Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this quantitative study is to determine nurses' perceptions of electronic documentation. Healthcare organizations have recognized the advantages of electronic documentation, such as legibility, organized data, and the simultaneous use of the record by multiple caregivers and the elimination of paper records. In keeping with a common response to change, nurses can be very resistant to relinquishing the traditional paper records. By collecting the nurses' perceptions of electronic documentation, information will be generated on a pivotal point in the success or failure of implementing and using electronic documentation. The framework from Davis's 1986 Technology Acceptance Model uses perceived usefulness of the system and ease of use as ways of determining if nurses will use a system or not. The study population was 230 licensed vocational nurses and registered nurses who used electronic documentation and delivered direct patient care in the Women's Services department of a local hospital. The tool used to measure the nurses' perceptions was the Nurses Attitudes towards Computerization Questionnaire by Stronge and Brodt. The results of the study indicate that 52% of nurses feel that the Women's Services department of a local hospital. The tool used to measure the nurses' perceptions was the Nurses Attitudes towards Computerization Questionnaire by Stronge and Brodt. The results of the study indicate that 52% of nurses feel that computers made their job easier and that they had more time for professional tasks. The results also indicated that 64% of the nurses believed that computers offered a remarkable opportunity to improve patient care and that computers decrease repeated documentation. The majority of nurses (56%) disagreed with the idea that computers increase healthcare costs and that their use increased nurses' workloads.

The Fifth International Symposium on Nursing Informatics clearly showed that the nursing profession is well aware of the potential that computer technology holds for improving the quality and efficiency of health care if information systems are well designed, integrated and professionally managed. The structure of the Symposium and the organization of the papers in this volume represent the work of the Scientific Programme Committee and the editors. In addition to the scientific papers, the editors have also included authors' descriptions of panels, posters and scientific demonstrations, giving readers an excellent overview of the current state-of-the-art of nursing informatics. In order to encourage young colleagues to publish, graduate students in nursing informatics submitted poster abstracts that are also included in the volume.

THE NURSING PROCESS; A GLOBAL CONCEPT critically explores a concept that was introduced into nursing in the 1970s and rapidly spread all over the world. It begins with the background and history of the Nursing Process, and analyses its use in various fields, such as managerial technologies and psychiatric nursing. It then goes on to look at its use in six different countries from a variety of world regions - in Europe, Finland, Germany and the Czech Republic, as well as South Africa, Australia and the Caribbean. It explores its strengths and weaknesses, and tries to make some predictions about future use. The book combines descriptions of the state-of-the-art based on extensive literature surveys, as well as analytical approaches. It creates opportunities for comparison, especially with regard to problem-solving strategies. Combines diverse perspectives of the core concept and its useProvides international overviews as well as detailed country reportsBased on extensive literature surveys as well as analytical approachesCreates opportunities for comparison especially with regard to problem-solving strategies

Book excerpt: Intended for nurses who would like to know more about the development of the computerized information systems on which they have become so dependent, Nursing and Computers: An Anthology is a wide-range introduction to the literature of this field. The editors have selected historical and contemporary papers to show both the systems at their inception and examples of how they have evolved. Of interest to both the generalist and the specialist, these articles examine the partnership between nurses and computers in the areas of administration, practice, research, and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine nurses' perceptions of electronic documentation (ECD). The need for healthcare data is increasing both from within and outside healthcare organizations. It is becoming more difficult to meet demands with paper records. Electronic documentation improves healthcare quality, safety, and efficiency. Electronic records are legible, organized, complete, and accessible by multiple users. Nurses can be resistant to using computers. Therefore, it is important to assess nurses' perceptions of ECD. The Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1986) is the organizing framework which suggests that perceived usefulness and ease of use determine an individual's intention to use the system. The study population was 190 registered nurses (RNs) who use ECD and provide direct patient care in inpatient settings within two Midwest hospitals. Nurses Attitudes Towards Computerization Questionnaire (Stronge & Brodt, 1985) was used to measure nurses attitudes toward computerization. The results of the study show how ECD impacts RNS in terms of time saving, reduced paperwork, job satisfaction, patient care, and benefits to the organization. More than 50% believe ECD allows RNs more time for professional tasks and improves communication between departments. However, more than 56% believe they spend more time on computers than they spend with patients. About 52% think ECD is redundant and does not save repeated documentation. It was not conclusive if ECD reduces or increases health care costs.
