Book Synopsis Police Use of Force in New York City by : Philip K. Eure
Download or read book Police Use of Force in New York City written by Philip K. Eure and published by . This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the death of Eric Garner in Staten Island in 2014 and others across the Nation, there has been a public call for greater accountability when police officers use force that appears neither reasonable nor proportional. This report investigated the New York Police Department's (NYPD's) use of force by reviewing a large sample of force investigations. It examines five aspects of use of force within NYPD: trends; reporting; de-escalation; training; and discipline. The report begins by highlighting data and trends from excessive or unnecessary force cases substantiated by the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB). It then presents the findings of an independent analysis of force cases. Finally, it analyzes and evaluates NYPD's disciplinary system, including a close review of cases where it was determined that the use of force was not reasonable or justified. Figures. This is a print on demand report.

Book Synopsis Street Justice by : Marilynn S. Johnson
Download or read book Street Justice written by Marilynn S. Johnson and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2004-10-31 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Street Justice traces the stunning history of police brutality in New York City, and the antibrutality movements that sought to eradicate it, from just after the Civil War through the present. New York's experience with police brutality dates back to the founding of the force and has shown itself in various forms ever since: From late-nineteenth-century "clubbing"-the routine bludgeoning of citizens by patrolmen with nightsticks-to the emergence of the "third degree," made notorious by gangster movies, from the violent mass-action policing of political dissidents during periods of social unrest, such as the 1930s and 1960s, to the tumultuous days following September 11. Yet throughout this varied history, the victims of police violence have remained remarkably similar: they have been predominantly poor and working class, and more often than not they have been minorities. Johnson compellingly argues that the culture of policing will only be changed when enough sustained political pressure and farsighted thinking about law enforcement is brought to bear on the problem.

If necessary, it begins with an arcing voltage of 50,000 V to penetrate thick clothing; the 50,000 V is never delivered to the body itself. Due to the widespread usage of these devices and the widespread misconceptions surrounding their operation, this book will have significant utility. Book Synopsis Notorious C.O.P. by : Derrick Parker
Download or read book Notorious C.O.P. written by Derrick Parker and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his career, Derrick Parker worked on some of the biggest criminal cases in rap history, from the shooting at Club New York, where Derrick personally escorted Jennifer Lopez to police headquarters, to the first shooting of Tupac Shakur. Always straddling the fence between "po-po" and NYPD outsider, Derrick threatened police tradition to try to get the cases solved. He was the first detective to interview an informant offering a detailed account of Biggie Smalls's murder. He protected one of the only surviving eyewitnesses to the Jam Master Jay murder and knows the identity of the killers as well as the motivation behind the shooting. Notorious C.O.P. reveals hip-hop crimes that never made the paper—like the robbing of Foxy Brown and the first Hot 97 shooting—and answers some lingering questions about murders that have remained unsolved. The book that both the NYPD and the hip-hop community don't want you to read, Notorious C.O.P. is the first insider look at the real links between crime and hip-hop and the inefficiencies that have left some of the most widely publicized murders in entertainment history unsolved.
