Book excerpt: The turbulent fluxes of momentum, mass, and energy across the ocean-atmosphere boundary are fundamental to our understanding of a myriad of geophysical processes, such as wind-wave generation, oceanic circulation, and air-sea gas transfer. In order to better understand these fluxes, empirical relationships were developed to quantify the interfacial exchange rates in terms of easily observed parameters (e.g., wind speed). However, mounting evidence suggests that these empirical formulae are only valid over the relatively narrow parametric space, i.e. open ocean conditions in light to moderate winds. Several near-surface processes have been observed to cause significant variance in the air-sea fluxes not predicted by the conventional functions, such as a heterogeneous surfaces, swell waves, and wave breaking. Further study is needed to fully characterize how these types of processes can modulate the interfacial exchange; in order to achieve this, a broad investigation into air-sea coupling was undertaken. The primary focus of this work was to use a combination of field and laboratory observations and numerical modeling, in regimes where conventional theories would be expected to breakdown, namely: the nearshore and in very high winds. These seemingly disparate environments represent the marine atmospheric boundary layer at its physical limit. In the nearshore, the convergence of land, air, and sea in a depth-limited domain marks the transition from a marine to a terrestrial boundary layer. Under extreme winds, the physical nature of the boundary layer remains unknown as an intermediate substrate layer, sea spray, develops between the atmosphere and ocean surface. At these ends of the MABL physical spectrum, direct measurements of the near-surface processes were made and directly related to local sources of variance. Our results suggest that the conventional treatment of air-sea fluxes in terms of empirical relationships developed from a relatively narrow set of environmental conditions do not generalize to the coastal and extreme wind environments. This body of work represents a multi-faceted approach to understanding physical air-sea interactions in varied regimes and using a wide array of investigatory methods.

Book excerpt: Here we show that air-sea coupling significantly impacts the simulation of sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the California Current System (CCS). Previous work has shown important differences between coupled and uncoupled models in simulating coastal SST, but only using empirical coupling or idealized scenarios. We compare the output of the UCLA Mesoscale Coupled Model to the output of a similar but uncoupled model over the CCS. These high resolution, realistic regional models have identical coastlines, bathymetry, and topography. They are forced at the boundaries by reanalysis data over the historical period 1981-1990. This model setup allows us to evaluate how including air-sea coupling impacts the accuracy of our simulation by comparing our model output to buoy observations. Both the spatial patterns and the amount of variability are more realistic in the coupled model, which is likely due to improved simulation of internal variability.

Ocean and atmosphere are now treated as coupled parts of one system; the resulting interest in air-sea interaction problems has led to a rapid growth in the sophistication of instruments and measurement techniques. This book has been designed as a reference text which describes, albng with the instruments themselves, the accumulated practical experi ence of experts engaged in field observations of air-sea interac tions. It is meant to supplement rather than replace manuals on standard routine observations or instnunentation handbooks. At the inception a textbook was planned, which would contain only well tested methods and instruments. It was quickly discovered that for the book to be useful many devices and techniques would have to be included which are still evolving rapidly. The reader is therefore cautioned to take nothing in these pages for granted. Certainly, every contributor is an expert, but while some are back ed up by generations of published work, others are pioneers. The choice of topics, of course, is debatable. The types of observa tions included are not exhaustive and topics such as marine aero sols and radio-tracers are omitted, as was the general subject of remote sensing, which was felt to be too broad and evol ving too rapidly. The guideline adopted in limiting size was maximum use fulness to 'a trained experimentalist new to the field'.

Book excerpt: We use a comprehensive observational ensemble to assess the modern-day IPSL model representation of turbulent air-sea fluxes at large, climatological scales in the intertropical region. We consider the surface fluxes, as well as their associated meteorological state variables. In a first step, we create estimates of the observational uncertainties, and use them to highlight the significant biases in the atmospheric component of IPSL-CM5A, when forced with observational sea surface temperatures. In a second step, we apply the same methodology to the evaluation of several versions of the coupled IPSL model from CM4 to CM5B and assess flux-related differences due to ocean-atmosphere coupling, changes in horizontal resolution, surface albedo adjustment, and historical model development. Finally, we discuss methodological aspects of model evaluation, as well as the possible generalization of the relationship between coupled and uncoupled model biases found for the IPSL-CM5A model.
