanup.
