Book Synopsis Colonial and Post-Colonial Goan Literature in Portuguese by : Paul Michael Melo e Castro
Download or read book Colonial and Post-Colonial Goan Literature in Portuguese written by Paul Michael Melo e Castro and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays brings together established scholars of Lusophone Goan literature from India, Brazil, Portugal and Great Britain. For the first time in English, this volume traces the key narrative works, authors and themes of this small but significant territory. Goa, a Portuguese colony between 1510 and 1961, was the site of a particular and particularly intense meeting of West and East. The problematic yet productive encounter between Europe and India that has characterised Goa’s history is a major theme in its literature, which affords important insights and material for post-colonial thought. Goan literature in Portuguese is the only significant Indian literature to have been written in a European language other than English and, as such, provides both a challenging point of comparison with anglophone Indian literature and a space to examine post-colonial theory often implicitly embedded in a British Indian colonial experience.
Book Synopsis The Big Sleep and Other Novels by : Raymond Chandler
Download or read book The Big Sleep and Other Novels written by Raymond Chandler and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2000-02-03 with total page 979 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the BBC's '100 Novels That Shaped Our World' 'Raymond Chandler invented a new way of talking about America, and America has never looked the same to us since' Paul Auster, author of The New York Trilogy Raymond Chandler was America's preeminent writer of detective fiction, and this edition of The Big Sleep and Other Novels collects three of the best novels to feature his hard-drinking, philosophising PI, Philip Marlowe. Raymond Chandler created the fast talking, trouble seeking Californian private eye Philip Marlowe for his first great novel The Big Sleep in 1939. Often imitated but never bettered, it is in Marlowe's long shadow that every fictional detective must stand - and under the influence of Raymond Chandler's addictive prose that every crime author must write. Marlowe's entanglement with the Sternwood family - and an attendant cast of colourful underworld figures - is the background to a story reflecting all the tarnished glitter of the great American Dream. The hard-boiled detective's iconic image burns just as brightly in Farewell My Lovely, on the trail of a missing nightclub crooner. And the inimitable Marlowe is able to prove that trouble really is his business in Raymond Chandler's brilliant epitaph, The Long Goodbye. 'One of the greatest crime writers, who set standards that others still try to attain' Sunday Times 'Chandler wrote like a slumming angel and invested the sun-blinded streets of Los Angelos with a romantic presence' Ross Macdonald, author of The Drowning Pool
Book Synopsis O matrimônio do céu e do inferno by : William Blake
Download or read book O matrimônio do céu e do inferno written by William Blake and published by Iluminuras. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Synopsis Poetry from Beyond the Grave by : Francisco Cândido "Chico" Xavier
Download or read book Poetry from Beyond the Grave written by Francisco Cândido "Chico" Xavier and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2013-05-10 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry from Beyond the Grave is the first English publication of a large selection of poems by the Brazilian medium and Spiritist leader Francisco Cândido “Chico” Xavier. These poems, originally collected in the volume Parnaso de Além-Túmulo, were dictated to Xavier by a variety of spirits of Brazilian poets from the afterlife, as journeying souls or as witnesses of the spiritual city Nosso Lar, “our house.” Poetry from Beyond the Grave is a veritable collection of haunted writing, in which poets present their posthumous work as if they were alive. The brilliant translation by Vitor Pequeno is supplemented by an extensive afterword by Jeremy Fernando, who traces what it means to speak through the other.
Book Synopsis Fernando Pessoa : The Bilingual Portuguese Poet by : Anne Terlinden
Download or read book Fernando Pessoa : The Bilingual Portuguese Poet written by Anne Terlinden and published by Publications Fac St Louis. This book was released on 1990 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to shed light on the rather unexplored "English facet" of Fernando Pessoa, considered one of the major Portuguese poets of the twentieth century. The originality of this study also lies in its extensive use of unpublished documents. Out of the bulk of Pessoa's English writings, The Mad Fiddler has been selected; it offers not only poems of better quality than most of his writings in English but it also has the advantage of being a complete and coherent suite of " mystical " poems. A systematic comparative study of the themes in The Mad Fiddler and in the poems by the four Portuguese heteronyms reveals a claer continuity and shows that Pessoa's bilingual Poetry is based on his main ontological quest, which he tried to solve by means of his dramatic scattering into " masks ". After this comparative analysis, the individuality of The Mad Fiddler is defined. Following an overwiew of the unpublished English writings found in the Pessoan legacy, The Mad Fiddler is analysed by means of Pessoa's own unpublished comments. An investigation of Pessoa's private French library and of his un published Literary Appreciations proves how fully he understood the impact of Symbolism on the evolution of Modern Art. The Mad Fiddler could indeed be viewed as an English echo of Pessoa's interest in modern trends in Literature and as a kind of " English microcosm " of Pessoa's aesthetic theory.
