Book excerpt: Connecting with students of all levels in the Introductory Programming course, Gary Bronson builds the problem solving skills that students need to be successful in Computer Science. Bronson presents a new and unique method of introducing class and object-oriented design using familiar examples of recipes and product plans, both of which contain lists of procedures and materials. These fundamental ideas and design techniques are clearly applied throughout the text and further highlighted in the "Program Design and Development" sections in later chapters. This very well written text engages a wide variety of students. It includes a wealth of pedagogical learning aids to guide students while enriching the course for more advanced students with special features like the "Closer Look" boxes. Teaching object-oriented programming from the beginning, the book also introduces the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and provides an Internet Development Environment on the accompanying CD-ROM. Overall, this book equips students for success with a solid foundation in problem-solving and object-oriented programming.

Book excerpt: An Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming with Java provides an accessible and thorough introduction to the basics of programming in java. This much-anticipated revision continues its emphasis on object-oriented programming. Objects are used early so students begin thinking in an object-oriented way, then later Wu teaches students to define their own classes. In the third edition, the author has eliminated the author-written classes, so students get accustomed to using the standard java libraries. In the new update, the author has included the Scanner Class for input, a new feature of Java 1.5. Also new is the use of smaller complete code examples to enhance student learning. The larger sample development programs are continued in this edition, giving students an opportunity to walk incrementally walk through program design, learning the fundamentals of software engineering. The number and variety of examples makes this a student-friendly text that teaches by showing. Object diagrams continue to be an important element of Wu's approach. The consistent, visual approach assists students in understanding concepts.

He separates the genuinely useful C++, Java, and UML features from the less effective and potentially harmful ones. Horstmann shows you how to determine the best programming practice for whatever application you're in; provides the kind of eye-opening design tips and style rules that can only come from experience; and demystifies advanced topics like frameworks and object persistence. Dozens of illuminating programming examples are readily accessible through the accompanying Web site. Useful code is available for smart pointers, easy output formatting in C++ and Java, a set of classes that makes STL safe to use, and a nifty utility that automatically extracts header files. This unique book: * Offers over 100 practical design hints for good class design * Covers the essential OO features of Java 1.1-like serialization and reflection * Uses the C++ Standard Template Library (STL) throughout * Covers CRC cards in addition to UML

However, with the advent of object-oriented programming, models could be created for real-life systems. With the concept gaining popularity, its field of research and application has also grown to become one of the major disciplines of software development. With Object-Oriented Programming with C++, the authors offer an in- depth view of this concept with the help of C++, right from its origin to real programming level. With a major thrust on control statements, structures and functions, pointers, polymorphism, inheritance and reusability, file and exception handling, and templates, this book is a resourceful cache of programs-bridging the gap between theory and application. To make the book student- friendly, the authors have supplemented difficult topics with illustrations and programs. Put forth in a lucid language and simple style to benefit all types of learner, Object-Oriented Programming with C++ is packaged with review questions for self-learning.

Book excerpt: Object Oriented Programming in C++Object Oriented Programming is a programming in which we design and develop our application or program based of object. Objects are instances(variables) of class.Object oriented programming does not allow data to flow freely around the system. It binds data more closely to the functions that operate on it, and protects it from accidental modifications from outside functions.Object oriented programming allows separation of a complex programs into objects and then builds data and functions around these objects. The data of an object can be accessed only by the functions associated with that object. However, functions of one object can access the functions of other objects.Features of OOP's ( Object Oriented Programming ) Class: Class is an encapsulation of data and coding. Classes are an expanded version of structures. Structure can contain multiple variables. Classes can contain multiple variables, even more, classes can also contain functions as class member. Variables available in class are called Data Members. Functions available in class are called Member Functions. Object: Class is a user-defined data type and object is a variable of class type. Object is used to access class members. Inheritance: Inheritance means access the properties and features of one class into another class. The class who is going to provide its features to another class will be called base class and the class who is using the properties and features of another class will be called derived class. Polymorphism: Polymorphism means more than one function with same name, with different working. It can be static or dynamic. In static polymorphism memory will be allocated at compile time. In dynamic polymorphism memory will be allocated at runtime. Both function overloading and operator overloading are an examples of static polymorphism. Virtual function is an example of dynamic polymorphism. Data Abstraction: The basic idea of data abstraction is to visible only the necessary information, unnecessary information will be hidden from the outside world. This can be done by making class members as private members of class. Private members can be accessed only within the same class where they are declared. Encapsulation: Encapsulation is a process of wrapping data members and member functions in a single unit called class. Using the method of encapsulation, the programmer cannot directly access the data. Data is only accessible through the object of the class.

Book excerpt: Appropriate for Introductory Computer Science (CS1) courses using C++ and Introductory C++ programming courses found in Computer Science, Engineering, CIS, MIS, and Business Departments. This accessible text emphasizes problem-solving techniques using the C++ language, with coverage that develops strong problem-solving skills using problem abstraction and stepwise refinement through the "Programmer's Algorithm." Staugaard first emphasizes the structured (procedural) paradigm, then gradually advances to the object-oriented paradigm using object-oriented programming "seed topics." This approach prepares students for in-depth coverage of classes and objects presented later in the text, while building essential structured programming concepts.
