Therefore, many studies concluded that this practice was not grounded in research that supported its therapeutic efficacy. This book was written based on two conducted studies to provide an evidence-based practice related to nurses’ perceptions and decisionsversus patients’ opinions and preferences concerning the use of these coercive measures. Accordingly, pieces of evidence from those studies concluded and supported a sustained commitment to the reduction and hopefully the ultimate elimination of seclusion and restraint, especially during the management of behavioral emergencies.

Through the Mental Health Act 2007, the Government has updated the 1983 Act to ensure it keeps pace with the changes in the way that mental health services are - and need to be - delivered. This publication provides guidance and advice to registered medical practitioners, approved clinicians, managers and staff of hospitals, and approved mental health professionals on how they should proceed when undertaking duties under the Act.
