Examples are presented to show the effects of reservoir heterogeneities on the compaction of these hot water systems, as well as the effects of different production-injection schemes. The use of isothermal models to simulate the deformation of non-isothermal systems was also investigated.

The model used is based on an idealized, two-dimensional case, where the porous medium is isotropic, nonhomogeneous, filled with saturated liquid. The fluids are assumed to have constant and temperature dependent viscosity. A Boussinesq approximation and Darcy's law are used. The model will utilize a simple hypothetical geothermal system, i.e. graben within horsts structure, with three layers of different permeabilities. Vorticity plays an importance roles in the natural convection process, and its generation and development do not depend only on the buoyancy, but also on the magnitude and direction relation between the flow velocity and the local gradient of permeability to viscosity ratio. This model is currently used together with a physical, scaled-down reservoir model to help conceptual modeling.

The transport of heat and fluid through a porous reservoir is computed using a numerical model. The one-dimensional consolidation theory of Terzaghi has been coupled to the heat and fluid flow to calculate reservoir compaction. No attempt is made of model chemical reactions or precipitation that might occur when waters of a different temperature and salinity are injected into the reservoir.

Book excerpt: Reinjection experiments in the strongly fluid-depleted reservoir of Larderello have revealed the possibility of increasing production rates and overall heat extraction by injection into high permeability, low pressure zones of the reservoir (Giovannoni et al., 1981; Cappetti et al., 1983; Bertrami et al., 1985). A large fraction (over 80%) of the injected water was recovered as steam in the most favorable area and, despite the short distance between injection and producing wells (the minimum distance being about 150 m), no significant temperature change has been observed in the latter, after 3 years of injection at a rate ranging from 10 to 50 kg/s (Bertrami et al., 1985). The physical processes involved in cold water injection into a ''superheated'' fractured reservoir are not yet fully understood, and this insufficient knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms limits the possibility of forecasting future reservoir behavior and optimizing the heat extraction process. Numerical simulation can be a very effective tool in the study of the complex phenomena involved, allowing a rapid examination of different situations and conditions, a systematic investigation of the effects of various parameters on reservoir performance, and some insight into long term behavior. We have performed simulation experiments on simple one-dimensional, porous and fractured reservoir models in order to study the migration of injected water, thermodynamic conditions in the boiling zone, heat extraction, and vapor generation. A two-dimensional radial porous medium model, with some characteristics typical of the high productivity zones of Larderello, has, also been applied for studying the- evolution. of the shape and the thermodynamic conditions of the injection plume in the presence of gravity, reservoir heterogeneities and anisotropy.

Book excerpt: We have presented a preliminary analysis of permeability structure and fluid and heat flow conditions in the deeper horizons of the Larderello geothermal system. Our main observations and findings are: (1) Measurements in deep Larderello wells have indicated formation temperatures near 300 o C at 3000 m depth, and even higher temperatures at greater depth. (2) From an analysis of heat transfer mechanisms we suggest that a transition from vapor-dominated to liquid-dominated conditions must have been present in the natural state of the Larderello geothermal system. No reliable determination of the depth at which this transition occurred has yet been made, but a depth of approximately 2000 m or more appears most likely. (3) From temperature-depth data in two-phase reservoirs it is in principle possible to estimate vertical permeability. (4) For exploited reservoirs such as Larderello, reconstruction of permeability and temperature trends with depth can be made indirectly, using numerical simulation. Our preliminary results indicate that production of high-enthalpy fluids can be explained from two-phase flow effects in a fractured-porous medium. 18 refs., 2 tabs., 7 figs.
